Suri alpaca is a fabulous fiber and can sometimes get a bad reputation from people who have a negative first impression. I'm going to share some tips and tricks for making Suri alpaca a fabulous fiber arts experience!

That cheese cloth hack is AWSOME.
RIGHT?
Cheesecloth tip is brilliant. Thank you
PG thanks! I can’t take credit for the original idea, but I’ll help spread it to whomever is interested!
Thank you! Your video gave me confidence to attempt spinning the suri fleece I was given some time ago.
I'm so glad! How did it go?
Thanks for all the great advice!
Great video, thanks!
Thank you so much! I just bought my first Suri blanket and needed advice on prepping. I tried combing with my fine combs and wasn't thrilled. Ran it through the drum carder and definitely experienced the struggle of getting it off on the first pass. I am heading to the kitchen to get cheesecloth!! Planning on carding it into a colorful corriedale batt for shine. Happy to have found your channel. ~ Karen
Thank you!
Can you demo the cheese cloth tip? I'm new at all of this so that would be helpful as we have 2 alpacas.
Hi, I just watched your video on Suri Alpaca, and you mentioned blending it with other fibers. However, you didn’t mention which fibers; so that’s my question what are good fibers to blend with Suri Alpaca thank you so much.
Thanks for this very informative video. My neighbour has offered me some Suri alpaca fleece (they have 5!) and I’m fairly new to spinning and raw fleece... I’m wondering what to do with it! Maybe I shouldn’t be too enthusiastic and get too much! I’ve never done lock spinning but it looks cool - would need to get the Ashford jumbo flier conversion kit! Also perhaps I should invest in some extra fine combs - I only have some mediums my husband made for me. Lots to think about. Thank you 🙏
1:10 NB: Human hair is not hollow - it has a medulla at the centre, which is sometimes fragmented, or even absent, but it's such a small percentage that you still wouldn't call it hollow, like a polar bear hair, which is hollow for half the radius of the shaft.
Great-thank you!
What do you do with 12" long suri fibers as a spinner?
There's quite a few options! You can spin the locks into a core yarn, you can use them for doll hair/felting, and you can even spin them into their own yarn if you want!
What other breed of sheep wool would you blend it with please?
Carol Harper Hi! There are a few options that work really well! Finer wools like Merino, Polwarth, Cormo, are good, Corriedale is another. But really, it’s fun to experiment and see what blends you like, there isn’t really a wrong answer when it comes to blending fiber. I wouldn’t blend a really coarse wool with it, but other than that, have fun!
Suri is a fiber that doesn’t have a lot of memory when worked up into a finished product (for example it will have a beautiful drape but it may sag over time.) Because of this, it is helpful to match it with a fiber that has a lot of crimp and memory like a finer wool, that way it stabilizes the Suri.
Silk is another good blend with Suri as well. I hope that helps!
Feathertail Fiber Arts Thank you for replying so quickly. I’ve got to learn how to woollen spin, have you or are you going to do a video on this? I’m a novice and found your videos great, not too long but very informative. 😊 Thank you💐🇬🇧💐
Carol Harper No problem! I have a great chart I can send you if you have an email address. Otherwise you can personal message me at Feathertail Fiber Arts on Facebook I can send it to you there as well.
Feathertail Fiber Arts thank you again, I’ll send it to you.
Feathertail Fiber Arts I’ve sent you my email address via Facebook messages. Thank you
