something from old kof that i wish they'd bring back is having your other characters in the background durring your fight and have them react to stuff that happens in the fight
Yeah, coming from 98UM seeing a lack of team-mates in the background in 15 left a sour taste in my mouth. I miss that so much
I know they are there for All Stars
@@arbi9506
They dropped it in '99, and it's been like that ever since.
@@slimballs9650I'm pretty sure it's in 98 too
@@NoctuaOlivae
Yep. I fixed it to reflect that.
Max: i killed you
Rugal: my death was greatly exaggerated.
he will come back 3 more times or 4
@@aliceyagami8260 not canonically
@@Fusso the door for that is now wide open due to Verse, however.
*Then:* "At least Rugal's dead now. Definitely."
*Now:* "It turned out that Rugal was not actually dead."
"So, you're the punk I've heard about."
Man, seeing Eiji Kisagari is such a blast from the past. He hasn't been in a KOF since XI. Miss his crazy ninja ass
Man after Jenet & Gato i am hopeful he will be back 😭❤🙌
Yea i'm really hoping he makes it in, he doesn't appear nearly enough in KOF, he's only had like 3 appearances. KOF '95, '98 UM, and XI. Krauser is another character i love that barely ever shows up, hopefully he makes it as well.
Does 98 UM count?
I miss May Lee, myself.
Him, Saisyu, and the USA Sports team, one of the oldest yet also forgotten characters of KOF outside of dream matches
Rugal: (Returns)
Max: "My dissapointment is immeasurable... and my day is ruined."
Max is gonna face his evil self once more.
probably 3 times, in 98, 02' and probably in UM too, if he manages to get there atleast without having to continue against one of the NESTS bosses.
@@carltasticdrew9633 thr grey skin makes Rugal look like Bizarro Max
Funny thing is Kyo in KOF 95 is some of if not _THE_ best character, either matching nor overpowering Boss Rugal
he'll be in xv??
Max is like: "that feels great to do"... Benimaru is like "thank you" lol 😂
Fun fact: In the second stage, the animation in the first round of the fight creates a disadvantage for chin as he has a bigger delay than other fighters until he actually touches the ground, this means that chin can actually get ko'd whitout even getting to move in the round.
If you play Iori against Chin you can do a rekka for free!
@@DARS_04 the legendary 10-0
@@kaicfer or dreaded, depending on which character you play as mostly.
Noobs pretending to know KOF. Chin can never be KO'd but more like 70% damage
Rugal just doesn’t know when to quit, huh. That said, I did appreciate the nod to Fatal Fury with Terry & his opponent jumping from the background on his stage.
I love Fatal Fury's stage!
In fact I love all the stages in KOF 95!
Art of Fighting, Women Fighters, Psycho Soldier, Ikari, and Fatal Fury stages are my favorites.
KOF 95, has the best presentation and stages in the classic 2D games
Fun fact: Since the round starts so soon after the characters land, some characters are guaranteed a hit on Chin right at round start b/c his height makes him take longer to land on the ground and be controllable
@@Unfunniest_Asian Yea Iori literally gets an infinite on him off of that lol.
It is literally what kills Rugal in the end (he doesn't know that he should taper off the Orochi energy and keeps pumping, thus the overload absolutely fucking murders him)
A word of warning for KOF '97: The Japan Team's ending isn't the main ending for that entry. You have to make an edit team of Kyo, Iori and Chizuru if you want to see the proper ending.
The sacred treasure trio
NO NOOB PLEASE. ლ( @ ^ ‿ ^ @ )ლ
I had the PS1 version of this one as a kid, man it literally loaded after every single round. The best thing about that port was the remixed music.
That was the draw back to that arranged music. It did that on Saturn, PS1 and NeoGeo CD although Saturn didn't have the arranged music but bigger resolution.
This smile in KYO portrait is so cursed...
"AY, YO... WANNA PLAY SOME KOF?"
That is creepy as f***
@@meganinten0078 Gotta check the WANNAKOF character in MUGEN videos... That's as funny as it's cursed!
HEY BUDDY WANA PLAY SOME KOF
sure bro, u can move that gun away now
Bodegateem
Fun fact: in the women's stage, when the music changes to the harmonica part, the guy in the middle table draws out his own harmonica to go along with it. This can only be seen during a match, though. If it happens during a character transition then it won't trigger.
Sakurai was an kof 95 fan, he actually created smash with an experience in the arcade. He was challenged in the arcade and in japan you can't see who challenges you, he beat the first character, then the next one but he felt the 2nd character was a lot weaker, he checked his oponent arcade and yes there was a guy and his girlfriend, the girlfriend was playing the 2nd char, so he realised he beated the guy first. That made him feel really bad, so he tried to create a fighting game (or party whatever) where everyone could have fun, i think this is part of the reason he says its a party game sometimes.
The best part is Harada heard this story. His response? It was pretty much: "I would've rematched them and bodied them even harder"
"press a button, get f***ed"
A true definition of SNK bosses
More like true definition of old-school fighting game AI.
15:24 The "ninja guy" is Eiji from Art of Fighting 2. Also, thanks for not skipping out on '95 for the legacy Max!
You have to play with multiple teams to get actual canon, mostly Japan Team, Yagami Team and Sacred Treasures Team.
For the Orochi Saga at least.
Really? Good to know!
Still amazes me how good SNK's animations still look to this day.
And KoF 94 and 95 are the "bad" looking ones. 96 to 2002 look great even today.
@@DARS_04 you mean kof14 and the 15 one are the only bad looking kof in 3D? Hellyeah.... History gonna repeat itself
For Me KOF2000 Is My Favorite Of The Older Ones. KOF Evolution Was The 1st One I Bought. Long Live Sega Dreamcast ❤.
Look at that, character development: Rugal in '94 was super offensive and it got him killed. Now he is back and more defensive but still rocking super strong attacks he can flash at you.
He learned!
There's something i guess he'd never saw: in those old KoF, if you press ABCD while being grabbed, a background character of your team will jump on the foreground to release you. I think this was the birth of the Idea of assists!
It worked until 97
@@luiscastro292 in 98 can be done too
This was the very first KOF game I played when it was on the Saturn. This is bringing back some very good memories.
Don't let the graphics fool you. The engine may look almost identical to '94, but it's a much smoother and polished experience when you're playing it. It's like the jump Tekken made when going to Tekken 3.
What about Tekken 2?
@@BigBoy257Bout the same as Tekken 1 but graphically looks better
There's a reason why Rugal is infamous in Mexico.
La razon por la que muchos jugadores perdian el dinero para las tortillas
@@meganinten0078 oh
That's why Sakurai recommends KOF 95 🤠👌
Sakurai was such a pro gamer of this game.
Even winning some tournaments.
Hideaki Itsuno was also a fan of KOF
95's arranged OST was my gateway into rock music.
It's still my favorite KOF to this day. I got the PS1 version in '97.
Mine was 96...
Kyo is the most broken character in 95.
His 75-shiki(236+kick twice) is a double kick attack where the weak moves quick, and the strong flings the opponent high so you can chain additional hits. But if you use it as 236+weak kick, strong kick, it starts quick and flings the opponent so you can do it again, becoming an easy infinite.
Kyo ironically comes close to being the most broken since Eiji and Iori exist along with the boss characters who are tourney legal as a matter of fact lol
Kyo has a legit, not infinite 95% combo that isn't really hard to pull off. You need to get Kyo both into the red and max gauge, which isn't hard for the 2nd or 3rd round.
Me: "I'm glad Max is sticking with the main teams for this legacy! I can finally get some KOF lore!"
Max: *skips cutscenes on accident for the second video in a row*
Me: 🤡🤡🤡
Well for what it’s worth, KOF 94 and 95 are probably the least story heavy games in the series. Besides the dream matches of course. 96 is when the story really takes off.
I like how he accidentally skipped both Saisyu scenes.
Saisyu: I'm a joke to you?
Kyo, Iori, Chizuru are the canon endings for KOF ‘96 and ‘97.
He better be playing team sacred treasure for 96 and 97

Fun facts.
Sakurai was a pro gamer of KOF 95, winning many tournaments.
Hideaki Itsuno, the creator of Rival Schools was also a fan of KOF series.
Kyo's prototype design was based on Kaneda from the manga/anime Akira and you can see how the stage for Japan Team in KOF 94 is based on Neo Tokyo
SNK really loves Akira
K9999 being a complete reference to Tetsuo too
So Daimon teamed up with Kaneda and Polnareff. Also, this is the game in which KoF overtook Fatal Fury as SNK's flagship fighter(it would later also overtake SamSho and Metal Slug as SNK's flagship title).
I guess the same goes for the Kyo Clones, and Kusanagi.
Kyo however ended up being modeled after a character from another NeoGeo game called Mutation Nation, check the game's cover art, it's just Kyo with red gloves
@@igotmysaucestraight So was the Mutation Nation Kyo based on Kaneda?
Glad to see Max having more fun with '95 with the gameplay in general especially with Benimaru & Kyo than the depressed state he was in against Rugal in '94.
Also, love the revelation of why Saisyu is fighting against Kyo and how he survived in '94 25:32.
Well yeah when you drop down to the easiest difficulty it suddenly stops being a problem for some reason
Beein able to recognize the buffs on the mechanics and also the movelist on chars is a awesome experience to watch, the stages are great on this one as well
Maaan goosebumps seeing these, used to play 95 in the arcades as a kid, i always loved SF but since i was a kid i find SNK games like more cooler? Characters look amazing and the moveset, stages also super attacks were a thing starting with Art of Fighting, man even Sakurai loves 95 for its strategy, legendary legacy, now looking forward till we reached the end.. man this making the wait for KOFXV harder 😂 the collector edition of XV is called "Omega" 👀 he's coming back as DLC for sure 😂 love the small details in these games like when daimon do the earth slam and the opponents and allies react to that 😂 these small touches made these games special, also the stages in 94 & 95 were fantastic but also in 96 they were great, can't wait for 97 98 99!!
This video was an absolute delight to watch. The little jokes along with the gameplay make it a genuinely enjoyable viewing experience. Your videos on KoF got me interested in the series and gave me the nudge to buy KoF15. It’ll be my first game in the series but the characters look so cool.
That's awesome! Sakurai adding Terry to Smash and Max doing these KoF videos got me into the series. I started with Garou then played KoF 13, 98, and 96. I'm renting KoF 15 from Gamefly this week to try out and may even keep it.

Omega Rugal's design in KOF 95 is the BEST!! He actually looks like a monster.
I like his robotic arm and that win pose where he scratches himself on purpose...
I like how his theme in '95 feels like 'Rugal's final chance to win' because it actually is
the 2002 (not um) version of Rugal's theme also have the similar vibes when you fight against him
After beating Saisyu: "OH GOD that was bad. Glad it's over n-"

Me: NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
King of Fighters 95 is the best, this is the one game that kept the arcades full in South America and kept us waiting for the next year. This was the game changer from Street Fighter for fighting fans at least for me.
As someone who is new to this series my god it was ahead of its time
I love how Benimaru's recolor is straight up just Polnareff.
The staff called Benimaru Polnareff amongst themselves during production.
Max: We are playing with canon teams for the lore.
Also Max: **skips the lore**

0:26 Max, that statement aged poorly. The king of kings is back and is more of a piece of s#!t than ever.
Man, seeing Saishu in action in this was exciting, especially how it just led up to how he plays in future games.
Man, I love KOF.
When your POW meter is fully charged, you have the ability to cancel with special moves or supers when you block an enemy's attack.that's what made this game so scary and fun. Literally you can get punished by supers when they block a jump kick
Max: Benimaru is kinda sick!
me: totally agree. He's easily one of my favorite KOF characters of all time

@@KikoElGatito It's pretty obvious in hindsight but I got into KoF before Jojo's and weirdly never made the connection until now. Polnareff is Best Jobro BTW.
I love watching these videos late at night before sleep. Love the nostalgia and hood vibes
At 29:11- SNK “ Welcome to KOF 95 Max!” Overall ‘95 has better improvements to ‘94 though the damage wasn’t consistent. Normals especially C and D did massive damage yet supers sometimes didn’t kill characters with low health like you think it should. Team edit and better combos are a plus especially adding Kyo’s nemesis to 1995: Iori Yagami! Thanks again for this KOF walk through memory lane.
"But I'll be back... YOU JERKS!"
One Year Later-
Max: *BUT I KILLED YOU!*
FINALLY !!!!! Max plays KOF 95 I've been waiting years for this to happen this game is not the best kof but it has a special place in my heart because it was the first one I played back 1995 when I was 4 years old I fell in love with the series ever since
In case anyone wondered how "SNK Boss" became an epithet amongst gamers.
KOF95' has a special place in my heart since it was the first PS1 game I bought with my own money. Didn't know about what exactly it was, but thought it was cool with all the familiar characters from Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury.
I like that Max appreciates Benimaru, he has been one of my favourite characters since day 1. Beni and Kim
it's so weird that in later games there's this whole lore about the flame artifacts and how Kyo got his, but here, we clearly see that his father has some flame moves. Moreover, it's more odd in a roaster full of elemental/magic attacks. The implication is that without it, the person would have just normal moves, as what happens with Iori, but then, other people just can do thunder, spiritual, ice and so on by their own.
I dunno, I get it why they did it, but I always found a more limiting lore rather than giving more possibilities. Would be better if they just embrace that people can do whatever element moves if they train in it, in my opinion.
It's already like that isn't it? Which is how Terry and all of Tung's disciples can use energy moves, other than Shun Ei who has his own shit going on.
19:05 Yamazaki and B. Mary chillin' in the background
'95 has some of the best stages in the whole series
KOF 95 was my entry to the franchise. I remember my uncle giving me the game back in the day, he had a friend who worked at a local game shop and got treated to stuff they had in stock. I'd always been interested in SNKs stuff cuz I'd see cabinets for Metal Slug and Samsho in random places and my tiny kid brain was like "Wtf... Those games are WAY cooler than Street Fighter!!", but getting '95 for myself on the PSX* was what rly converted me to a full-on SNK fan.
*the difference between the remixed music on the PSX version vs the arcade version is crazy, though. This my first time hearing the chiptuned versions.
This one. This one right here is the game that introduced me into KOF. I had the Gameboy version of the game, which was missing a few key characters, but had Nakoruru as a hidden fighter at the end of the game!
I believe this is the first KOF game I’ve ever played. (It’s been years ago!) it’s one of the first games that impressed me on the power of PIXEL GRAPHICS. Still gorgeous to this day!!
In the Summer of '95 the arcade by my Grandma's house actually had a few Neo Geo machines and I'd play The King of Fighters '95 religiously often playing as King, Mai Shiranui, and Sie Kensou. It remains my all-time favorite fighting game.
Poor Saisyu got his backstory skipped once again.
Can SNK bring back having your teammates watch you from the background
Would be awesome.
Love seeing you play KoF 95 Max! I had so much fun with this one as a kid
This one is one of the best KOFs imo. Still looks so good
I take it Max is slowly becoming a Benimaru fan? I've only played a few KOF games here and there. But its always nice to see someone get into a series or back to older titles when a new one drops soon.
I can not wait until you get to KOF '98 and onward. That's when things will start to get cookin'.
The stages in kof 95 looks just amazing!!!
Kyo & Benimaru: Let's go, Max like us
Goro: And me too
Kyo & Benimaru: Umm....
Goro: Me too...right
I remember when I did my lore run for this game I did Kyo super through Rugals Kaiser Wave and it looked super hype. Too bad I didn't record it
I also didn't bat much of an eye for Benimaru until i started playing '98 more seriously, he quickly became one of my favorites and certified main for games to come.
Man, those "lEvEl 1" comments...
I love KOF, but its Latin-American fandom doesn't give it the best image at times.
It's probably the worst part of the Fandom.
Except 14 I play all KOF games on level 1 lol
I suck at fighting games but I own a ton of them.

I went to bed and woke up Max still dealing with Rugal bullshit. 😂🤣😂
Now we in 95 and the beginning of:

And yes 94 through 97 is pretty much team Japan all the way through. Then 99 through 2001 is K's team and after that, it is a bit of a toss up. Still going to be fun watching you go through that hell of fighting Rugal lol.
Isn't Sacred Treasures Team the default story team on '97?
Nice Akira reference XD XD
Fun fact.
Kyo's prototype design was based on Kaneda.
@@meganinten0078 Oh I knew about that thanks to extensive research and i was very surprised that they actually took inspiration from Akira not once but twice lol.

the arranged soundtrack for this game is one of my favorite fighting game soundtracks of all time.
Special ending, also in the Nei Geo CD version. In the Neo Geo CD version of this game the Chinese team turn into band members at the end of the game The old man plays drums Kensuo plays guitar and Athena sings lead. Athena sings her song while the credits roll at the end of the game. She also sings the background music in her stage in KOF 94 and KOF 96 on the Neo Geo CD version. She also sings her background in KOF 94 Rebout 10th Anniversary, if you choose arrange soundtrack version on PS2
KoF 13 has remakes of the 95 Rivals team stage and the 96 Esaka stage if remember correctly. We got a cool Tengu stage for Mr Karate.
Im hyped for Goenitz XD and Igniz too
Summoning electricity while ankle deep in water was probably not Benimaru's brightest idea.
"Press a button, get fucked". As a guy who can't play KOF to save his life that comment is the most relatable thing in the world to me 😂😂
95 is definitely one of the best.

Max: "I beat him far and square."
Rugal: "Have you met Geese, I will never die."
Question to Max and the chat: Who is the most persistent and annoying villian in the KOF and Fatal Fury series Rugal or Geese? Since these two don't seem to stay dead in either.
In my opinion, it has to be Geese. Canonically Rugal died after 2 games but Geese just keeps appearing and not dying.
Rugal died in this game, Geese eventually died I think in the 4th game for Fatal Fury but hasn't died in the King of Fighters yet so lore wise Geese. However, in terms of their difficulty when fighting them , easily goes to Rugal.
Difficulty wise the edge goes to Rugal, also he posses the signature and special moves of Krauser and Geese and mastered them.
And now, after KOF XIV ending, all of them are resurrected...
Ah the memories trying to beat KOF 95 on the hardest difficulty in arcades.
KOF '95... WELCOME TO SNK BOSS SYNDROME. The action, stages, bgms were great. Rugal is more pissed than ever and everybody stepped up. On my end, KOF '95 Ryo was one the toughest characters that I've ever faced that's not a boss character. He was with the shits.
Is Max actually trying to stick to canon winning teams this time?
At which game is he gonna give up and go custom teams?
I doubt that will be the case at all, seeing how later games become easier. Except XI.
I mean… he's got a giant kitty… so he can't be _all_ bad, right? 😼
I remember King of Fighters 95 being the first KoF to make both bosses playable via code.
I appreciate the editors choices of the overlays so far
The Continue Service feature was added since vanilla KOF'98, but I hardly used them back in it's days, as the arcade operator had the continue option disabled by default, meaning that "1 match lost=You Lose, Game Over..." this game was overall better, but still kind of a pain to deal with just like 94.
Have This On My Sega Saturn 🔥🔥🔥
This Rugal is much more doable than 94', plus his battle theme is badass. I remember Saisyu spamming his special move like crazy when he was low HP.
Y’know what? Especially for the era, Saishu actually living instead of dying, and still being alive to this day, is some real subversion of expectations. It’s not everyday that you see the father of a Japanese protagonist living.
I kind of like the small uses of blood in this game. I wouldn’t mind seeing it comeback in a future KOF game, but I doubt that will happen because that’s what SamSho does.
Rugal Bernstein also had been the final boss in KoF 1998 and 2002. Or at least a clone of him…so you‘ll never know. Also I think he is one of the most stylish bosses in KoF. Definately better than Orochi.
@snkrules KoF 1996 must be a Dream Match, too then. Because Wolfgang Krauser dies in Fatal Fury 2 in 1992, and Geese Howard died in Ff Real Bout, which also had been released before KoF 1996. Also the Art of Fighting Team is about 10 to 15 years older than the Fatal Fury team, according to Art of Fighting 2 (young Geese), yet they don‘t look like it in KoF.
@snkrules Different Universe? Is that now everyone‘s excuse for „bad/missing continuity“? In Fatal Fury Wild Ambition (which basically is the 3D Remake of FF1) Ryo is 15 years older than Terry and Andy, and also owns the title of Mr. Karate, btw. One game, which got it right.
@@sunnyfrisch KoF is in different continuity from AoF and FF for the sake of being able to put characters from those games in KoF the way they were in their own series. It wouldn't make sense for Takuma being the way he is or Ryo not being Mr. Karate II otherwise.
@@KuroNoTenno Why not? They could just have made/designed them older. They just forgot back in 1994, that‘s all. They just had not thought about that. Or that 25 years later fans would try to explain everything.
@@sunnyfrisch Because having them all the way they were in their own series was the main idea.
In 96 onwards Kyo develops the bodegas. In 99 he has a new move based on Saisyu while in 97, 98, 2003, NESTS XIII, and XIV he has one of the most overpowered moves in the entire franchise: the Mushiki.
