  • In this BlacktipH episode, Josh is targeting giant amberjacks with Justin from LakeForkGuy and JT from Hook and Arrow. We headed offshore to a deep shipwreck in 200+ft of water off the coast of Florida. As soon as we got to the wreck, we started marking fish. Once hooked, amberjacks will swim straight to the shipwreck and break you off. If the amberjacks don't break you off in the shipwreck, the next challenge is to avoid the sharks. There were many hungry bull sharks on this wreck! We hooked over 20 amberjacks and lost everyone either to the shipwreck or the sharks. We tried using live bait with heavy drag on a conventional reel, but we ran out of bait before we could land a fish. At the end of the day, Josh hooked up to a big Mahi and avoided the skunk.
    *BEFORE YOU TALK CRITICIZE, READ THIS*
    We are fishing a shipwreck in 230ft of water with a 4-6mph current. There are lots of sharks on this wreck that eat the amberjacks. Once we hook up to an amberjack, they immediately swim towards the shipwreck for safety (thus breaking our line). Giant bull sharks immediately start chasing the amberjack the moment you hook it. We have to fish very heavy drag to prevent the fish from swimming into the wreck. We have to retrieve line as fast as possible to prevent the sharks from eating the amberjack. This is a very challenging environment to land fish.

    Amber jacks are mind bogglingly powerful. I shot one with my spear gun once in Baja at 90 feet deep on the lip of a 300 foot deep underwater canyon. He headed straight down into the dark dragging me behind him like a kitten on a string. All I could do was hold onto my spear gun and add air to my BC. Finally stopped him, but then he headed back up toward the surface still dragging me behind. Rapid breathing saved my lungs and he finally lost his juice back up on the flat. He was 80 lbs and fed a lot of the local people. I wasn't sure for a while who was going to kill whom.

      Went jigging with a guide who lost his friend to this fish. He shot one & it started to circle around him, all happened too fast, tangling him in his own line & pulling him down to the bottom, gone.

      Especially when they never set their drag.. they just keep the drag super super tight and pull and reel pull and reel and wonder why they get snapped off at the start. You have to consistently loosen and tighten your drag to get the fish tired then reel. They don't it's all for views.

    We would go offshore fishing and I would always catch a HUGE amberjack while fishing for king fish here in Texas. My mates would get so mad because it would take almost an hour to get them up to the boat. Rarely do the survive and eating them is not popular. But, boy, they put up a huge fight and I would never go without a rod belt and 300# steel leader is a must. Thanks for sharing.

    this rod and reel broke not because of the fish size, it happened because this guy had no idea how to fish. someone who is a decent fisherman would of noticed after one break off that the gear and jigging strategy isn't working. you should use wooden reels not stella

    My conclusion ?
    Too fast, too nervous...
    Use braided lines instead of monofil, use proper hooks/treble, double Palomar knot is a must !
    Ultra-light tackle is good for.....bass :)))

      First of all don't comment on something when you don't know what your talking about. People who watch this these videos most likely know about fishing so when they read your comment they know your a hater. If you knew what you were talking about you would know that the hooks would rust and and even if they didn't they would still be able to eat.

    • @petesampson4273

      Edward Hoff
      Well, Ed. I have been fishing for longer than the combined age of the three guys in the video and I've learned quite a few things in that time. One of those things is that, if one breaks off three fish in a row, one is using inadequate tackle.
      Also, a bare hook is usually pretty easy for a fish to shrug off but, and I admit I didn't get a good look at exactly how they were rigging their jigs, a big chunk of plastic lodged in the throat will kill a fish long before a hook has a chance to rust through. Breaking off fish after fish while using an artificial lure strikes me as being just a bit irresponsible.

    • @XciTeChiKa
      @XciTeChiKa 8 років тому +5

      +pete sampson the plastic isn't breaking off its just the hook which is attached to a piece of nylon cable. So basically it's the hook and a piece of rope in the fishes mouth.

      +pete sampson I agree with you.The hook wil rust but it doesn't mean that it is going to break you get hooks that can last quite a long time before breaking due to rust.

    anyone who posted, "let off on the drag" HAS NEVER FISHED FOR AJ'S! Matter of fact, you have never fished, if you havnt lost lots of jigs before you brought a reef donkey boat side😉 they are the most powerful fish in the ocean and dive straight for the reef where they then break off any line you can throw at them. and I'm pretty sure the biggest aj is on the reef with a gold tooth selling everyone's speed jigs for 20bucks a pop.

    if you're going rip them up like that, use a heavier rod and line, no wonder you didn't land anything.

    • @troyjralph
      @troyjralph 8 років тому +9

      No it's because he has 400+ yds of line on that spool and he's trying to land the fish with 20 yds. His drag is far too tight which is causing him to pull hooks and pop knots. It's not the gear it's the operator. Go and watch the Kiwis land 60+ lb yellowtail kingfish (amberjacks) on 50lb tackle.

      FROM THE DESCRIPTION: "We are fishing a shipwreck in 230ft of water with a 4-6mph current.
