4:17 This moment, and the conversation before this moment, was a great character growth for Ishaan's father, as he finally realized and grew out of his narrow mindset of children's mindsets. People might say, "Why didn't the father hug Ishaan/meet up with him, and just walk away?" That is because he was too ashamed of himself to face his own son. He thought his son was incorrigible and could only be fixed with force, but Ram showed him that a caring teaching method would work wonders.
All in all, a great scene was written into the script and executed in a great manner by Vipin Sharma.

One of the reasons Indian movies are a bit longer is because, as you said, these movies are often a slow burn. Also the modern Indian movie industry retains much closer roots to Indian theatre than modern Hollywood has to Western theatre, where plays are often 3 hours or longer, and often require and encourage audience feedback. The whole point of this slow burn IS to make you uncomfortable and take you out of your comfort zone. It's specifically meant to put you in Ishaan's shoes and feel his pain on a very visceral level. This movie hits on a lot of different themes that were expanded upon in more mature ways in 3 Idiots, which focuses on the college rat race. Toxic masculinity, systemic problems with special needs education, neurodiversity...there's SO much to unpack in this movie.

The last scene of Ishan running up to Nikunmbh and him picking Ishaan up and pushing him as high in the air as possible has a meaning to it which states what a teacher-student relationship should be like. A teacher should be able to catapult a student as high as possible in terms of development and success through proper guidance, love, and care.

I love that Ram arranged this art competition knowing that Ishaan will likely win. Ishaan had always seen others, especially his brother, excel and win at everything (we saw he was always first in class and went to the tennis finals). Ishaan never got recognition and this was a way for him to get that. I believe when he woke up before everyone else and didn’t show up until later, he was likely nervous as he has stopped painting because of everything he was going through. He also seems to have social anxiety at this time, and there would be a lot of people there.

The story demands actors and actors should restrict themselves as per the story demands. In this movie, if Amir Khan really wants to show his heroism, it would've spoiled the film. He just did what it required. Perfect meter.
Let's imagine If this movie is gonna be remade in Tollywood or Kollywood..
There will be one intro fight and song for hero....then a love story and one duet....a hardcore mass fight with co teachers in pre climax to convince them to participate in painting competition.

I feel Steph has problem with being patient and sitting through difficult moments in movies. The 2nd half of the movie lands because of the path it took in1st half. I felt the same thing in Jab We Meet reactions. Sometimes we need more scenes to understand all the dynamics and relate with the characters better. It's not always about understanding the plot quickly , we need to go through the motion too. Maybe next time, take a breather and remember it's a story and there is a possible sweeter payout at the end.
Also, this movie is not trying to paint the parents as monsters. If you remember the when Ishaan skips school, the audience is shown the reality of the world Ishaan lives in. It's a rat race, and not everyone has the luxury of time. And the parents don't want their kids to be at any disadvantage in it. So they are justified for demanding their kids to do well in studies. The movie is a plea to the parents to not get sucked into this too much and loose sight of what's really important.
We should count ourselves fortunate if we find our calling.
