I love your food preservation videos, Jessica. You always show that it isn't necessary to can 50 jars of something in a day, a few jars on the shelf is better than nothing and always useful.♥️

Indeed. That was one of the canning lessons that I needed most. Today I canned peppers, pear butter, pickles, green tomato slices. I think we are going to enjoy the variety of food too. My family is much smaller but we are well on our way to self sufficiency. Feels good.

What a great surprise to find a free plum tree fruiting! As always, thank you for another great video. A while back, you and Adam mentioned that a challenge first generation homesteaders face is not having knowledge passed down from previous generations. I’m thankful that, as a (future) first generation homesteader, I can learn from excellent teachers like you and get a few steps ahead.

The wild plums make good jelly and I've also made wine from them. Years ago, they were used in the shelterbelts to prevent wind erosion so they're plentiful here. We also have wild grapes, chokecherries, blueberries and buffalo berries. So fun to forage what grows wild.

The farm I grew up on (central Mississippi) had dozens of wild plum trees in the pasture. They were about the size of a nickel but the taste was out of this world. The commercial plums you buy in the store just aren't the same. We also had wild dewberries, apple trees, pears and figs. Loads of canning but in winter they were a great treat.

Jessica you have such a talent with everything you do. I have to commend you on your no frills video's. You get right to the point of whatever the video topic is. One thing that is so annoying are the homestead video's that have a 2-3 minute intro that you have to watch before you get to the topic.....only to have to wait another 15 minutes because the content creator decides to talk about a bunch of mumbo jumbo prior to the real reason people clicked on the video in the first place. So thank you for being real and teaching in one of the most professional ways I have encountered on you tube.

Wonderful video!! I sent your UA-cam short on bone broth to my daughter who has my 8 month old granddaughter. I picked some of the pears off that tree between the Pa turnpike and a township road last night. I’m sure I was a sight to behold with my picking pole basket and plastic shopping bag walking down the roadside !😂😂 There’s an apple tree too that I’m going to check tonight to gauge the ripeness of the apples. I hate to see any of the fruit go to waste although there’s always plenty of deer that enjoy the fruit as well. Your dogs were so precious in their interaction with each other!!❤️❤️And I tell my kids all of the time that the reason we had them was so we can embarrass them later in life!😂😂

I want to thank you whole heartedly for your videos and your challenge in August! We have a small, humble backyard garden, about 25ft by 10 ft and an apple tree and my mom has a peach tree and her best friend has a pear tree (of which I was allowed to pick all I wanted from their trees,). It seemed that I would harvest and then you would post a video of exactly what I have harvested! It was amazing! God put me where I needed to be for sure! Anyway, I was able to make 6 peach cobblers (froze 3 and gave 2 away and the family had one for dessert), peach salsa (which my husband and son LOVE), peach butter, peach jelly, pear butter, pear jelly, shredded zucchini that I froze, pickled cucumbers and pickled peppers! I’m in Idaho and our garden is still producing peppers, zucchini and tomatoes. We don’t have a freeze dryer, which I would love, but our garden doesn’t produce enough to warrant that expense, but one can dream! Anyway, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for helping me make the most out of our little garden!

Jessica, I love that you mentioned one of Adam's favorite food and made sure to make some. Most men want to do the heavy lifting and also have their wife (I am only speaking of male/female) manage the inside household). You both are doing what is needed to sustain your household and especially during the winter. I grew up in Michigan, and I know about those brutal winters.
After watching your pear video, I canned pears and made pear butter!!! So good 😋! This morning I made apple butter. I kinda got on a roll with the pears and kept going. I also canned peaches but forgot to do peach butter because my mind was on pears 🍐🍐🍐🤭! Thank you for the fruit butter tips.

IT is always nice getting a surprise tree that produces food! We also ended up with two of the wild plum trees that produced for the first time this year. We had bought two peach trees that sadly died off in year 3 but we left them out there. TO our surprise those two trees were plum stock that the peach branch had been grafted onto! I have two gallons of them in the freezer all deseeded and ready for making jam when things calm down here and a bag of seeds to cook to make some jelly! As usual love the no waste! Blessings!

I’m always watching gardening videos in late summer in awe of how beautiful and lush everyone’s gardens are this time of year. Here in North Texas our gardens are all burnt up or at least seriously struggling by now. It takes a superhuman effort to keep them going through 6-8 weeks of over 100 degrees every day and no rain. I can hardly imagine living somewhere that it’s possible to have such a lush summer garden!

I wish I had a plum tree in my yard. While I'm not a fan of plums, I'd dry them and make prune juice out of them or maybe just skip the juicing and eat the prunes themselves. I have to drink prune juice almost every day due to sluggish digestion so that would save me money. A bottle of prune juice is nearly $6 now!

The nice thing about using small jars is you can use any pot to water bath them in that allows for 1-2 inches of coverage over the tops. No need to heat up a gallon or more water in a regulation water bath canner. And small batches are easily handled in this manner.

I'm sure you are more of a gardening expert than I am, but I just take the seeds out of the tomatoes, wash the gel off of the seeds under the tap and then leave them on a paper towel to dry, and have no problem with them germinating when I plant them out.

We have american plums too! We thought they were dogwood as well and accidentally cut down a good bit of them. Thankfully there are still a bunch left. They like to grow by water.
They are a sour plum with lots of natural pectin. We made preserves with no added lemon juice or pectin, just taking it to the gelling point. Is the difference because you made yours a jelly and we did preserves? We followed the Ball recipe for sour plum preserves, but we cut them up in pieces for better texture and we took completely to gelling point and cooked for a minute even though recipe said to take just before gelling. It definitely firmed up. Hopefully not TOO much, lol. It taskted SO good. I think it the thing i am most excited to crack open this winter. I cant wait!

My Nana used to make wild plum jam. It was good. On the tart side, but good.

We found several American plum trees on our property too! I thought they were some sort of wild cherry tree because I never saw any fruit but the flowers smelled like cherries to me and the bark and leaves looked somewhat cherry like. Weve been enjoying the spring blossoms for about 3 years now. About a month ago I noticed birds hanging out near those trees and I love to see what kind of birds are hanging out on the property so I went over to investigate but found the plums instead! We made a jelly from them too.

So excited to see you use cherry tomatoes! I have a lot in my garden this year and wasn't sure how to use them up.

Jessica I use old medicine bottles to save my seeds. They use a small space and store easily.

I just love your videos! Just want to share that I have been tallying all my harvest thus year after you talked about it last season. It's fun to see how much each plant gives! Thank you for adding the comment of seed saving. I will be adding that now too 😊 Such a great way to know how much to plant too!

I especially enjoyed the little peek into your firewood prepping. We live in northeast Ohio, and spend many hours over the summer and early fall taking down dead trees or picking up those that have fallen and getting our firewood taken care of. We do have fuel oil furnaces, but we prefer the warmth of the wood stoves! We also heat the barn/workshop, and we have a small maple syrup operation that utilizes firewood as well. Doing the firewood a little at a time makes the job so much more pleasant. Blessings, Marie

I used Pomona's pectin for the first time yesterday. I loved it. So much easier than using the other. I really like the idea of less sugar.

Me too, poison ivy. Best cure for me is a drop of pure peppermint essential oil rubbed into blisters twice daily dries it up. Thank you for all you do Jessica.
