WOW! Thank you Dr. Matthew. I could only find the Aleksandrović Prokupac 2020 in my neck of the woods I'm tasting it now and I've got to say that hot dayumn this is good. It's a bit like a great German Spätburgunder but with more spices and more cherries almost hinting at Italian reds that I'm more familiar with. It's doing great in the Zalto Burgundy glass by the way.
@@drmatthewhorkey Of all of the wine youtube people that I subscribe to, yours is the closest to my palette when it comes to red wines and I'm thankful for that, prokupac has been an eye opener and I will be enjoying this kind of wine till my demise. Cheers!
Very interesting and geeky video. Even here in Hungary, which is next door to Serbia I haven't seen them anywhere, yet. As far as unusual varietals go, Central & Eastern Europe is a good place to find these types of wines. For reds I enjoy Blaufrankish/Kekfrankos and Kadarka. For whites Furmint, Olazrizling/Grasevina, Juhfark, Harslevelu, Cserszegi Fuszeres, Ezerjo, Scheurebe, Sylvaner, etc. I had better stop here. 🤣 Too many wines to drink and taste. I hope to try Prokupac some time soon. The floral aspect sounds lovely, as do the variety of styles made. Cheers!
@@drmatthewhorkey You can find international wines from other European "main wine countries" (Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, etc.) As well as Aussie, Kiwi, South African, American, etc. But yes, not some much from immediate neighbors, go figure.
I should have clarified, the capital cities yes you can find the usual suspects. However, it's still very difficult to find wines from neighboring countries
Hahahaha your wine bottle overweight story....Some years ago I had exactly the same experience leaving North-Macedonia. Overweight, they weighed the suitcase first without the 4 bottles and was ticketed. Afterwards, the bottles were allowed back in and the suitcase went on the belt. Very Balkans and great that I could keep my North-Macedonian wines.
Have you tried 'The Oddball' Saperavi by Hugh Hamilton from McLaren Vale? Probably my second time trying this varietal, the first being a Georgian one, and was absolutely blown away!!
I enjoy your channel and like that you go to less common grapes and regions. A bit of feedback tho: would be useful, imo, to do a deep dive on a grape/region like this, before doing a tasting like this. Good stuff nonetheless
@@drmatthewhorkeyI mean a real deep dive. Like a video that goes in depth on the region/grape- history, terroir, various winemaking approaches- largely agnostic of specific bottles. Then after, a tasting vid. But just one guy’s opinion. Take it however you will
Love that you did these wines! I was lucky enough to try Prokupac twice. The first time was because the lady who runs one of my favorite local wine shops has family from both Croatia and Serbia so she recommended neat wines to me to try from there. The second Prokupac I got to try was one of the same bottles as yours, even the year! I got to have the Aleksandrovic Prokupac while I was on a SE European wine river cruise going down the Danube! Serbia was my favorite of the wine countries we visited, so many good wines!
I really appreciate these videos on lesser known regions and grapes. Now I only need to make the effort to search out some bottles. Still haven't had Grk, for example. I made a note on how I have to try some after watching one of your videos last year. And now Prokupac goes on the list as well.
Great video, some really good stuff coming out of the Balkan's these days! Clicked onto this whilst drinking the more recent 2020 vintage Doja Prokupac and I have to say, its drinking better than any other vintage I've had from them!
Budimir lila is available in Sweden for ~18$:) will be fun to try! I also found a merlot based wine from the same producer called “I Kao Da Si Andjeo”. 80% Merlot 20% prokupac, 2016 for ~15$. Anything you have tried or know something about?
Thank you Matthew!I like Prokupac, as to me, it"s cheaper way to enjoy good Pinot Noir.Thx to you Bob P. M.Old, JCB and few others for teaching us about wine and how to enjoy it.
You should do more of these deep dives into lesser known monocepages wines. Even though as you said they won't create a lot of viewings from the onset, I'm sure they will over time. So my first suggestions are Macedonian Vranec and Greek Assyrtiko.
There are TONS of older videos on the channel about unique wine grapes... literally HUNDREDS. Go to main channel page then click on playlist and check out by country
quick question. heading to priorat (spain)first week of may . can we just show up to the wineries there and do a tasting or do we need to go thru tour companies ? we realize every country has different rules.
sorry joe i'm from spain, that depend on the bodega if they have bar in the bodega you can go and do testing but normally you have to make a apointment 6 ppl minimum for a tour in the bodega include cata of wines and some food apart for the visit to the vineyard and history of the bodega etc.... so first check which bodega you want to go and contact them
Definitely not familiar with this grape, or if I've had it then it was many, many years ago. Off topic, I opened a 2016 Praja Monica de Sardegna DOC last night. I'm currently reviewing for the Advanced Theory exam later this month and just went through Italy. Until I pulled that bottle I didn't realize what that wine actually was. It was a bit tired, but still drinkable with pizza. I'd love to try more Serbian wines. It would be cool if this was on my Theory exam, though Serbia isn't on the Court's syllabus. :(

Funny how in Europe, the wines of neighboring countries are often nowhere to be found…

Niceee, what wines did you take with you?
Have you tried 'The Oddball' Saperavi by Hugh Hamilton from McLaren Vale? Probably my second time trying this varietal, the first being a Georgian one, and was absolutely blown away!!
Tried plenty of Saperavi but not that one from down under!
I just ordered a couple of 2013 Prokupac boje Lila as they are available here at SEK 200, which would be about about $19. Excited to taste 🤞
What a price for that wine!!!
Thank you Mathew for such a nice promotion of PROKUPAC and for the kind words about Serbia. Greeting from Belgrade. 🍷🍷🍷
Zdravo i hvala!

There are a few to be found in the USA!
I’ve never had. Seems like great wine!!! Great job with this vid!
Thank you!
Wow, really interesting episode. Not much of it in my neck of the woods but it is possible to land some. It's now on the radar. Cheers 🍷
You will like the grape!

I like it, for $15 worth a try
I love Nebbiolo for reds and Sauvignon Blanc for whites
🫡👏🏼👏🏼
I love your enthousiasm in all your video's. I recently ordered the Alexandrovic and waiting for them to show up ;)
Niccceee!! I am sure you will like it.
Thx for the video. Sound Fantastic this grape i hope to find some bottle here.
I hope you do find some! It's a wonderful grape
Wonderful! Wish there were some out there to buy.
What market are you in? Some can be had on webshops in Europe and there are a few available in the USA
Lots of obscure wine regions in the world that are great values ! I recall a superb Merlot from Hungary for $1.99/ bottle back in the 80's !
Wowwwzzass what a price! Hungary is still doing fabulous Merlot, although not quite at that price point hahaha
Thank you. Time for me to explore.
Indeed! Such wonderful wines out there in all corners of the globe
You got me here! Never heard of this one! 😮
Always something new to learn in wine!

In Priorat you often should contact ahead of time for a better experience.

Monica can be a delicious red wine grape. Good luck as you further your CMS studies
What to eat with prokupac?
Stewed meat, duck, or even chicken!
@drmatthewhorkey thanks
novack djokovic drinks this wine ! lol!
He probably does amongst other good stuff hahaha
