    Perhaps the biggest difference for me is that watches are beautiful whereas smart watches are ugly and clumsy- looking. If you wear a watch you're wearing a piece of sculpture. If you wear a smart watch you have an appliance on your wrist.

    Never even looked at smart watches, around 2 or 3 years ago it seems like everyone just started wearing the same rectangle. I hardly use my phone at all so I certainly don't want another one on my wrist. Perpetually fascinated by the mechanics of traditional watches, I continue to wear them.

    Great to see a new voice in the space making great points. Just one word of warning. The watch hobby is a relentless mistress. There's always another watch. So get a watch or two. A dress watch and a daily wear or two. Then forget that the watch hobby exists, and enjoy your fancy new wrist wear!

    That’s why I’m double wristing a traditional watch and a Fitbit. It’s the best of both worlds, fitness & sleep tracking and only need to charge it once a week since I have notifications and screen always off. But I’m still contemplating whether I should replace it with an Oura ring.

    I have a fitbit that i will wear for the whole day once a week or 2, just for fitness monitoring purposes (to keep an eye on the heart rate, how many steps i do (to make sure I do a certain amount) and to see how many calories burnt etc) I don't even see it as a watch as such, just a health tool. I couldn't use it as my only watch.

    I literally did this very thing. I have stopped wearing my Apple watch and purchased a Seiko Prospex Land SPB121 and a Tudor Pelagos 39. It's kind of liberating not being chained to the Apple Watch. It took me a couple of weeks to stop looking at my wrist when I wanted to know the temperature outside or when I get a call. But, I'm glad I've stopped. Now I have to figure out a way to get back to a dumb phone and I'll be good.

    Well....smartwatches (I own a Fitbit Sense) have thousands of free digital dials you can download. While this watch itself can only store 5 dials, I've picked through lots of dials and have picked my favorite 5. I often change the dial at least once or twice a day depending on my activity. I can "change my watch" without removing the strap from my wrist. I still feel fascinated by all manner and sort of watches...analog and digital, quartz and winding and automatic, but the low cost and high features of the smartwatch keep the Fitbit Sense on my left wrist as my daily driver. I pull out my trusty Casio F-91W when I swim, and my Casio Illuminator is still a good backup from time to time. The charging thing doesn't bother me...I plug my cell phone and smart watch into their respective chargers at the same time each night, and unplug them at the same time each morning. I turned the notifications off...I agree that is an annoying feature of smartwatches.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's definitely not an all or nothing rule. I have used a Fitbit and I loved the thing. I used it as a stepcounter and for looking up time. It lasted for days before I needed a charge. I switched to a an Apple Watch because I wanted Apple Pay and it synced well with my fitness app and tracking. I hate to charge everyday but it’s an inconvenience I’m willing to endure. I have some quartz watches too but I never use them again. I could if I wanted to change up my style. But mostly I’m happy with the Apple Watch.

    And in case it happens, I’ll sell the dang thing and buy… three Casios , or a citizen eco drive.
    You’re right on the money about heritage : even a Casio passed on will serve as a heritage piece.

  • @oscarlopez-gc1pv

    My two cents. I have never owned a smart watch because I believe my smartphone does everything the smartwatch does and much more. I will probably buy one just to check it out but you are right it’s a very plain boring electronic square strapped to the wrist. An automatic watch passed down as an heirloom is nice to know that the watch was powered by the body movement of the family member that passed it down as an heirloom and also every scratch and ding left behind is like a finger print left behind by the family member. And if it’s a very old, rare, highly collectible watch with all original parts from a prestigious brand like Patek Philippe or Rolex it could be worth a small fortune. Looking forward to seeing more videos from your channel. You talk a lot none stop with no pauses or a interruptions I LIKE IT! You have good communication speech energetic I find it charming. Keep up the content as we all learn together about watches. ETHOS a word I wasn’t quite sure what it meant so I looked it up. I like that word. It’s a word that should be used in some kind of branding. I hope I find a way to use it , in branding before you beat me to the punch.🥊 thanks for the video you were very charming and entertaining. Cheers!

    • @TimeTickerOfficial
      @TimeTickerOfficial  6 місяців тому

      Exactly! A smartwatch doesn't last all that long, it would never be considered an heirloom, etc. Also, I think I used the word "ethos" too many times back to back if I'm being honest 😂. Thanks for sharing Oscar.

Oddly enough I want a classic Seiko Monster, but this is me getting sucked in the watch autism again. I did a test run with a smart bracelet that does all the fancy tracking stuff but I got stressed out by the notifications and I almost always forgot to charge it since I am bad at supporting my smart devices alive. I enjoy my Apple watch, not as much as my autos, metal tuning fork, and quartz watches (I don’t own any wind only), but it has its place in my life…on my right wrist. I wear my “real” watches on my left wrist. Yes, double wristing is how I roll. I don’t think there’s any need to hate smart watches or eye-roll judge those that wear them. Plenty of room for everyone. And I’d argue that smart watches, especially the Apple watch, have probably led many to consider and purchase other “real” watches.

    Very good topic. There is a play in words between warches and "smart" watches. Smart watches are just monitors. Just because it also tells time it does not make them a watch. Like a computer, after several years rhey have ro be replaced. Just because a computer tells time it does not make it a clock. This is not the case with a watch. Additional, a watch is also considered art and a piece of jewelry. This cannot be said for a "smart" warch. Lastly, yoy can trade or sell a watch because a "smart" watch is totally worthless due to the technology being out dated. Well done and keep up the topics.

    Of course $30 Casio AE-1200 "Casio Royale" World Timer is MUCH better travel watch than $30000 Patek Philippe World Timer (which obsolete design originates all the way to year 1939) ..but that is called technological progress. AE-1200 has T-1 to T-4 preset time zone function which allows to set waypoint time zones for 4 airports (in those different time zones) and 3 flights can be done with such ease that regular GMT watches begin to appear obsolete. I know it from my own experience. Casio AE-1200 'Royale' is my ideal travel watch to take with for trips which include three flights in one day...

    There is nothing wrong with digital watches when people say they are soulless, of course its just a man made object 😂 same goes to mechanical watches the only reason why we watch enthusiast think it has a soul as we have been brain washed by rich heavy marketing from the likes of Rolex PP and most Swiss brands due to the Japanese quartz crisis 😂
    It is a brilliant excuse/marketing strategy for making people buy mechanical watches.
    In the end, watches are a luxury dont matter if it is a mechanical or digital or even hybrid it is not a necessity, just to tell the time you can just look at your phone 😂 but as a watch enthusiast we buy it coz we love how it makes us feel like a drug 😂❤

It's nice to track everything, but I got to the point where I was kind of obsessed with my stats. My smartwatch told me that I didn't sleep enough? Well, I felt tired all day long. I mean, tracking your activity can be beneficial, especially for someone who just decided to start a fitness journey, but when you get to the point where you already know what to do, it's not so useful anymore. Switching to mechanical and quartz watches instead, I re-discovered the enjoyment of looking the small details, of setting the right time, of changing a battery or listening to a small rotor winding the coil. A real watch is an item of jewellery for men or women. A smart watch is little more than a device to make you look at your phone more often.

    The Apple thing is not a watch. It is a computer with a number of functions, one of which it to tell the time. I wear a real watch. If I wanted the Apple device for its computer capabilities, I would keep it in my pocket or on the dashboard.

    My belief is that smart watches and/or quartz watches have no “horological soul” whatsoever. While I see value and utility in having a quartz watch, but owning such a watch leaves me feeling hollow and wanting to wear a quality automatic timepiece. Just my humble opinion. Hey will you please digress a bit in your UA-cam existence by giving us your background, education, and likes/dislikes in watches, thus giving all of us more context to draw upon when watching your content. Thanks for commenting! I agree that smartwatches have no real pizazz to them 😂. However, personally, I think that certain quartz watches have some serious personality (e.g. the Bulova Lunar Pilot, Casio's retro time pieces, etc.). I will definitely include a segment about my background in the next video! Thanks for the suggestion!

    All the people I know who wear smart watches have no interest in or knowledge of real watches. Smart watches and real watches are too different things. Smart watches should really be re-named 'wrist computers' because that's what they are. I wouldn't bother trying to convert people. People who appreciate watches will always buy them. Personally I think smart watch buyers are like sheep. They need, want and buy what the marketing men tell them they need and want. Us watch buyers are a more individual type of people.

    Lol, it is clear that you are quite passionate about this, but the moment you admitted to using a replica watch discredited a lot of what you had to say. I get that you are probably in high school and do not have much discretionary income, but a lot of your points come across as childish. Automatic watches have horrible accuracy. For someone who wants the most precise time telling possible, an Apple Watch is technically the best option. I personally use a Grand Seiko SBGX353G with the 9F movement because of its accuracy, among other reasons,

    • @TimeTickerOfficial
      @TimeTickerOfficial  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for commenting. I don't recall mentioning that I use a replica watch; I don't own any. I think if you are going for pure accuracy of course an automatic isn't going to fit the bill, but that's not who they are targeted at in this day and age. Additionally, you can entirely avoid smartwatches if you want an accurate timekeeping device (e.g. an atomic watch). Naturally, there are valid reasons to purchase a smartwatch, but for most people, I believe that buying a traditional watch (mechanical, automatic, quartz, digital, a.k.a not smartwatches) is a better option. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

      @@TimeTickerOfficial secondly, true atomic watches are extremely bulky and heavy. What you are probably thinking of are radio controlled watches which require a relatively unobstructed and close in proximity path to an atomic clock radio station, such as the one in Fort Collins. These also only sync once a day, at night, when there is less interference. The accuracy of apple watch is several magnitudes greater than this. Not only does the apple watch sync far more frequently through the internet, it has a temperature compensated mems resonator for its internal clock, achieving asynchronous accuracy greater than +/- 10 seconds per year. Even from just a timekeeping perspective, the apple watch is a marvel of engineering, yet it can do so much more.

      @@Sharur1 You need to wind your ego in pal. People like you in the hobby make it a miserable experience for others. She's entitled to buy and wear what she chooses. Just because she doesn't have a Grand Seiko it doesn't mean she isn't a passionate watch collector. There are no laws or rules in this hobby. Personally I think someone who can only afford a Timex or a Chinese homage watch who is really into that watch is a more valid collector than some billionaire business tycoon who just buys Pateks to boost his ego and then store them all in a vault. By the way, if it's accuracy you're after you could have saved yourself 3 grand and bought yourself a Casio F91w.
