Come back for new videos most Wednesdays.
I work at a theater myself and I think gimmicks are fun. We don't get them very often however. But we do get promotional materials and one time my boss dressed up as the fairy godmother. I like anything different that comes by work. I mean we have a standard script of customer interaction but I love to break things up by handing someone a poster, or pin to go along with the movie ticket. I think it's the customer interaction that keeps me working there.
That being said if we had shocking seats or a hokey nurse I'd be involved with it. I'm the only one out o the bunch that can stay in character or install shit well enough for it to actually work. Been there for 3 years, 21 years old, and I work with a bunch of 16 year olds.
Haha same here. I love that kind of stuff, people make fun of me for buying the cool popcorn tubs, or buying the extra promotional stuff. Movies are about having fun! I wish studios did more crazy gimmicks.
Too bad.
At least there a cool people like you out there trying to keep the fun alive! If I could go to your theater I absolutely would!
Who you think is gonna read that lol
I totally wish shock-seats were still around. A few per theater to incite chain reactions of screams would be epic. Especially on a randomizing system.
Joy buzzers for your butt.
@@christelheadington1136 They'd get shat on by the most cowardly.
There are a lot of extreme haunted houses that do that kind of thing. Look into The 17th Door in Fullerton, California if you wanna see how they put it to use as part of "Shock Therapy" and "Experimentation Seats". Conversely, even Disneyland and Universal Studios have employed light shocks on attractions over the years.
You did not mention one of the earliest gimmicks. Air conditioning, where they would pump air over blocks of ice to cool the theador.
All of these gimmicks suffer from being tied to really bad movies. They are just more artistic tools but aren't use well often. We need more stuff like Cave of Forgotten Dreams where Herzog used 3D to explore cave paintings- it makes sense to use, it showcases a special feature inherent to the content (sense of space), and helps evoke the feelings of the atmosphere of the place.
The Dark Knight's viral marketing campaign was probably one of the best that's ever been done. I was deep into all of the stuff happening online but unfortunately I lived in the middle of nowhere in Kansas so none of the real-life events like the bakeries were anywhere near me. I did win tickets to an advanced screening though.
There needs to be a thing to were you get to different foods at different parts of a movie. Or not, I'm just hungry
Baconisfun1 that would actually be a lot of fun for a murder mystery dinner party type movie. You eat what the group in the movie are eating and the fourth wall just doesn’t exist.
Verisimili-food
We have that in Dubai
I like 3D, but usually not enough to pay an extra 5-10 bucks for the upgrade. I'd rather spend that on extra popcorn.
As for most of the other gimics, they don't really hurt me, and I often enjoy hearing about them.
This video is actually a lot more interesting than I was expecting
Chad: Of course I have the guts *sits in chair*
Everyone: *gasping and cheering*
Chad: *turns inside out and explodes*
damn wish they still had those chairs
It's so wonderful to see the actual videos from these old 50s movies. Totally takes you to a different time
I avoid 3d at all costs. The glasses are uncomfortable, it causes headaches and most movies don't use it to its full potential.
to be honest I'd love to see the voting for the ending thing to be put into good use
[insert joke about a "film" that did this, released in November 2016]
@Christoffer113 What are you referencing?
@Christoffer113 Thanks. Which one were you speaking of when you mentioned 14 (now 16) years?
Dude, you deserve more wiews. Love the videos, keep doing what you do.
+Amund jølle I agree
I'm glad I came across this channel, thanks for the entertainment homestead
A professional and concise documentary with tons of videos, photos and info squeezed into the short running time. I really enjoyed it.
remarkable research in this video, great job!
Some Movie Theaters near me have dipped into the Food Perk game, by either giving the option to season your popcorn to your preference or Being a full-on Pub with a menu and booze for the adults to get through a bad movie. One in particular called Cinabarre actually also themes their Dishes around movies. They literally call their Potato Skins "Body Snatchers" and their Cinnamon Rolls " Princess Leia." But if you want a more Family Friendly Movie Pub Oregon has that too and it's called 'Northern Lights.' And they play movies up until DVD Release. You can still see Vice there it is insane.
The best 3d I've ever experienced, is popping a 3d bluray into my playstation and watching on the PSVR. The effects are MUCH better than glasses in a theater.
This is why I love movies so much.
how on earth do you not have millions of subcribers? keep at it man, because you're videos are brilliant
I love William Castle's silly gimmicks! It would have been so fun to be in the theaters in those shows!
title at 1:06 - A wartime high in 1972? That should probably be 1942 or something else that's earlier than the next date mentioned (1954) and around the time of the change in the industry being discussed.
To mention the Movie about the boardgame Clue form 1985, where they would send one of three Endings to a Cinema and the Audience had to go three Times to see all possible endings
One of my favourite movie gimmicks of all time was EMERGO used by William Castle in his 1958 film The House On Haunted Hill in which He Dangled an Inflatable plastic skeleton over the heads of his audience
William Castle was a cheesey genius! It must have been so much fun to go to movies back then. J.
0:30 Yes, because seeing how the theater is doing on it's busiest day of the year is a good way to know how they are doing on an average day.
You know, I teach film and film history and for such a short video, you did a remarkable job. You obviously did a lot of research and were able to succinctly articulate yourself to get a lot of valuable info into a short package. Well done!
The only gimmick that works is IMAX.
I am doing a master's project about Movie Theatres and this is fabulous! Thank you for doing the due diligence and providing the sources. I will subscribe! :)
+Katie Marshall thanks and good luck!
We watched the jazz singer at school a couple of weeks ago!
An interresting movie gimmick I found out about is from the movie Clue. This movie was created with different endings and when they first came to cinemas, of course every Cinema always had a different ending. So on one hand it would be harder to get spoiled, but on the other you had to go to 3 different cinemas to see all the endings.
That ghost glasses thing is kind of cool tbh. I could see a really good movie coming out of that idea.
You do fantastic work man. You remind me of my friend John Razimus.
tnx Rob!
Free entry into a cinema is a pretty cool gimmick.
I've only ever had one really impressive 3D experience - & that was not in a movie theater. It was at Universal Studios, in their Terminator 3D show (or whatever it was called.) When the master machine (which had tentacles!) reached out into the audience, that tentacle reached right over the seats in front of mine & got right in my face! I actually reared back in surprise - awesome! But for the most part, 3D is just a gimmick. I've never been impressed by any use of it in an otherwise normal movie. I suppose it could help tell a story if used correctly, but so far it's remained a just a gimmick; albeit a strangely persistent one. Maybe they could make a movie where, when it gets to a certain part, you'd be instructed to don your glasses, but most parts of most movies just aren't built for 3D. Unlike sound, color, surround sound & wide screen (which have all become standard), 3D seems destined to remain a 'trick.' It'll probable stay that way until true virtual reality becomes a thing - then some form of 3D might find a true home. tavi.
Nice dude!! :)
I went to see The Tingler in a cinema actually. The only word I would use to describe it would be silly.
Another solid video, thanks for the entertainment!
As far as gimmicks go... I really want 3D to end, it doesn't do anything for me, it's just like watching a film with sun glasses on, except if you take them off everything is blurry! I saw Civil War today and it was an awesome movie, but I was really getting sick of the 3D glasses after the first hour or so, especially since I usually wear normal glasses at the theater. One pair of eyewear is too much, two is just ridiculous lol... I really thought the 3D trend would have died out by now, but nope!
I feel like VR is eventually going to be a big gimmick at theaters, though maybe not for a long time since it'd be really damn expensive to implement just yet. One current gimmick you didn't mention in this video are moving chairs, which sound a lot less exciting than chairs that shock random people heh heh, they should bring that one back.
There was also a pretty weird gimmick campaign for "AI"....
I hate 3D and hope it will go back from whence it came. It's not only a gimmick that can take away from storytelling but it's also bad for those who wear glasses. But I love your videos! Keep up the good work!
I can only use one eye at a time, so 3D ends up doing nothing for me. It will occasionally work a bit sometimes, but it usually just gives me a headache.
***** Just wondering...do you wear glasses? I'm also not sold on how expensive it is, but mostly I've heard from others who wear glasses who say it's not worth it. I'm always eager to expand my sample size, however!
***** Good to know!
+ShiroKazu especially considering the only reason 24FPS was used is so the movie studios could cheap out on the amount of film used... Not really an issue on modern digital systems.
Ewan Marshall No, it's played at 24fps because at any other speed it becomes a little wierd. Any faster it becomes hard or too fast to watch, any lower and it feels too slow.
The Tingler also featured a single color scene.
Aren't there a few theaters in California that use the gimmick 4D? They add smell to the theater and if it snows in the movie they actually have artificial snow falling from the ceiling
I can't tell you how much I *LOVE* Castle's ridiculous horror gimmicks. I'm a huge geek for horror shit like that.
7:33
FEWER AND FEWER PEOPLE ARRRGHHHHH
the fewer vs. less distinction is mostly arbitrary nonsense that old white men randomly declared should be true for no good reason other than the fact that they personally liked it.
If you look into the history of less and fewer, both have more or less used in the same way as they are used now ("less and less people", "10 items or less", etc) ever since they first entered the language.
The bottom line is this: There is NO objectively valid reason to follow the less/fewer rule. The only reason to do so is to put on a superficial show of being well educated, and that is far from an universally desirable situation.
Nice video however Bwana Devil from 1952 was in color and used polarized light (not red/blue glasses) when shown in theaters.
Cinerama was also used in the
early days of film.
interesting. I enjoyed your video. you didn't mention IMAX though I'd have been interested in it.
You have the best shirts. Where do you shop?
Hi there, it's not pronounced "mah-kah-bruh" it is "mah-cob".
ugh.
You parked your _what_ in the Harvard yard?
So the "re" is silent?
@@b__c7538 joking aside, it's more like "swallowed" than silent. The OED pronunciation guide follows the "br" with a schwa inside of parentheses. The word has a French origin, where the dropping or "dropping off" of final sounds in words is common, even standard
Marcilla Smith What jokes? Genuinely want to know.
My God why don't they have this shit now?
The old horror gimmicks sound fun
I still have my Odorama card, it stinks!
It stinks and I love it!
I dream in Techno-color.
The IMAX gimmick is just amazing!! I love it.
It's similar to widescreen actually but modern
+Dylan Dubeau Gravity and Interstellar were so great in IMAX too
Oh golly gosh, if it's a big hit than it must be a great picture!!!
Our local Regal cinema has reclining seats and footrests.
VR theaters would be neat
I hate sounding old fashion. But i do kinda miss the times where you went to the movies and you weren't handed a pair of glasses for the 3D and a pair of wings when they drop the floor below you for the "immersive" experience
Don't get me wrong i like 3D as much as the next person but at the same time i've never walked out of a movie talking to my mates about how awesome the 3D effects were, it was more a conversation about the movie itself.
Or maybe i am just old fashioned.
Great Video Dylan keep up the good work!
Yeah you must be really old since 3D has been around since the 30s.
No my bad the 20s
Good point tho i believe that 3D has become more popular in the recent 10-15 years
That shirt is sick as fuck, I want one
I was born in 1959, and felt I missed out on a lot of these.
my favorite is seats that turn into a bed
That Batman gimmick reminded me of the Cloverfield ARG
The first pokemon movie gave out special edition cards. I wish I still had mine.
You forgot the blair witch gimmicks website and the found footage craze.
If Supreme Court ruled that movie productions and distributions should be separated, then is it really a good idea to allow game publishers distribute the games their own studios make?
gee. the 1950s sure was a decade that happened.
Good stuff. BUT....the "ghost viewers" provided to audiences for 13 Ghosts did NOT allow the film to be seen in 3D. It was not a 3D movie in any way. I'm surprised this mistake keeps cropping up.
i have depth perception problems as part of my Asperger syndrome so even though i have been trying to watch 3d films since the 1970's have never been successful somewhat like the blue dress/gold dress last year.
Funny....what these B-movie filmmakers tried to do in the 1950's and 60's,but were often hampered by their low budgets, they're now doing in theme parks today. And yet amazingly, neither Disney nor Universal have created an attraction that explores the world of gimmicky B-movies at their movie-themed parks.
I have a great idea for a movie gimmick:
Films that people actually want to see . . . What do ya' think?
Cooler than today
this guy looks like a less angry, less gruff, less Jersey michael jones
It is just amazing that-- with ALL the scientific Genius floating around at the turn of the 20th Century; that it took, what-- nearly 3 decades to produce synchronized sound and technicolor, WTF, just how dull was the ' light bulb' in the minds of those men of science? LOL...
3D is awesome but its not for every movie out there. Like for real who really wanted a 3D jem and the holograms movie
It's not really a gimmick, but theatre organ
So cool!
This will go well with hazing the betamales 😂
nice video! +1 like
That is a pretty risky move. If you have thousands of people coming to see your film, it becomes more and more likely that someone will die while watching the movie, even if that death has nothing to do with the film itself.
I guess they considered it gambling a thousand bucks on a great ad campaign haha
Castle looks uncomfortably similar to Nick Moran.
How many doe the current 3D work for. I’m always disappointed when I have to pay extra and it never works. I have yet to see a third dimension in the current 3D.
Just does not work for me.
3D movies are annoying if you also wear glasses.
Why not just use metal wire that the army used for audio in sync with the picture most easy way to go about it. Just normal wire with cuts in it that work the same way a record dose today. Are computer based sound by mixing 3 audio points into one sound witch was done by women moving 3 keys up and done in perfect order.
RIP William Castle.
Today's movies are pretty dull to the movies that he released I find especially with horror. I would have loved to see what he would do with today's technology.
I love ARGs too that link audiences to the movie's lore.
like the wet fart in shrek 4d
I hate 3D becasue of many reasons. A few are that I can see over the glasses, the whole wearing weird glasses thing is annoying and the 3D is just throwing thinga in your face which makes me a little over stimulated.
It's also extremely uncomfortable and rarely fits if you already wear glasses
imo
good vid.
imo
I just want them to pay more attention to the story/script/acting/etc than to the fucking fx and marketing shit,
spy kids 4d
first
I'd be more impressed by 3d now if movies were actually shot in 3d and not just edited to look like it in post.
I want to pass gas at an Odorama film. I want to see people take big whiffs of my farts and exclaim, "Wow this technology is AMAZING!"
This was very well researched but you made the same mistake everybody makes. While the Jazz singer has partially synchronized it was still a silent film. The first truly sound film was The Lights of New York in 1928
