Known for their advanced metalwork and democratic traditions, as well as ancient Israelite customs including circumcision and scapegoat rituals, the Igbo have blended ancient African and Jewish traditions for centuries, sparking debates on their true identity.
When British colonialism introduced antisemitism into Africa, leading to the persecution of the Igbo people and the brief secession of the Republic of Biafra, the question of to what extent they should be accepted as part of the Jewish people became all the more pertinent.

Please believe that while some rabbis may not agree on the Jewish status of Igbos, a great many Jews do accept those Igbos who practice Judaism as true Jews.

Thank you very much for this exposé. Note also that in 1917, European missionaries dug up ancient artifacts in Igbo land which left them puzzled. These artifacts included the "star of David" . The Igbos were believed to not have had any encoounters with Europeans prior to the British as they were the last to be conquered by the british after decades of raids in which the British used other conquered tribes to ravage Igbo land.
Consequently, the star of David became a feature of the colonial era Nigerian flag.
The missionaries also noticed many similarities between Igbo and jewish traditions including; male circumcision, child naming practices, widows marrying brothers of deceased husbands and many more.
I wish your documentary explored more. There's so much more. Good job though.

I love the Igbo, I'm Greek, but these set of people are special. I can attest to that.
As a dark-skinned Jew (not Igbo), I can say that the Greeks are special too.
Lets not forget that many Igbos were sold into slavery during the trans-Atlantic slave trade, as were my ancestors. I am British, of Jamaican descent. Found out through a DNA test that I am Igbo (and also, oddly, related to Ramses III of Egypt). My DNA test says I share ancestry with Ashkenazi Jews also. All of this was very surprising to me.. but I'm now embracing it all.

“The study of customs and rites and the analysis of the semantics of these African tribes have led many of their observers to propose some hypotheses and even to draw some conclusions. Doctor Allen H. Godbey reached the following conclusion: ‘These factors have a very specific significance if we consider the presence of Judaism among the American Negroes. Hundreds of thousands of slaves were transported to America from West Africa during the trade which started some 400 years ago. What traces of Judaism still remained among the Negroes of West Africa at that period? To the extent that they were persecuted they were more likely than other Negroes to be seized during wars and sold as slaves. It is virtually certain that many part Jewish Negroes were among those sent as slaves to America. How many of them would have been able to conserve some Jewish customs is another question. This conclusion put forward by Godbey, which argues for the existence of a more or less recurrent Judaism in West Africa in the same places as those from which the Negroes were taken, is shared by others, such as Maurice Delafosse. But most significantly it has been adopted by a class of educated Black Americans as a key argument to demonstrate that the Jewish religion is the traditional religion of Africans brought in slavery to the American continent.” (p 235 - 236)

There’s a good reason why people who want to or claim to be Jewish need to follow Halachic guidelines. We don’t believe in self identification.
Judaism doesn’t recognize self identification. To be a Jew you must have a Jewish mother or undergo a halachic conversion.
This is the correct practice and perspective.
So basically any1 in the world can baselessly claim to be of Israelite origin and you will accept it like the ignorant naive sheep that you are (so easily fooled by propaganda), despite the genetic and historic evidence debunking it. By mountains of EVIDENCE and FACTS, the Ashkenaz/Sephardic/Mizrahi Jevvs and Samaritans are the ONLY people as a whole proven to be ACTUAL Hebrew Israelites to any meaningful degree.

As was watching this video, I suddenly became emotional and overwhelmed with tears. Not because I need some sort of pity but i realize that I'm not alone in this struggle for self and collective ancestral identity of my people. Each time I read the old testament, it's as if I'm reading my ancestors history because of the similarities of old Israel and the stories of my people and some things I witnessed growing up in igbo land.
Well done for this video. You have spoken the hidden truth. Every fire starts with a spark. I hope this is the beginning of better things to come to this age-long debate of who truly are the igbos.

you forgot to add that after the war, every Igbo was stripped of their properties and riches and given 20 pounds, everyone literally started all over again. The Igbo are blessed regardless of what anyone does or thinks as is clearly evident in Nigeria and globally. Even when we fall(self-inflicted through our sins or otherwise), we will always rise again as long as we walk in the way of the LORD our GOD, to love and serve HIM and our neighbour as stated in multiple scriptural verses in Deutoronomy and other books.
You will benefit from studying Deuteronomy 28 where both the curses and blessings are described, each the result of wrong-doing and right-living respectively.

I feel insulted when the present day Israel try to vet us Igbo people. We should be the ones vetting Israel. I am an Igbo man and our practises suggest we are an older Hebrew tribe. Its like a child(present day Israel) trying to claim he is the source of his fathers ancestry.
All Igbo traditions are old Hebraic practises. The Bible even speaks of the direct effect of Gods actions towards his children...part of which is that they would be sold to slavery. Slavery did not happen to the present day Israel.
The prophesies of the last days affect the lands where the Igbos inhabit currently, more than it does the state of Israel. Every-time the state of Israel has been attacked, there is a spiritual attack on the Igbos in Nigeria.
Our culture and traditions have been there since way before the British came to Africa.
It is quite insulting to say the British brought Judaism to us. Its actually the other way around...The British stole Judaism and aspects of tested civilization from us. They took part of our culture and made it a religion.
Judaism is not our religion. It is our culture. The British came and traded Christianity to us calling even more of our deep Hebraic practises uncivilized. To suggest that Britain "taught us Judaism" is crazy and annoying. Go and read about the escapades of British generals that touched on Eastern Nigeria.

The current state of Israel is made up of descendants of Europeans who were moved to the Middle East after Hitler tried to eliminate them in Europe. Before the supported move, most of them were missionaries who spent a long time in Africa to learn our traditions and they have no other ties to the land..
How do you ask a people whose traditions reflect all the teachings of Moses for proof? We should be the ones asking you for proof of your stolen heritage.
For books, go and read books like the experiences of Oludah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa who was sold to slavery and bought his freedom, got educated and started writing to preserve his heritage.

Great video! I am Igbo. Growing up in my village I always heard that we're Hebrews. They sang it and still sing it in our cultural war dance called "Ohafia War Dance" that's a historical background of our ancestry. It amazes me everytime I read certain things in the old testament that are exactly our cultural practices. Even some of our native names are in the old testament. I don't think these are mere coincidences. As a matter of fact, I have been seeking to investigate this so I'm glad I came across this video.

What does Abia mean in Igbo language?
My grandmother always told me stories about the laws of the Seventh year (she was never a Christian, never literate, was in her eighties when I was born), apparently it use to be huge in our local igbo culture back in the days before colonialism Era (still is in some places in igboland), when slaves must be set free and basically almost every single law as written in the laws of Moses when you read the book of Leviticus , was really astonished when I learned this for myself. There's definitely a connection not a coincidence.
That's why Igbo businessmen settle their servants (umu boi) after seven years.

I was born in Lagos Nigeria. I grew up knowing that we were hated despite not having been to Igboland. Our teachers constantly tell us how we can never become presidents or the vice president of the country.
I moved back to my village, learnt ancient customs and traditions (Omenala, or Omenana) without reference or knowledge of the Hebrew traditions. Surprising to me, they are in tandem with the Hebrew traditions. Circumcision, burial, sacrifices, scape goats, customs about women on their mensural cycle, weddings, marrying from only your kin, etc. I am glad and proud to be Igbo... Whether I am from ancient Israelite is something I do not know or care about. I am just proud to be Igbo despite the hate I get for it.

I'm glad people get to know the history of Igbo in Nigeria. I'm from Southern Nigeria and I can say the igbos and Israelites have a lot of historical similarities. Igbos in Nigeria are hated by other ethnic groups because of the excellent qualities they posses which is similar to antisemitism that the Israelis face. The Nigerian government has vowed to never let an igbo man become president which is sickening because without igbos in Nigeria today... hmmm.. smh😌...

Thank you for doing this episode. Every Igbo I met in the most random of circumstances emanated a strong vibe of kinship. I still wonder why, now that I know that some of them do indeed practice Judaism, but maybe it is what it is! Growing old brought me to be somewhat less suspicious of my own intuitions. I remember that terrible Biafra War I watched on the French State TV when I was a 10-years old. My entire family felt very strongly in favor of the Igbo rebels, the more so when Nasser's Egyptian aviation was bombing the living crap out of them with Soviet-supplied MiG-21s after trying and failing to do the same to us in Israel.
I remember watching and discussing the Biafra genocide in school. It was heartbreaking, and generally there was support for the formation of a State of Biafra. This was in South Africa, where we are all aware of the need for a country that represents the people.

Check the history and find that Igbos were not treated as slàvèś after the war as should be how all defeated people in wars were treated. Why take them three years? Even Ojukwu himself left Nigeria on the forceful insistence of his generals, including Effiong cos he initially refused to leave. However, when your lost loyal men vehemently insist and challenge you then, you know you had to bir to their pressure. The books and even lifetime accounts of the generals are all over UA-cam. Biafra never lost but Obasanjo had to persuade and plead that enough was enough as Gowon had sent him to persuade for an end to the long fought war. Stop arguing like the typical, illiterate Nigerians, especially some Yorobers, which I suspect you are. The books and videos are out there. Go read and listen to real accounts. An an igbo person we have alot of towns and villages with same names is the Bible and our cultures and traditions are similar with that of the Hebrew in the Bible so we strongly believe we are from Israel and we have always support and pray for Israel even if they don’t want us
I believe what Igbos really need will be brotherly, cultural, economic cooperation with the Jewish nation, the land of our ancestors.
In Nigeria, Igbos have land that is uncontested. I don't believe there is any need abandoning good land. To make matters serious, Igboland has many natural resources, and is very rich in oil and gas.
In fact, Igboland has more gas reserves than any other country in Africa. It makes sense for the Israelite people to still keep hold of these treasures. It was obviously given to us by G-d.
I know Thomas Sowell compared the treatment of Igbos in northern Nigeria (which included a pogrom in 1966) to treatment of Jews. He said they were both “middlemen minorities” in that they were outsiders who owned a lot of businesses. Same as the Greeks and Armenians in the Ottoman Empire or Chinese in Southeast Asia.

Of course recognition from the State of Israel is a tricky thing, as there are already so many Rabbinic laws governing who is Jewish 'enough' to do certain things, like get married. A new lost tribe will need to really prove that they are Israelites. (Im not talking about this case, but any and all future cases)

As a sephardic jew, this is something I criticize about the israeli jewish system, mostly the rabbinic and orthodox part of it.
It has become so closed and politicized, so strict and absurd, that instead of welcoming and sharing our heritage, it has blocked access to many members to form part of the community.
That's precisely why for some people, jews around the world are viewed as racists and xenophobic.
This mentality needs to change if we want to make a sense of logic between what we say and what we do.
Some of the most vocal antisemites I've ever met, are ostracized patrilineal Jews who got rejected for having gentile mothers.
While others beg for acceptance as Jews while still rejected.

True, no society is perfect but I’ve heard of many Ethiopian Israelis talking about the bigotry they sometimes face it’s sad. Even a black American community is in a tuff situation bc the state no longer recognizes them as Jewish, bc they aren’t Rabbinic or Talmudic “kinda like the Ethiopians lol”.

I was privileged to grow up in the homes of a grandfather and an uncle both of whom were not Christian. I participated in some of their rituals; including those for atonement and special feasts. Although the word then was that we were Israelite, I did not develop any real interest in the subject matter until high school where I read Leon Uris', Exodus. I've since discovered on an ancient map the spot where a particular Igbo community may have lived. It's in Samaria. There are also practices we engage in as Omenana which can only have come from the sojourn in Egypt. I sincerely believe that at least one of our many practices was instituted by Moses, himself. And that his descendants and those of Aaron are alive and well in Igboland.
But, first things first; we must get Biafra and everything else shall be revealed.

I’m an igbo person my father is from Ikwerre tribe (which makes me also from Ikwerre tribe) One day my father told me we are Israelites and I said “ ok how is that?” and he told me that we just are. And I always thought that he was stretching it. We are Christians now, but I have always rooted for the jews instinctively. Jewish people follow their moral compass ( most of them) and I have always respect that for them. I dont considere myself a jew but I am Christian and my soul was made by the one and Only God that came to us in this world as a Jewish man name Jesus Christ!
Your father is correct. He’s saying we are Israelites by lineage or bloodline (genetically). We now have the history books 📚 and science 🧬 to back it up. It’s not a stretch at all. What a blessing for the Israelites to be believers in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Under Jewish law it passes through the mother or conversion but Biblical ancient Israelite ancestry is through the father and it’s a nationality and there is no conversion. You are either born an Israelite or you are not an Israelite.
Similar to being born your father’s child, there is no conversion. You are born your father’s child or you are not.
