It hurt like mad, couldn’t even touch it, very painful. In the middle of the night in bed found your video and thought I can’t lose anything if I try it. Counter-intuively I massaged the spot ACROSS the muscle fibres and well honestly, I almost cried in the morning because from the evening before where I could hardly touch the arm as it was like a knife going in, I woke up and found I could rotate my arm, no pain only a soreness like when someone punches you on the arm. I’m freaking out because this shouldn’t be happening! I told friends who play tennis with me and they can’t believe it either. A tear or a strain like I had normally takes days even 2-4 weeks to settle down, applying Arnica cream x3 a day and using the elastic kineo/athlete tape. This is nothing short of miraculous, I simply cannot believe it! I will rest the arm until a week’s time and then carefully return to playing. Thank you guys does not get anywhere near to telling you how grateful I feel for your wisdom!

Wow i thought i was going to need to visit the hospital. I did a high volume of push ups and the pain in my chest remained for a few days after. The methods in the video reduced the pain greatly i think it will be gone in a few days
Had a level 1 strain ignored it causing my dumbass to make it a level 2 strain while benching. I iced it did everything on the internet and google suggestions but nothing was adding up, due to my bad knees causing my minimal leg days and near chest tear causing loss of bench I nearly quit the gym but this video here has truly saved my and my knees have gotten better with mobility training. Truly thank you 2 for what u have done❤️
I literally just strained my right pectoral muscle during boxing training 20min ago. Pain takes a while to build up and then my pectoral stiffined and I came here. Thankfully whilst watching the video I calmed after training and my pectoral released it's tightness mostly, and then the pain went down. Did the exercise and it's now not sore if I don't flex pectoral. Feels like I just got to take a day off the training and I'll be good. Took no pain killers at all.
its been a while but with the strain, did u just have to rest with ice and massaging? if so about how long of that until you were fine to go back to working out
i felt like a sharp/tearing-like pain for a few minutes then after it feels sore and i wasnt able to move much for a bit, after a few hours ive gotten full motion back and no bruising with slight swelling
Cheers for the advice and explanation! After 22 years of working out I got my 1st injury last Monday and I think I have straing or slightly torn my upper pec major during my 2nd to last set of benching. No swelling, no bruise and just some pain and discomfort. Fysio appointment could not be made earlier that Thursday but I read everywhere that quick action is required so with these exercises I can star already. No pushups etc. without the fysio's appoval but the stretching and massage will help.
@@mbyosoyyo25 Hi, sorry to hear you have suffered a similar injury as well. I am doing fine now, thanks. The recovery took at least 8 weeks. During that periode I did go to the gym twice a week as usual yet I incorporated the advice from my physiotherapist for chest exercises: slow repitions, low weights and slowly increasing the weights. And by slow he meant really slow. My max is 100kg for the last bench press set and I start warming up for that exercise using only the barbell. Then 10kg each side with I increase each set with 5kg each side. But now I had to do smaller steps as I was explained that the percentage of weight increase was quite big. So I started with 10kg each side and took steps of 2,5kg instead. Keep doinf that for 2 weeks before increasing the load. And I had to focus on the feeling in my injured peck: a very faint and mild pain is not bad. A bit more is too much. That is very subjective yet I knew what the physiotherapist meant as over the years I had more injuries which were not fitness related such as a major back surgery to avoid becoming fully paraplegic. To recover from that requires similar process in getting confidence in your body and recognizing signals of pain and seperating them into good, warning and bad signals. So basic thing is: keep moving the injured muscle and keep exercising it yet with much slower reps and slow increase of the weights. And stretch frequently like in this video, nornals stretch after 2 sers which I still do nowadays. For bench press specifically I advice you to check the Athlean-X video about that. Jeff Cavalier is a physio himself so he knows what he's talking about. Very useful stuff to improve your movement while working out.
@@cornpit77 could I ask if your initial pain too was very minimal? I think I did the same too. I had 10days off and did the foolish thing to pick up where I left off and injured it today. I'm hoping recurrence doesn't occur too. I'm still just 26 and that would suck. I just pulled my rhomboid couple weeks ago and hence the break
@@eliyadevan5301 Yes, it was very minimal. First signs were nothing out of the ordinary. But the last push that set off things I could clearly feel a more deep pain. Just take your time and slowly build up your weight as explained above. Had no issues after the recovery anymore. Just train repsonsibly, check Athlean-X for good advice on proper setup and movement during common exercises. Or ask a gym instructor with a background in physiotherapy to go through your exercises. These guys know so much about training responsibly. Personally I don't listen to bro-science anymore. Did a session with such an instructor for starting deadlifts. Never dared to do deadlifts as I have had severy back surgery 15yrs ago but learned this year that deadlifts, if done responsibly and with good technique can actually prevent back injuries. Taking a few steps back for a couple of weeks or even some months doesn't hurt your long term abilto workout. Overdoing things too quickly after injuries can permanently put you out of the gym. Good luck and take responsible steps. 👍🏻
@@Dom-hr5lj i'm more or less fully recovered now, some discomfort but can go haam on chest with no problems, definately dont stop training chest, stop when it gets a little painful n drop the weight. If u cant do the 20 kilo bar without pain, then just let it rest for a few weeksn stretch it out daily. My mistake was i went close to my max cus of ego when my body wasnt ready which set me back twice
I started developing chest pain 5 years ago while doing pushups and had a few other episodes which always happened to me after chest exercise. Because it's on the left side, I used to think it's a heart problem and saw many doctors but no problem was found with my heart. Now I'm realizing that it's chest muscle pull or tear. I just don't know what can I do about it after 5 years. I hope it's not too late.😓
Much appreciated! I bench real heavy and two weeks ago felt both sides go. Hurts to bench but I still can. Obviously shouldn’t though until healed. Hopefully heals fast
This is perfect!!! I’ve been dealing with this pain for 6 months! It has improved over the last two months with general stretching, but it’s still a big problem. I am going to get started immediately!
@@abu_alii did not help me. I went through several more months of physical therapy, stretching, exercises, oral medication, topical cream, MRI, then most recently a Cortizone injection. A little over a year with the pain. The MRI showed I had an inflamed shoulder ACL. Everything else looked fine. There’s a lot going on in the shoulder joint. It can be hard to diagnose. I thought it was a Peck. Physical therapist thought it was a bicep tendon. turned out to be the ACL. They all tie in at pretty much the same spot.
Just tore something yesterday, repping 250 on incline bench, pain is on the upper side of chest connecting to front shoulder. Will be trying the massages and stretches daily
Cheers! It took about 7 weeks of mostly rest but I finally healed. Your massage technique was just the ticket! I'd avoid the same injury but I don't know how I did it, oh well. Cheers
LoooL bro trust me that’s what it takes - did a chest strain myself been out 6 weeks - mostly healed but haven’t trained for that’s duration so need to start easing myself back in after two/more weeks. It sucks but life is more than training, better to control the controllables and put ur xp into what you can do whilst ur injured rather than pushing through and reinjuring. Been focusing on diet, and other life stuff. The goal is not to workout right now or for a month or for a year but forever so what’s 6 weeks in the grand scheme of things. Unless you are an athlete it’s not that deep
Thanks Hassan your reply was motivated to me , dr told me recovery will take 6 weeks and i was upset and training thr lower only tho upper is also important, but as you said training is not everything
@@faab338 I am glad my bro - still aint back yet to training upper body properly and was acc feeling a bit down myself last couple of days as it has gotten to 2 months now, but again, what is 2months in the grand scheme of things. Crazy how we forget our own advice. Just set out my rehab and workout regime in absence of a real push day so I dont feel aimless anymore. If people with no legs find a way to get in shape, then its not the injury its the will thats the issue right? Lets go my bro, 6 months from now, we will probably be back to PRs and completely have forgotten about this. See you on the otherside. @Squid Ly Well its been 3 weeks and it has healed a decent amount for sure. Im back to doing a full chest day, slowly increasing the weights every chest day. I do a deep tissue massage on my chest about 4 times a week and I also alternate using Ice on it and A Biofreeze roll on. @@jjtor2607 can you describe your pain? Mine starts mild but after about a week gets really severe and remains that way for a few weeks, then slowly gets better - if I don't put pressure on my chest of course -. It started 5 years ago while I was doing pushups. I had another episode a few months later while doing bench press with a very light weight. Because it's on the left side, I used to think it's a heart problem. I saw multiple cardiologists but they couldn't diagnose any heart problem. But since I was really scared for my heart I just quit gym. Now I'm back at it after 5 years and now I think it's most likely muscle strain and not heart problem because it always happened to me after chest exercise. I'm doing very light chest workout nowadays and it still bothers my chest. I don't know what can I do about it after 5 years. Even if one day I could do 150 ibs bench press that would be great. I strained my muscle 7 months ago on some dumbbell ego lifting at the end of my bulk when my strength was on top. Seeing all those chest gains fade away in the last 7 months has really got me stressed and sad. I have tried everything to get back, and no one knows why it hasn't healed yet. I mean, I am pressing 1L cola bottles, and it doesn't really matter what kind of weight I use because when I am some reps in the set, the pain comes and it starts getting sore, and eventually, if I am continuing, my shoulder takes over completely. Not being able to bench 1 kg 7 months into the injury is just weird. And finally, I might understand why. I will definitely give this massage a try and really prays that it will help thaaanks
This is the perfect video for my situation. It has been very aggravating to have gone to pt for a few months and my pain to mostly go away then for it to just to keep coming back. It makes sense that massaging the muscle is crucial because that was the part that seemed to help the most when I was in pt. I’ll give this a try and see how it goes, it’s just really nice to have you explain exactly what has happened to me it gives me hope. Thanks guys hopefully this works
Disregard this. My orthopedic originally thought it was a strain, but after a mri I am being told it is a stress reaction of coracoid process. This video can still be beneficial, also speak with orthopedic and possibly bring up stress reaction of coracoid process. It may save you a few unnecessary trip of different orthopedics
Just what I did the other night working out. Real sharp pain. I hate laying off my workouts. The massage and bands worked great for a shoulder strain also.
Great video, as always, gentlemen. I do have a question though: while doing triceps dips I get a sharp pain in my pecs right at the point where they connect to the sternum. Sometimes I power through it, sometimes it ruins my workout and can hurt for days. I cannot figure out how it happens or why. Any tips?
A lil late, but sounds like costochondritis. The reason youre feeling this pain is because maybe you are too hunched over when doing dips. I suggest trying out straight bar dips which may feel more natural to some compared to parallel bar dips. Also, try rolling out your lats and thoracic spine to allow for external rotation in your shoulders, which will help with posture
Thanks. When I pulled my calf your video helped. I thought my chest was healed but after finally doing my calisthenic routine after a week of healing I woke up to it feeling like I ripped it again I guess I need more time and shoulda been rubbing the muscle fibers

@@Johnny-bv4kg I honestly recommend switching completely to dumbbell press. Go with like 30s and take reps as slow as possible for 12-15 for 5 sets. Build the weight up on the dumbbell press and really strengthen your rear delts with other workouts. Through in push ups and eventually cable flys without to much of a stretch. Eventually you’ll be back in the game with minimal pain. Slow reps on everything chest. Personally I’ve completely thrown out a normal bench press. Thank you so much for this video. I did too much weight today. My pec is super tired in the evening. I hope for a successful rehab.
You guys are awesome , I'm starting to feel much better
I was having this excruciating pain and have no idea what to do until I come across this video
You guys are amazing..God bless you.
@@noname-lj7po What happened with you though?
Cheers for the advice and explanation! After 22 years of working out I got my 1st injury last Monday and I think I have straing or slightly torn my upper pec major during my 2nd to last set of benching. No swelling, no bruise and just some pain and discomfort. Fysio appointment could not be made earlier that Thursday but I read everywhere that quick action is required so with these exercises I can star already. No pushups etc. without the fysio's appoval but the stretching and massage will help.
Hi just strained my peck 6 days ago. Feeling some what better now. Just curious how are you doing and how long did it take you to heal?
@@cornpit77 thank you so much for that information.
These guys are great, funny too! Thank you Bob and Brad.
This is two separate strains in differs locations you guys have helped !
You two are great! Love your sense of humor and advice. Thank you, doctors!

Did you try? Did it help after that long time?
Much appreciated! I bench real heavy and two weeks ago felt both sides go. Hurts to bench but I still can. Obviously shouldn’t though until healed. Hopefully heals fast
What time frame did it end up healing for you?
How did you get on? I did the same but only on my left side. Its only been 3 weeks it getting better but not 100% yet and still swolen
@@craighundzinski2869 about two months.
@@stephena5752 Did you workout normally for 2 months or you took rest completely for two months?
This is perfect!!! I’ve been dealing with this pain for 6 months! It has improved over the last two months with general stretching, but it’s still a big problem. I am going to get started immediately!
How was it?
@@abu_alii did not help me. I went through several more months of physical therapy, stretching, exercises, oral medication, topical cream, MRI, then most recently a Cortizone injection. A little over a year with the pain.
The MRI showed I had an inflamed shoulder ACL. Everything else looked fine. There’s a lot going on in the shoulder joint. It can be hard to diagnose. I thought it was a Peck. Physical therapist thought it was a bicep tendon. turned out to be the ACL. They all tie in at pretty much the same spot.
@@MrSirDudeGuydid u recover ?

I'd avoid the same injury but I don't know how I did it, oh well.
Cheers
hell nah im not waiting for 7 weeks just to get back healthy

I'm a competitive bodybuilder and I've been having an on and off chest strain that's been plaguing me for 6 months. Im going to try these massage techniques and ill check back in in a few weeks with a progress update! Thank you for the tips!
@Squid Ly likewise here! Had a Chest strain about 4x these past 2 years. Had me restarting to bench pressing just the barbell each time.
Ive been track my Dumbbell press exercise to just see how my weights are progressing and they are going up qith not much pain at all. This is where I started and where im at currently.

Any advice?
@@athamas1294 I’ve got the same thing as you and it’s been plaguing me for about 6 months. Just do all the things in the video and do chest workouts but starting from almost no weight and over the weeks gradually increase the weight. Hopefully this works for you

when you do any activity like push ups and weight lifting ..you need to warm up and stretch your muscles first ..hope it will help

Try and physically warm it with a heating pad before stretching
Use boxing for warmup so every part of your body is activating

So helpful, thank you for the free information!
Great video. I had a tear and really havent done anything about it but always feels weird after the injury.
I will definitely give this massage a try and really prays that it will help thaaanks
any update bro?
i dont know .. you will reply or not you will help me or not ... but i have faith in god .. may god bless my mom..
Wow this worked. Thank you.
Nigel Bell did the massaging end up helping???
Hugo Wentzel slightly but not 100%
Disregard this. My orthopedic originally thought it was a strain, but after a mri I am being told it is a stress reaction of coracoid process. This video can still be beneficial, also speak with orthopedic and possibly bring up stress reaction of coracoid process. It may save you a few unnecessary trip of different orthopedics
This explains why my bench has been getting weaker and I felt such an intense stretch at the bottom
You guys are funny. I love your personality. You make perfect father in laws. I love the video

Any tips?
same!

How long does it take to heal?
When I first strained my chest, I took a week off and went right back into lifting. A week after that I injured my chest super setting chest flys and bench press. Don’t be like me at 22. Take that advice from me now….. 25 watching this video.
How many weeks or days we should stop the workout and how should we start the workout?
How much weight we should start with the chest workout?
Me, 30
I did the same exact shit I was benching 185 no pain after 2 weeks and then decided to try 225 got it for 2 but then I felt the soreness and it was back at square 1 can’t even do a push up without the pain. I’ve learned my lesson I’m going to take it slower
I also did physical therapy and got with chiropractors for a year but I really screwed myself going hard right after the strain
