It wasn't Hadrian that first used the word "Palestina"... it was the greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BCE, during Alexandre the Great's campaign. He used that word as a reference to the Philistines.

They put in power Herod the Great and the kingdom had the same name of the dinasty. The romans divided the land between the sons: Archelaus, Philipp and Antipas, plus some little areas to Salome I. In the end they "eroded" the areas assigned to all the kings until only Galilee and Judaea kept a king (Judaea is important since it's the origin of the name "Jew"). After two generations of kings a rebellion started in 66 and king Agrippa fled under roman protection and the roman army started a war wich impeded any stable rule until Hadrian was able to effectively win and in 135 put all the land under roman rule. At that point, without a king, and divisions between heirs they simply used the name they historically used for the whole region: Palestina. “Palestine” has always referred to a region. For the 400 years prior to WW1, it was part of Syria, which was a province in the Ottoman empire. During this period, I don’t know how the residents of Palestine identified themselves in national terms; my guess is Syrian.

The people who lived in this land have adopted different religions throughout the times, from pre historic religions to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. That also means that with every transition some of residence had to leave due prosecution, also since it was mostly ruled by foreign rulers. The actual current problem is that when Israel was recognized, it was declared by new jewish settlers to the land, mainly fleeing Europe and Russia, and calling on jews from around the world to come and join them. So for the people who lived in that land, being from all 3 religions by the way, felt that they are losing their land to foreigners. Thats the actual problem, not that its not a jewish/christian/muslim land, since its all of them!!

The people who lived in this land have adopted different religions throughout the times, from pre historic religions to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. That also means that with every transition some of residence had to leave due prosecution, also since it was mostly ruled by foreign rulers. The actual current problem is that when Israel was recognized, it was declared by new jewish settlers to the land, mainly fleeing Europe and Russia, and calling on jews from around the world to come and join them. So for the people who lived in that land, being from all 3 religions by the way, felt that they are losing their land to foreigners. Thats the actual problem, not that its not a jewish/christian/muslim land, since its all of them!!
The real problem is the lack of ability on the part of the Arabs to accept that anyone but Muslims could govern a nation-state there. Otherwise, they could have very well accepted the original 1947 UN partition proposal.

That is a major simplification. I’m certainly not saying that the Arabs have no rights. But I am saying that they can’t have it all! 1) Jewish people had continuously lived there throughout the centuries. 2) Since the end of the 19th century, much land was bought legally and was Jewish owned. 3) Anyone rejecting that Jerusalem was originally the capital of the Jewish kingdom either has no knowledge or is being disingenuous. 4) the original partition into two states offered to the 2 peoples by the UN was probably a very good deal for both. It was rejected by the Arabs, and the Jews in their new state were attacked by all the surrounding countries. 5) If the Palestinians would put down their arms there would be peace. If the Israelis put down their arms there would be no more Israel. 6) When Israel withdrew from Gaza and left it to the Palestinians hundreds if not thousands of Israelis had to be forcefully removed from their homes there. 7) Most Arab Israelis are happy to live in a democratic country with full citizen rights. The other Palestinians should move on, make peace and build better lives in an independent state. Unfortunately, Hamas and Hezbollah, radical Islamists, want to destroy Israel and take back all of “Palestine”. They are in fact the aggressors. They are bolstered (and used) by a variety of Muslim countries because at least they have one enemy - Israel- instead of just fighting among themselves...

But, to address your main point, there was neither a Palestinian state/government before 1948 nor any time in history. The Ottoman Empire was ruled by the Turks. You’re right about the Ottoman Empire welcoming Jews after the inquisition. The fact is that Jews and Muslims lived side by side for centuries before 20th century nationalism and new radical Islamic movements were born. The reality is that whenever there was a crisis Jews suffered as a minority in both Christian and Muslim countries. They were the scapegoat and even in normal times did not have the same rights as the majority. In any case, if you look at the founding of any state or determining of borders it is usually through force and war. I believe that the Jews had a perfect right to finally establish a state in their historic homeland. The Muslim world should accept it. The question has to be answered, who held sovereignty over the land, and that is the League of Nations since they held sovereignty, the policy paper could not dictate, but it could guide, that is why it is mentioned in the beginning of the Mandate of Palestine.
