I am so happy that you had your wife try out those knives. I’m just starting out (at a young 72 years old) and the knives I bought are very bulky in my hand and I find that my hand can’t grip them properly. This was a very helpful video. Thank goodness I only bought two knives. I’ll either have to sand down the handles or just put them to the side and get what your wife suggested. Thanks again.😁
I’m AFAB so I have kinda small hands so I do tend to reach for my knives that have slimmer handles. Contoured or atleast slimmed down butt end of the handles tend to feel way better in the hand. So I definitely agree that the reason your wife liked the second flex cut handle and opposed to the first thick one is because of hand size. I also I don’t know why but I like short blades for some reason. Like the blade length of the short Mora sloyd is the longest I will use. And even then I rarely reach for my ones that are around that length.
I have a local hardware store sell the mora ones for 13 Eur, so that's a no brainer as I am wanting to get into this hobby. Initially I wanted to do woodworking in general, but due to being limited to my own room [which is my bedroom aswell, living at my parent's place], and especially looking at health concerns regarding fine wood dust, I will try to find satisfaction here.
I think under normal circumstances the plastic mora sheath seems bare minimum. But when you compare it to some of the factory leather sheaths with no liners, the razor sharp knives tend to cut through the thinner leather too easy. If you know what you were doing, you can be careful and not have that happen. But beginners might not pay attention and stab it through the leather. Where they will not cut through the plastic Mora sheath. It could be a safety issue if your hand is around the sheath, while you are sheathing the knife. So I would say be careful while sheathing, because the knives are razor sharp
I think your wife is onto the right path. They call knives cutlery for a reason. And the nicer they are, the better you feel while using them. Not putting down the Moras, because they are an excellent knife for the price. But as you spend more, you expect more. And Helvie seems to do the extra, but at a higher cost.👍 Fun video!
I myself would pick the Ramelson knife over the beavercraft knife. Both good quality knives for a great price, but the Ramelson just feels better in the hands to me.
SHUT UP!!! As a newb that stuck a blade into his thumb on a push cut (well, tried and succeeded just to bleeding) before getting that "oogey" feeling. I can wholeheartedly relate! Honest opinion too, that's what reviews are for. "I'd like using this one, it's pretty..." etc. Cheers...🍷
Thanks. I have Mora and Flexcut knives. In Spain i can't find the other knife marks. I feel like the Helvies, but it's complicated with the pandemic. I like the Moras, I have them all (or so I think) but the blades of the knives are too thick to carve details
Both Mor and Flexcut are great choices, and to be honest is all most people will need. I'm sure once the pandemic lifts, many of the shipping restrictions will lift, making things easier for everyone.
To be honest, all the knives shown in this video use carbon steel blades that have been hardened to that sweet spot between 58 and 62 HRC andwill perform equally if given the same edge profile. If you want the best possible quality knife that comes to you properly shaped and honed razor sharp, Flexcut, OCC, Mora, Ramelson, and Lee Ferguson will be hard to beat.
Great vid I took your advice on the flexcut spoon knife its awesome next ? What's your favorite regular hook knives I'm thinking one with a more rounded blade for deeper bowls and cups . What would your pics be ?
Good question! I have been looking into getting more of those knives myself and have been eyeballing the mora hook knives and the deepwoods Ventures hook knives. Nearly bought the mora hook knife the other day while at my local woodcraft store (rockler) but decided to do some extra research. I currently have two differet beavercraft hook knives but feel a little lacking for some reason.
@@CarvingisFun I used my flexcut spoon knife to make a shot glass but the angle isn't sharp enough to get very deep in a 2" round . Need more hook on the hook knife lol
A detail knife would be a good addition so you can make some of the fine, small cuts. Or a hook knife to make spoons and bowls if your interested. Also gouges and chisels would be a good addition for different kind of cuts.
Meh, no one wants to see my goofy mug :) Plus, I feel like the channel is more about carving and the methods involved instead of me. Maybe one day, but it would have to fit in with the video.
Agree with another viewer who called this a “fun video”. Kudos to your wife for being a good sport through it. Just ordered my first knife, an OCCT with a gripper handle and some basswood. Any suggestions for a good first project?
She had a good time trying out all the knives, it was a fun video to make. Good choice on the knife! Some easy projects would be a dog or bear, both of which I have tutorials for on the channel.
Thanks! I currently have no method for accepting donations, but I may set up something in the future. I also know very little about bitcoin. How does one send tips with the currency?
@@CarvingisFun If you had coinbase or something, I would just send you some as a tip. Kinda like paypal. Bitcoins at 60k! Its been a wild ride lol Been watching you awhile. Love the videos.

Sometimes comfort is the deciding factor! If you cant hold the tool comfortably for a long period of time it's not the tool for you.
speak for yourself. my hands are huge.
"dont worry just focus on the knifes"
:)
The ramelson is absolutely pretty! I would pick it on looks also! But for carving I pick OCCT, flexcut, Mora120,
Indeed it is a nice looking knife! With a little bit of work on the edge, It can be a real contender for only $20

i have the ramelson and a beaver craft knife, both great, i would recommended the ramelson for a beginner.

Oh I hear ya! I remember at the beginning I thought I didn't need a glove, 10 min later I was looking for a bandaid.

Mine would be, OCC, tools, Lee, Ferguson, and flex cut
all good choices!
How are two cherries for a start?
Go for it! In my opinion, the knives are similar toPfile but nicer. I have a set and like them a lot.
Which knife manufacturer use or has the best metal blades for whittling or carving.

I have the KN14 Roughing Knife from Flex Cut and made most of your step by step videos with it. Which one would you recommend next?

Of the easier to get ones, Flexcuts detail knife is one of the better options
You should do a face reveal all anyone ever sees of you are your hands

Ah, gonna have to look into getting into that. So many new things to learn!!
Cannot get OCC Tools in UK, damn it😟
They are also currently getting harder to find over here as well. The availability of OCC has dropped by more than half since I started this channel!
I really want to try the Helvie knife , but they seem impossible to get your hands on ! Everytime I look online they are always sold out .
See if you can send em an email and get on a wit list.
Lol. “I feel like a pirate.”
