    You are right not to trust that turbo because most runaways are caused by the oil seal in the turbo blowing and the following induction of uncontrolled oil flow thru the turbo into the engine thus a runaway engine until you either shut that air flow completely off or it empties the oil pan and most of the time its the latter ending up with the engine in pieces

    • @NOT_FOR_HIRE
      @NOT_FOR_HIRE  3 роки тому +41

      Thank you for having common sense. So many people are telling me cummins don't run away. I know it rare but it could still happen.

    • @douglasmorrison9098
      @douglasmorrison9098 3 роки тому +25

      @@NOT_FOR_HIRE It sure can and the main reason for it to happen is the seals in that turbo go to pouring the oil that lubricates the bearings into the fan area and a cummins will run away with that oil but a lot of people dont believe it but I have in my 50 plus years as a Mechanic Seen it happen and like you always pulled that air intake hose off the turbo and kept a board big enough to slap over that air intake so I could choke it down if that happened. Detroit would runaway because of the blower system they had on theirs but they got real smart and put a door with a trip cable on it on the air intake side of that blower to shut that engine down but cummins never saw fit to design that in that fashion so it left it up to us mechanics to figure it out

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 3 роки тому +13

      You can just use a carbon monoxide fire extinguisher and spray it into the intake manifold until it completely shuts down.Alot better than using a rag or towel and trying to put your fingers in the turbocharger.Speaking about Cummins,that's what you had to do with their small cam engines because all of them were naturally aspirated but the big cam engines were all turbocharged with the Holset 60.

    • @douglasmorrison9098
      @douglasmorrison9098 3 роки тому +12

      @@Slim_Slid Best way is what he has there which is a block of wood or plastic anything solid which will fit over that turbo intake hole completely and shut the air off safely. common sense tells you not to use a rag or towel or stick your fingers in that turbo unless you want to lose them

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 3 роки тому +12

      @@douglasmorrison9098 The reason why I said that is because I saw a video of a guy that had a runaway with a Detroit 4-53T and he used a rag and stuck his hand into turbocharger.It fortunately shut down,but I was expecting blood to spew from it once he tried doing that...

    Ohhhhh she's a beauty. I love trucks. Especially older ones like this. I drove trucks for a number of years. Loved the work . My first truck I ran for my boss was a 1980 Freightliner. And man I loved that truck. An absolute beast of a truck. Sounded like storm in hell when it started up. Used to send noobs running for cover. It was hilarious.
    The truck was black gold and red. The company colours. Mostly hauled reachorses to and from the racetrack. And or studs and stables. She was such a smooth ride no serious rattles and it didn't upset the horses. And I got the job driving them as owners and trainers wanted someone who had experience with horses I grew up with horses. And rode part time as a jockey . Yes female truck driver of barely 5' tall and a lightweight 6 stone. .
    Used to get some crazy funny looks I tell you . People used to look at me look at the truck look at me again and be like nah she can't be driving that. When they realised I was. It was so damn funny.
    I'd just say hey guys how you going. And they'd be sitting there with dumb looks on their faces like a cat stole their tongue.
    Wish I could still drive but my hips and back won't let me anymore.
    And I'm third gen. Driver.
    Keep up your awesome work.
    Chriss from London UK and St Lo France.

      Cummins are pretty bombproof engines, you really have to mistreat them to get them to fail. Best part is no damned engine management systems to break on older wagons, so easy to fault find, if you got fuel at the injector feed pipes and the engine spins it should go.

    I've seen some fairly serious runaways over the years including guys that didn't think to shut the airflow off and ran around trying to figure something out only to have the engine eat itself alive. Way to keep a level head on your shoulders and work through the processes. I taught myself how to be a mechanic by taking things apart and putting them back together. The rest I learned from experience. I've worked on thousands of cars and trucks since then and I still learn new things everyday.

Soak the stud with Kroil or your favorite penetrant and keep working the nut/stud back and forth wider and wider. It has been a reliable method for this old man. Best wishes on your labor of love.

    I have to admit I have never seen your channel before, I watch twin sticks, and JC, and others, I was scrolling and seen Big Cam Cummins and as a OTR driver it grabbed me, the very first truck I ever climbed up in was a 1975 Pete cabover and I was hooked, after watching this video and knowing personally how committed you have to be to restore a old cab over and the seemingly endless hours of hard dirty greasy work, not to mention the $$$$ you gained a subscriber and now I’m going to spend my morning catching up and watching your videos, Thank you for letting us tag along behind you in your adventure, that engine sounded like she was ready to pull, and I know that you were happy when it ran too, Congratulations!!

    Man, owning one of these cabovers is my dream. My dad was a trucker, and I find myself wishing I had become a owner operator like him so I could own a truck like this. I decided on a different career path, but I enjoy watching videos like this.

    OMG. I saw one of these on I95 in NY 2 days ago. Like this exact color, too. Flatbed hauling what looked like building materials. It really stuck out on the road.
    Edit: Ayyyy! You got it running! Congrats!

    Wonderful. I love the way you brought that iron man to life with pure Cummings sound! I work on those engines with or without a helper and I make sure I have all I need without driving back to the city .

    Great stuff man. Been an independent since the 90’s and always loved the cabovers. You have great patience for a young man. Keep it up and stay safe! ✌️

    This channel/video/creator is what cool UA-cam is all about. I used run twin 3406 marine diesel CATS, Cummins, and LUGGERS. This video, although different, brought back memories of hearing those engines start up and purr. Cabovers are sooo cool. Loved them as a kid. Happy for you, dude. Enjoyed the video thoroughly! Subbed!

      He would have already destroyed it with the forklift by now. I'm still sore about the GMC cabover he ruined a year or two ago.
