Your tomatoes are looking fantastic, and I agree, those black tomatoes are stunning looking. All my tomatoes are outside, and I can't see them ripening before the weather really turns, it's been a rubbish year weather wise, fighting snail and slug damage all 'summer' because of the non-stop rain, and it being my third year gardening, I completely took last year's heat wave for granted and anticipated the same harvest. I threw away 30 beef steak toms last year before my first harvest began (finally realised inconsistent watering was the culprit), yet I managed to harvest enough to have a year's worth of dehydrated tomatos. I have more tomato plants this year, good amount of fruits and flowers on the plant, but taking forever to ripen and many never will. Very different year.
Our cabbages get like that when we have too much rain….which happens most years, and we just keep planting cabbages every few weeks in case the rain is not as bad for that period of time.
That was a fantastic tomato harvest, it's always great to see the different colours in the harvest basket isn't it. I am the same with cabbages too, I might get one really good tight one and then five slug homes. There will always be next year for your plot, you do what is making you smile, that's the point of a garden and the polytunnel is coming on great. Take care 😊
Hello JB, good decision to focus on the polytunnel (in my opinion). You will need it completed by autumn in order to get things going for next year. Your plots are still producing some nice veg so don't be too hard on yourself. As for your tomatoes, 🎉, well done, they look great. At the end of the day, you have to prioritise otherwise you put too much pressure on yourself. I remember Steve saying make a task list before you go to the allotment and tick off the jobs as you complete them. It is so easy to get distracted and divert your attention onto something else. I always carry a notebook and pen with me so that I can make a note of other jobs that I identify whilst concentrating on my task list. I then reprioritise. You are doing great, keep up the good work and thank you for sharing this with us. Paul
Haha JB ™! It sure looks like a jungle in that chili greenhouse, but it is looking really nice! "Some stuff here betting eaten by pigeons, fantastic!" 😂Those tomato plants look amazing! So many cool and funky looking varieties 😍As you know, tomatoes are "my carrots". Wish I could grow at least one plant some year that looks like yours. But there's always next year! 🤪Nice looking harvest, beside the nasty looking cabbage of course hehe.

🍅 What an incredible Tomato harvest! 😍 You reminded me at 5minutes to midnight that I had left a tub of cherry Tomatoes that I’d harvested earlier outside by the Greenhouse! D’oh 🤦♂️ So thanks for that 😆 While I’m in for a good 🌶️ and 🫑 year this year, my 🍅 season is not good. The compost is far too strong and the plants are truly *awful* specimens. In fact I’m going to start terminating some of them in the GH, they’re simply that bad. I’ll get some of the 🌶️ plants in pots up off the floor in their place. Tempted to try some of your exotic looking examples. It’s the cherry plants that are providing me with a crop this year, as my second sowing of the bush plants was done later and I was able to rescue them into the Sylvagrow when they were really young - at the fresh new true leave stage - and they have really highlighted the problem I’ve been having with my main crop Tomato plants. Live and learn, have another go next year. Still really p!ssed at the situation but glad I have finally recognised and resolved it.
Yes cherries are definitely the most forgiving of the tomatoes! I regret not doing a few more this year but there's always next year :) glad to hear the peppers are doing well!
You are right to get the poly tunnel done. It is fresh in your mind and it needs to be warm to get the plastic on right. And you are right, you need the room and it will extend your growing season.
I chopped my flowering sorrel down and it was back up just as big flowering again in a couple of weeks lol moved it to the herb garden do like perennial veg crops but do have to watch it doesn't self sow everywhere
Hi JB ..I've failed with my carrots too.they took lovely and were getting their true leaves then the rain came ....the hedgehogs just ploughed through the egg tray looking for the juicy worms that had surfaced for the rain .anyway ..you've done so well with your tomatoes ..do you fancy growing a mystery tomato next year ? ...I promise you it will be an impressive tomato
Hi JB, your poytunnel is coming along nicely. Lovely plot tour, can't wait to see your poytunnel finished and your chilli plants I there. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
JB on the orange accordion that’s still green that was next to the ripe one, it appears that one has blossom end rot, hopefully it was just a shadow showing and not BER. Check it out when you have time.
Hopefully it’s just cat facing and not BER. It’s very disappointing when you have a large slicing tomato that you have been eyeing for several weeks turning red and then when you go to pick it’s got BER.
It was lovely to see your excitement with your tomato harvest, I think you might have the bug now for growing even more next year 👍👍. Perhaps chillies on the sunny side of the poly tunnel and tomatoes on the shadier side along with a cucumber/melon growing over an arch across the inside of the door (one at each end) . You could also use arches over paths for climbing beans (easier for picking) Sweet peas/beans, courgettes, small Pattypan squash but I'm sure you have your own ideas
Not just you JB with manky cabbages, I think it is partly down to the rain getting in to the damage caused by slugs Ughh. Mega tomato harvest well done !
Wow those tomatoes JB are so good!!! Mine are all still green. My cabbages were great this year and still have a huge one. Noticed today some small caterpillars on my caulis. Butterflies must have still sneaked in even though they were covered. They always find a hole somewhere. However, isn't it great when you get a harvest. Makes it all worthwhile.
I understand that building the polytunnel is a homage to Steves memory or I understand you making it a priority. With 3 plots and working FT I think you are doing well.
My marketmore fruit look exactly the same and as i'd used saved seed i was initially suspecting they'd cross-pollinated last year. Turns out though the harvested cuc's are fine and the taste is lovely.
Hi JB can you share where you got the black strawberry seeds from please, was it Audrey?. You have such a nice selection of dark tomatoes. I would like to try some myself. Plot tour was great, your butternut squash is looking good. I’m hoping mine gets to a edible size too. I think we have another week of good weather and the last week and into September they say is going to be changeable, so getting the poly covered and secure would put your mind a rest for sure, It’s nice to see it all coming together.
It was Audrey yes! Doesn't look like you can get them in the UK apparently which is a bit of a shame. They aren't the best eating but the indigo blue is amaaazing!
the polytunnel is coming along nicely. My cabbages went manky because of slugs-holes and shredded and slug poo- ugh! The leave were peeled off, and peeled off and peeled off until the only viable bit was the size of a small tennis ball. Keep on gardening! Love your vlogs😃
Of course not! I had a lovely care package from Audrey from real food comes dirty with lots of these. Some from grown local too, and lots that were given to me by a friend! I think tomato revolution is probably one of the best places for interesting varieties in the UK
You know I have to be honest... They look better than they taste 😂 not bad by any means though. The indigo were the best flavour for me, or course that's the plant with the smallest crop 😅
hi jb ide have cold frames at side of polytunnel could be usefull best wishes to jess hope she is ok ide let her have all the greenhouse in the garden just thinking
great progress JB, I have a tunnel frame , I've turned it into a fruitcage instead of greenhouse. Maybe if you see another somewhere, walk in fruit cage or brassica cage is so much nicer.
If you're not going to eat it, share it with the other garden plots or neighbours. It's different with the bolt crops, you compost that but anything edible, give it away. Don't waste food, not cool. Beautiful cabbage, JB. I love the tomato harvest too. I found some Brad seeds over here wooohooo LOL How tall are you? You are as tall as the cross bars in your polytunnel :)
Oh trust me I give away so much to neighbours! A few people had those beans and also hated them so they're for the compost 😅 just one of those things! Congrats on the brads seeds! I need to think about harvesting my own later... I'm only 5'7! Think I went on tippy toes to reach the crop bars 😂
Heya JB, Are you finding the Sungolds split before harvesting, or after? I've never had an a real issue with sungold splitting (as long as you don't leave them to be super-duper over-ripe), but, bit random, I was just wondering in the way you pick / harvest them, well any toms in general really? (There's a reason I ask, I've found there to be a mega increase in splitting if you do it a certain way). On another note, I've found my Sungolds are not as intensely sweet this year, which is a shame as they were simply amazing last year, but I think it's due to us having a real lack of sun this time. Edit: Just seen your tomato harvest and wowee that is a stunning trug of goodies there! You should definitely feel so happy with that.
Yeah I think sometimes I just leave them a day too long on the plant. I pick them by bending the little stem attached to the tomato back on itself. If it snaps instantly or easily it's usually a sign that it's nice and ripe 😊
@@JBNat Aww yes that's what I was going to suggest if you didn't otherwise, and also to leave them with their green top bit on until you want to use them as sometimes just taking that part off can cause the split. I've found that I have more split toms also after we have had lots of rain, causing inconsistent watering and in turn causing the splitting.
Always glad when I watch your videos that I don't have Badgers and foxes in my garden! Just the odd muntjac

Fascinating, love the tomatoes. My wouldn’t Steve chuckle at the parsnips.😊👍🍅🌶️✅
I feel yer smiles JB.. I think you nailed it

You can get a nice autumn salad crop and Chinese salad crop to over winter in the poly tunnel.
The Ruthje has the same tip at the end as the Indigo blue. Very pretty.
Hi jb fabulous tomatoes harvest beautiful lv Irene 😘 xx
Beautiful colours of tomatoes
Fabulous basket of tomatoes!
Those tomatoes are amazing!!

Beautiful tomato harvest!!! 🍅🍅🍅
Your enthusiasm is infectious… love it 😊
steve made a point cover needs to put over the polytunnel when its warm so your right to work on that
JB on the orange accordion that’s still green that was next to the ripe one, it appears that one has blossom end rot, hopefully it was just a shadow showing and not BER. Check it out when you have time.
100% was blossom end rot, what a bugger
Yeah I saw that too - thanks for looking out! I'm not sure if it's BER or just a bit of catting
Hopefully it’s just cat facing and not BER. It’s very disappointing when you have a large slicing tomato that you have been eyeing for several weeks turning red and then when you go to pick it’s got BER.
That was a lovely squeeze 🍅
I have just removed most of the leaves from one of my cucumbers because of red spider mite as well
Good luck!!
Its been so cold in red Edinburgh that i still haven't got any toms over the line yet so its good to see your success.
Still lots of time!
I cant stop smiling for you when i see that Polytunnel coming on so well , so exciting 🙂
Wow those Tommy's! Has jess got some recipies to share to get things in freezer and preserve that fresh taste, or do u give a lot away? X
i use bicarb in with neem and soap it will clear up the powdery mildew on courgettes and pumpkins

Carol you read my mind! That is almost exactly my plan for the tunnel
Not just you JB with manky cabbages, I think it is partly down to the rain getting in to the damage caused by slugs Ughh. Mega tomato harvest well done !
JB Those tomatoes are truly gorgeous!!! Well done!

Enjoying following along you journey. I’ve thrown a few cabbage as I’ve forgotten to harvest them.

Cabbages left too long when it’s got wet then hot then wet then hot. They just rot. Imagine in a compost heap and how things rot

Am a bit confused by the tomatoes you called Brad's Atomic Grape. They are black and don't look like the photos I've seen.🤔
I think they're just extremely variable!
