Mascagni believed this to be his masterpiece and I agree. Played to an empty stage after the drama has unfolded in a way only Italian opera can portray. Wonderful.
I heard that he wrote it for a contest. And initially he threw the papers with notes in the garbage because he believed it is no good. But his wife picked it up and encouraged him to continue
Mascagni wrote many other pieces of music, but while other famous composers were noted for writing several well known pieces each, this intermezzo became Mascagni's only 'known' work. I'd like this played at the end of the first half of Bagi, The Return of the Monster with Ryo crying over everything which he thinks is his fault. How he fears that even after giving Bagi the shot to cure her feral state, he thinks he still killed her. He doesn't notice that the vaccine worked and saved Bagi. And with Skunk (Astro Boy) about to drop an unpinned grenade, Ryo wants to take responsibility for everything and wants to bid a tear-stained farewell to Bagi The sad last words of the first half: Ryo:"It no longer matters... In the same way that an artwork is always, in some way, a reflection of the artist, so too our individual reactions to it are also a reflection of ourselves. Everyone deserves that experience.
@@charlesmcg Sure theres plenty of music I like across classical, rock and electronic genres. You gave your definition of art, but that's not the only one. Another take on it, would be a piece of work that provokes reactions or emotions. It provoked a reaction in me that it was pretentious shite. I don't like the way the music continually sweeps up in pitch in a cheap attempt to stir emotion like a sound track to an old film. Rather than gushing about the music, I have analysed it and made a relevant comment. So it has provoked a reaction in me, albeit not a positive one. If everyone had the same reaction, what a boring world it would be! Delighted to chat with you on You Tube comments.
My mom always wanted us to be cultured and know music, plays, opera, paintings, sculptures etc. I had forgotten all about this work until I was rewatching the anime series Rurouni Kenshin and got to episode 31. They were using this song in the most touching scene and I started to cry. This music welled my soul as a child and to hear it and recognize it and to remember those youthful feelings… well it was indescribable. I’m so glad someone posted this to UA-cam. And I’m so thankful that my mother understood the importance of keeping these masterpieces alive within our hearts.
Maybe it's just from seeing it in the Godfather, but this piece always evokes a feeling of seeing something from a fuller perspective. Something that wasn't always clear while it was going on, that was full of heartbreak, mistakes, and also its pleasures. What wasn't so obvious until now was its incredible beauty, and the piece evokes regret or joy to the extent that we were able to appreciate that while it was going on.

Same!! It’s such a beautiful piece. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. ❤
Wow, tingling, goosebumps and tears. The back drop fits it perfectly.
My father used to whistle this when I was about 8 years old.
Guaranteed to be at my funeral, I am only 78 😁😁 ,a few years to go yet.

I was born while this song was playing and have to hold back tears every time I hear it. Reading how many people were send off to it truly makes me realise that this is the sound of life.

¡ Cuanta belleza!
And to think that Mascagni only wrote the intermezzo as an afterthought to join the two acts of his new and unperformed opera and enter it into a competition for one-act operas - which he won !! It is truly one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Amen to that.

But I hope he is ok this time, or is he sick? You dont must answer me, if you not speak about this.
35 years years ago I was playing this at full volume. My mother came upstairs and sat down & loved it. She said “please play this at my funeral.. . It makes more sense now... I will
Questo pezzo è di un'intensità incredibile. Tanta bellezza concentrata in relativamente pochi minuti di musica.
We played this over my father's photo slideshow at his funeral almost three weeks ago, always loved this piece but now even more, chi vediamo dopo Papa ❤️🇮🇹

I first heard this in the movie, “Raging Bull.” It was used during a slow motion fighting scene. Quite a beautiful, peaceful piece to be used for such a brutal sport. I had to go to the credits to find the name of the music. Since then, this has become one of my favorites. So moving.
The piece was also used in one of the last scenes of the Godfather saga.
I wish this played in Fist of the North Star.

I am not normally a fan of opera, but hearing this for the first time I bawled. And I still tear up, this is such a masterful and heartfelt song.

This is what Italian soul sounds when it sings! No matter how many years go by, this musical piece will always bring tears to whoever listens to it. This is the sound of Eternity!

@@bordercolliesarebeautiful5280 I don't like it. Its pretentious/aimless/rambling shite.
@@PreservationEnthusiast you're fucking shite
@@PreservationEnthusiast The fantastic thing about art is its power to connect our experiences with the rest of the world. In the same way that an artwork is always, in some way, a reflection of the artist, so too our individual reactions to it are also a reflection of ourselves. Even if this piece doesn't resonate with you in the way it does for some, and I could never really know what it would mean for you, I hope you find or have found art which moves you in the way this music moves me.
Onore all'Italia, ancora troppo "calpesta e derisa"
My mom always wanted us to be cultured and know music, plays, opera, paintings, sculptures etc. I had forgotten all about this work until I was rewatching the anime series Rurouni Kenshin and got to episode 31. They were using this song in the most touching scene and I started to cry. This music welled my soul as a child and to hear it and recognize it and to remember those youthful feelings… well it was indescribable. I’m so glad someone posted this to UA-cam. And I’m so thankful that my mother understood the importance of keeping these masterpieces alive within our hearts.

It's definitely right up there with Firestarter by The Prodigy.
This is truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. I admittedly have a heart of stone but this just moves me to tears.
