The only problem I have with Villeneuve's Dune was how minimalist it was with it's design, making it look like any other modern sci fi. When I envision the characters of Dune, I see a riot of color and ornate uniforms. The Sardaukar I particularly like to envision looking like the Prussian Totenkopf hussars.
Isn't minimalism (which ain't Villeneuve's design choice, but brutalism is, anyway) the _opposite_ of literally every sci-fi movie/video game nowadays? There's a reason why people are so critical of over-design, that being how literally every sci-fi story has to be a riot of machinery, extravagant colors and a shit ton of details on everything. Go watch Jupiter Descending, Valerian, Star Trek, hell even Thor Ragnarok & Guardians of the Galaxy to find out what I'm talking about. Modern sci-fi is anything but minimalist lol

Thanks. I read it every year since I was a child. I also wrote in the description below the video. The Sardaukars were my favorites in the books. that’s why i made this video about them.

Sardaukar are based on the Ottoman Janissaries, which were European slaves soldiers from rural parts of the Empire > trained from childhood and only loyal to the Sultan.
When I saw those Sardaukar descending like that, I knew it was over. How unbelievably terrifying. No one goes up against the Sardaukar and lives. NO ONE.
Denis certainly got this right, the Sardukar were fearsome, but past their peak; the Atreides were their match in battle and better led, only a traitor could turn the tide of this battle, and did.
This opinion never made any sense to me, have the Atreides troops ever faced the Sardaukar in open battle before Arrakis? I understand that the Sardaukar would have trouble with the Fremen, since they're constantly in conflict with anyone that controls the world, and the fact that you can't use shields while on sand on Arrakis, a world that's apparently 90% sand. But the Atreides have like nothing beyond good leadership and training going for them, doesn't feel like that should be enough to rival the Emperor's finest.
In the bit where the sardaukar are being anointed that idea originally came from the british empire in something like a forlorn hope where they would mark soldiers after giving them a tot of whiskey and a puff on a cigar then they would mark them it basically meant those soldiers would indeed die in combat
They are 100% Janissary/Ghulam inspired, maybe with a bit of Strelets. Professional, lifelong warriors, often drafted from young slaves, slowly becoming prisoners of their own reputation.
I think the introduction and depiction of the Sardaukar was excellent in the new adaptation. Only minor criticisms I have is that they could have been built up as the superior soldiers that they are supposed to be more in the movies, so that the audience understands how far above they are above everyone else in the setting. Which is why it has so much impact that the Fremen, who no one on the galactic stage thought of as a power, could not only face but also defeat them.
for those asking for the 4k version, the video was removed and the channel was suspended due to copyright. ( Next Gen Movies ). This shows that movie companies care is money.
I did like them, certainly a better depiction than the flowery ones in the dune mini-series, but the lack of guns, and they forgot all about why people don't use body shields and/or laser weapons on dune, having a angry train of teeth chase you would be scary but the feedback effect of a laser weapon on shields was always amusing to think about. They ended up bringing low tech stuff like artillery and projectile weapons, leit was also a bit of a shock, never knew a dad could change so much...
00:52 ... Why were the Atreides Army considered one of the best armies in the Imperium? They were wiped out in 10 seconds in the fight with the Sardaukars...I haven't read the books, hope I spelled that right.
There is a very strong theme in the books of the environment making the man. Atreides worked hard but lived on a nice planet. The sardaukars were intentionally raised on a hellish planet. The fremen even more so.
@@makerstudios5456 ... and in the past, Fremen used to live on Salusa Secundus for a while (home planet of the Sardaukar). You can say that Fremen and Sardukar are the same blood, related or at least mixed. It is interesting to consider which planet is harsher, Salusa Secundus or Arrakis. The lore says that Sardaukar started to enjoy luxuries and good things in life, became pampered and grew relatively soft.
@@cesaru3619 Haha, do you realise that Fremen won over Sardakaurs mainly because of their homeland adventage?? They were experts for fighting in desert.
@Miro Reverby You probably dont know how those visions work, do you? They are only a possibility. There are many possibilites how future may develop. And each time Paul sees only 1 possibility (that might not happen). For example the future where that black fremen became his friend and teacher. And how did it end? Paul had to fight him to death and kill him instead. No friendship, no teaching. Reality was different from vision.
@Miro Reverby Harkonnens got only 3 "platoons" of Sardaukars from Emperor. It is not big number. So mostly Harkonnen's men will get killed in part 2, where they assault Harkonnen's base.
To be honest I found the concept of the Sardauker alsways more fascinating than the Fremen - especially because with them I had always to control my disbelive that a bunch of cave-dwellers could beat men who were trained for battle permanently. I mean the Fremen are certainly tough, but to be honest - realisticly seen they should be much more focused on survival than hand-to-hand...
Thats Herbert's obsession with the noble savage idea and his personal theory that the harshest environments make the best fighters. Its like expecting inuits to be the best fighters in the world because they live in the toughest environment. Granted, the fremens were also a warrior culture and warred with each others quitw often BUT The sardaukars are basically the product of constant war training and are the survivor of an extremely harsh selection where not even 1 in 10 made it alive, they could sustain it because they constantly got fresh recruits from off world and didnt meed to form a self sustaining society since everything including their weapons and armor were provided by the emperor. On the other hand the fremens couldnt afford to fight 24/7 they actually needed smiths, engineers etc
@@louisazraels7072 agreed. Problem with action movies is that they often fail to communicate the ability and skill of an individual fighter and religate them to cannon fodder, best action scenes is where all participants put up a fight where a fight can go either way, else your relegated to Return of the King gondorian soldiers in skill where theyre on screen to die. Hopefully, theyre shown to be tough still, but the point is that the freeman are no slouches to fighting, theyre on par or better/worse than sarduaker soldiers with a point of tolerance either way, 6 freeman took out like 20 sardauker alone in part 1 before dying, what could thousands of them be like....

Btw they were already brutallised by the herkonnens for 80 years and the fremen fighter couldn't drive them away. It's just a story written and now being made a movie.
When they fought the Freman, the women threw their babies unto the swords of the Sardaukar so that their blades would be too burdened to defend from the killing stroke. The Freman said of the Dread Imperial Troops: they fight pretty good.
I actually really hated that line from the Fremen. "Yeah we jumped em, stabbed em in the back, and they still took a few of us with em. Fun fight." As to fighting in the Sieches, I get the whole point was that the Fremen basically sacrificed themselves so that they could bring down a Sardaukar, but it feels really bad for them to get all this epic hype and no good pay off.

The Fremen are just. Noone is truly good. And Darth Vader loses every fight he is in. He let's QGJ die to Maul, get's corrupted, gets his behind handed to him by Obi-Wan, get's beaten by Luke. Get's cheated by Dr Aphra and non-cannonically would not be able to beat Starkiller. And noone who ever took orders from others is really awesome. Make your own way. Always.
You can like the bad guys in fictional works though? It is not like they commited real crimes against real humans. Sauron is one hell of a terrifing guy. He collapsed an entire human empire through subversion alone. He tricked all living races into taking the Rings of Power through which he almost enslaved them. While his old boss was a god that simply used corruption and brute force, he made up for his lack of power through careful planning and not being to low for any kind of trickery. In the movie we mostly see him as a leader of armies but that was only after he weakened his opponents enough that his victory should have been overwhelming. And it would have been were it not for the smallest of people ready to carry the heaviest burden. Darth Vader is menance. He is completly unstoppable in almost every scene he is in. Not even Luke "the chosen one" beat him and in the end he was the one to undoe his own corruption and sacrifice himself to kill the Imperator.
I mean by that logic it's difficult to like the Fremen since they commit some 60 billion counts of trolling during Paul's Jihad. Also villains looking and seeming cooler is a common trope in fiction

Sardaukar comes from a prison planet with harsh environement, the whole galaxy dumps their worst criminals on it. Those who stay alive long enough are offered to become sardaukars and fight for the emperor, they are also heavily endoctrinated. A squad of 10 sardaukars is considered to be equal to 100ish other soldiers. They are one of the three pillars of the power of the emperor.
And for the record, even Sardaukars shit themselves when they fight fremen.
In the books they had to run from fremen who stayed in the shelters, the children and the eldery. And they barely escaped.

Dune Finally Got the Perfect Director, he even makes them take the time to wipe the blood from there weapons after each fight,
The only problem I have with Villeneuve's Dune was how minimalist it was with it's design, making it look like any other modern sci fi.
"over design" I guess that is an euphemism for "armor porn" or "ship porn" .?

Sardaukar are based on the Ottoman Janissaries, which were European slaves soldiers from rural parts of the Empire > trained from childhood and only loyal to the Sultan.

@@johnkonig865ducan idaho faced them i think.

I like that they are always expected to have their blade drawn and ready so there is no need for a sheath

Wait until they fight the space Arabs. Shit about to get 🔥

They used laserweapons on the flyer and later on. Would have been funny if they hit it, destroying the whole base.

00:52 ... Why were the Atreides Army considered one of the best armies in the Imperium? They were wiped out in 10 seconds in the fight with the Sardaukars...I haven't read the books, hope I spelled that right.
They were among the best, but Sardukar are far better than them. The Sardukar are only rivaled by the Fremen.
There is a very strong theme in the books of the environment making the man. Atreides worked hard but lived on a nice planet. The sardaukars were intentionally raised on a hellish planet. The fremen even more so.
The Atreides were the best of the House armies. The Imperial force was, by design and necessity, a whole different class.
@@makerstudios5456 ... and in the past, Fremen used to live on Salusa Secundus for a while (home planet of the Sardaukar).
So mostly Harkonnen's men will get killed in part 2, where they assault Harkonnen's base.
imagine what could 300 spartans do with these guys.
Granted, the fremens were also a warrior culture and warred with each others quitw often
BUT
The sardaukars are basically the product of constant war training and are the survivor of an extremely harsh selection where not even 1 in 10 made it alive, they could sustain it because they constantly got fresh recruits from off world and didnt meed to form a self sustaining society since everything including their weapons and armor were provided by the emperor.
On the other hand the fremens couldnt afford to fight 24/7 they actually needed smiths, engineers etc
@@louisazraels7072 agreed. The whole concept of "hard times produce strong men" and the like, is pretty constantly debunked whenever US (or sometimes historically Soviet) soldiers are deployed to fight zealots in the middle east. Every time the supposedly pampered and weak professional soldiers will kill dozens or hundreds of supposedly hardened and unbeatable warriors for every man they lose.
For me the Sardaukar were the most interesting part of the first book. All murderers and high criminals, they’re given a chance to be born again in the emperors grace.
I liked how in the movie, their leader was drenched in the same effect only reserved for those using voice powers up to that point…they didn’t cause Paul nearly enough trouble in the books.

hope in next film dont let the Sardaukar like the tipycal incompetent bad guys that only be in film to die and make the "heroes" overpowered
Notice the lack of sheaths, that is deliberate.

Btw they were already brutallised by the herkonnens for 80 years and the fremen fighter couldn't drive them away. It's just a story written and now being made a movie.
And then the Fremen become Paul's attack dogs, brutalizing the Known Universe, just as they were brutalized
@@weldonwin , yes kind of like politics today.

И после, когда Пол встречает Гурни Халлека, бой с группой сардаукаров (на стороне которых была внезапность, кстати), имел именно такое соотношение, один к двум-трем.

Why would anyone like the Sardaukar? That's like favoring Darth Vader or the Lannisters.
Good old Sauron. What a guy!
Darth Vader is awesome, also the Fremen aren't good either, that's kind of the point of the series. Replacing one bloodthirsty army and empire with another.
They also look cool.
Always.
There are no good guys in the Dune universe, just varying flavors of bad.
