I love the fact that you remind people that not everyone can afford to eat the entire thing in one sitting. We weren't struggling by any means growing up, but as you get older, you start to realize the small things your parent's used to do to put food on the table and make sure you weren't hungry. Awesome cheap meal idea, thank you! Also, almost 900k? Congrats my man!
Yes! definitely a video of weighed meats before and after cooking would be interesting , even frozen vegetables too Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family .
Thank you Wolfe! Even though I have a comfortable life now, it has not always been the case. There are times when I wished I had access to this information because we really needed it then. I remember how helpless and ashamed I felt that I could not provide better for my family. So I thank God for you and for your mission to help struggling families because no one deserves to feel that way.
Don’t blame yourself, you did the best you could. Even when I was struggling, I had already raised my son, so it was just me and on days that I made do with a cheap lunch, unhealthy or something small, I always reminded myself, there’s always tomorrow and I’m getting thru the day. I just ate some spaghettios but this time it was just because I’m bored and don’t wanna cook, but if I do, I’ll know I’m doing the best I can and try hard to eat vegetables and drink water, and maybe pop in a casserole to get thru a tiring work week! ❤
Been a big fan for many years. Thank you for everything you do. I just saw this for the first time today. I have been unable to cook much since my stroke. I oftimes feel like a burden to my wife and family. But watching this? I am going to try to make it to surprise my wife. Thank you
Hi Larry, thank you for bringing this to us in time for Thanksgiving. I think that you're doing a great service for people, especially those who couldn't afford it otherwise.
many years ago i had limited funds for food and used to make casseroles like this and eat them for dinner and lunches. thankfully i no longer need to do that and watching these videos makes me count my blessings.
I always enjoy your episodes, but this one is truly outstanding. You're engaging with both the technique and your comments. Your spin on a cottage pie using ground turkey and stuffing is a great Thanksgiving Idea.. I'm a professional chef with a red seal in both cooking and baking and personally think your videos are some of the more interesting and helpful food videos on UA-cam for people on a budget or learning new cooking skills. Keep up the Good Fight.
I’ve hyperlinked your UA-cam channel to about two dozen people on Facebook who are going through tough times. You are making a difference in many lives in your own little way. Thank you
Yeah, the weight measurements before and after cooking would be great. Too many companies claim to be "plumping" the meats with flavourful ingredients but it's often just water. Or barely salted water so they can technically claim it's a "flavouring agent."
Yum! Looks very good. It's almost like a turkey pot pie (which Mom made lately...so good). Ahhh, imagination can be a delicious thing, and definitely is awesome when you're on a budget!
Huge fan here! If I have meats that give off so much moisture, I drain it off and then boil it down to make stock to fry up my veggies for the next meal. Maybe I'm too frugal, but it's all flavor in my eyes! You could have just added it back in instead of the broth for a complimentary turkey flavor!
I want to see that video idea, Larry! I want to know what I am getting for my money, especially from Walmart. As always, thank you so much for sharing with us. Love your content!!! Get well soon!
Looks awesome Larry! That would be a great cold weather meal. Will definitely try it with some of the leftover turkey we'll be sure to have in a few days.
The problem these days is that there are so many people who can't even afford the 81 cents. And things are going to get worse. People need to understand that soon many, if not most Americans will be glad to get this meal. Thanks for the recipe.
It was great the way you talked through the parts you weren't completely sure of. Like draining the excess water off and then adding it back in when moisture was needed. You were a little concerned, but it came out great in the end.
Great video! I have found ground turkey and some ground chicken having a lot of moisture as well. A suggestion, do not remove the water/liquid. It actually has a lot of flavor in it.Turn the heat down to low and slow down the process. It takes twice as long but if you allow it to evaporate away (leaving behind flavor) then turn up the heat and brown the meat.
I did some thing a few years ago similar, but in the crockpot. I took a small turkey breast and cooked it until I was able to shred it with two forks. Then I added my stuffing makes cream of mushroom soup, my vegetables, etc. It was so delicious. We ate on it for almost a week just the two of us at home me and my husband. Plus some of the extra fixings mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, etc. It was very delicious and very easy since I have chronic pain doing a full on meal is really difficult so cooking. The turkey in the crockpot was really good because I could rest and just let the turkey and stuff and do its thing. Thank you so much for all of your advice and hints and tips. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving.
I always do leftover Turkey pulled apart 4 pounds potatoes and 2 pounds carrots and 2 pounds onions and 2 pounds green peas stew. In a large pot on the stove or slow cooker. With holiday deals it comes to 30 $1 big servings.
Hope you are doing better after your accident! Thank you for these budget meal videos. Being on a fixed income, we need money saving meals. We live on ground meats, cream of tomato soup, and fried bologna and grilled cheese sandwiches, with mustard. I appreciate what you do.
skillet, instant pot, crock pot, wahtever floats your boat. I used to love to cook for my girl, two course meals for weekend dinners. Now, i think it's silly. It's me and two dogs and sometimes i maneuver the recipe so we all eat the same thing (i do the onion/pepper or harder spices in a separate set. ONE POT, then divide and take my portion and add some more stuff. Thankyou for your videos. Inspirational.
The video idea of comparing ground meat is actually a killer idea. They 100% add water to the slurry when they make these processed ground meat products. Either that or they way it is processed releases more or less water from the muscle. The "mechanically separated" part is where it gets me.
Now someone using the liquid from cooking ground turkey. Whenever I cook ground turkey with liquid from cooking I add dried minced onion and sometimes fried dried garlic using the liquid to rehydrate them and flavor the meat
Foodlion whole turkey is $.39/lb if you spend $35 on other things. Sweet potatoes are $.25/lb. Ham shank $1.49. Sales before Thanksgiving are worth looking into.
Hope you are feeling better after your accident. I just watched your newest video with the yummy Cajun seasoning and rice, and just remembered that I hadn't seen anything from last week. I guess you're feeling well enough to to make this video!
i make a version of this dish... i brown the turkey(it will eventually brown a bit) add a few cans mixed veggies and turkey gravy...heat those ingredients together in pan, place this cooked mixture in a baking dish...in another bowl combine the stuffing mix and hot water mix well and then top the meat veggie mix, bake covered for 15 minutes and uncovered for 10. we call it thanksgiving pot pie casserole.
Mr. Wolfe, I just saw your gawd-awful accident picture...I hope you are making a good recovery. and are soon back to your normal, jovial self. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
My oven broke so I got an electric roaster oven on sale. Cooked a 12lb turkey 98¢ a lb at Walmart. Great value turkey stuffing which I add celery, onion & sage to the boiling water. I made green bean casserole in the crockpot & was surprised the onions did brown on the top. Next day I made gravy with all the drippings & cornstarch. Added left over turkey so we had it all the next day leftovers. I was lazy having to put the rest of the leftovers away so I just added the leftover stuffing, turkey & gravy to the crockpot with the green bean casserole. It looked dry I added some water & heated it up & it was delicious! My son said: I ate the rest of the thanksgiving mush & it was great😂 All the talk about thanksgiving recipes I can't wait until Thanksgiving & cook it a week before. I'll also be cooking it thanksgiving adding candied sweet potatoes & cranberry sauce on the side & I'll add those two to the leftover mush😂
LoL about the Chinese restaurant all you can eat. Ours gives you a very small plate & they give us dirty looks going up for seconds 🙄 They shouldn't say all you can eat if they don't want that. They could say 1-2-3 plates or what you can eat in an hour or whatever, but that's false advertising all you can eat. No other all you can eat restaurants or buffets have ever given me an attitude & watched me like hawks🙄 I ordered pork fried rice to go & I've never seen such tiny shreds of pork ever before in fried rice. The only bad thing moving from Chicago to rural is the restaurants suck & it's impossible to get good Chinese food or pizza. The 2 Mexican restaurants are very good though thank goodness.
I eat mostly turkey and chicken because of health issues. I have found ways to make them into flavorful meals. I also can't have dairy or fish and seafood. It just makes it more challenging, especially on a tight budget. You have to be willing to experiment. 😊
I have used more than a few of these budget recipes, i cant eat any of them in one sitting, more like 2 or 3 servings. So that is still 2 or 3 dinners, on an entire day of eating maybe a day and a half. Which is not bad for a few bucks. I saw your photo Larry, i hope you are feeling better. I know your awesome family is taking excellent care of you. You are blessed to have such wonderful women as a part of your life😊. You are a very rich man
The FDA or the USDA has a document on liquid loss of meat products when cooked. You should find that document and compare what you get to their findings. That sort of comparison would let you know if the seller of the product is adding water to their product to bulk it up
That looks really good - I'm definitely going to try that sometime. I would be very interested in a video showing the before and after weights of ground meats. I weighed the 1 lb roll of Festive ground turkey after cooking once and it gave me 9 oz of meat. I did the same with the 1 lb roll of Kirkwood ground turkey from Aldi and it gave me 11 oz. I'd be interested to see what you get.
That's a good recipe. Right now, where I live, we can get whole frozen turkeys for .48 a pound. Many churches and food banks are handing them out for free to families in need. Would you be up to a challenge of determining how many meals a family of four can get from a 20lb turkey? I'm sure a big turkey can be slaughtered and refrozen into manageable portions or even made into casseroles and frozen. How would you do it?
I'd give it anywhere from two weeks to a month or so that you can keep eating that turkey, as long as you have a freezer and break it into manageable enough pieces
Larry, I'm sorry to have learned of your automobile accident that has caused you extensive injuries. I hope you're able to have a joyous Thanksgiving.
What? Oh no! Praying you get better soon. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Oh Larry, I didn’t know…. 😢 I adore you and Mrs Wolfe, wish you both health and a happy Thanksgiving. Get well soon my friend

Definitely! Save the broth for flavoring rice or the start of soup.
Glad to see you back man!!! We THE PEOPLE missed you brother!!

Yum! Looks very good. It's almost like a turkey pot pie (which Mom made lately...so good). Ahhh, imagination can be a delicious thing, and definitely is awesome when you're on a budget!
Came here to say the same thing - pot pie or like a thanksgiving “shepherd pie “. Either way it looks delicious.
I would love a ground meat comparison video
I have done similar, but add in mashed potatoes on top of the stuffing mix. Instant potatoes are good and cheap.
I haven't had a pay cheque in three months, so I appreciate this series

It was great the way you talked through the parts you weren't completely sure of. Like draining the excess water off and then adding it back in when moisture was needed. You were a little concerned, but it came out great in the end.
Cooking method is very important when you don't have a full size oven but do have a toaster oven.
Ground turkey tastes amazing mixed with bulk sweet Italian sausage. Makes great chili. Kathy B
You’re appreciated for this series by me. Thank you
You only get what you pay for. That being said, when you are on an extreme budget, you buy what you can afford. Thanks for this!

I think that by adding the salt so early in the cooking process, that only encouraged more and more liquid (water) to be put out during the cooking.
