    I had a German shorthair pointer. It was an absolutely fabulous dog, lived almost up to 16 years of age. I rode a bicycle and he would run together for 20 km a day through woods, near the river and anywhere else. I would take this dog with my everywhere, for instance, to the seaside, or to brush ink painting camps where he would make friends with all people or quietly sleep on an armchair while I was painting. I miss him so much.

    My cousins have an English Pointer named "Smalls". Through Smalls I fell in love with the English Pointer breed. They're loving and playful and can go from lounging around the house to excitable in just a few seconds. He has such a playful demeanor but requires a lot of attention. Definitely my favorite dog breed, and I'm sure you will love them too.

    Ive had 3 vizslas. My last one passed in 2015. The breed is sooooo wonderful! Awesome temperament, sweet, loving, great instincts, which includes a heck of a protective bark that introduces everyone to his protective adult 🦷. All in all, vizslas are unquestionably friendly, loving and wants to be with you and do what you do. They truly are your ride or die! Absolutely wonderful with babies, kids, adults, seniors , other dogs and other animals. And such a soft handsome breed.

    I had a Weimeraner and without any hunting training at 9 months I took him pheasant shooting and he worked, pointed and retrieved his first pheasant on our first hunt. We became inseparable - we knew what each other was thinking. He died of cancer when he was 10 and for over 30 years I have never been able to get another dog - until now; I got a Vizsla. He is only 6 months old now but this weekend we go on our first "hunt" and I try him out on Bunnies and Deer. On our walks he is constantly working Blackbirds and pointing them for me so i have high hopes. I must say, he is extremely affectionate and if I growl at him, he pisses himself and runs off to his bed and lies there until I go to him and make -up! You have to see it!

      We have two Weimaraners, one short hair female and a long hair male. They are a great dog for hunting,retrieving and tracking.
      We have just mated our male long hair with a breeder friends female long hair. She had 12 puppies a week ago, 6 female and 6 male.
      They give you so much affection, they think they are human 😆 they need lots of exercise to keep their brain stimulated.

      We have had two Vizsla's the last one we lost Dec 5, 2019 at the ripe old age of 15 1/3 years old and we took her to the off-leash park daily, as she got older she required less exercise but if the weather was nice she got at least 30 minutes off-leash daily. We hope to get another Vizsla sometime next year.
      We had a German Longhair Pointer who was a year younger, we used both for hunting and after 4 hours of hunting the German Longhair Pointer would need a break and a short nap for lunch while our Vizsla would look at us and almost ask why are we stopping I'm just getting warmed up!

      @@user-di5ci5yg5u I’m sad to say that my Griff is no longer with me. It became impossible to pretend any longer that I could provide for him what I thought I could, and what he would need to thrive. I couldn’t give him enough physical and mental exercise, and I was way out of my depths in trying to train him. I decided to find him a home that would be better for him, and I believe I did that. He was living with me and my parents in a basement apartment in the suburbs, but now he’s in a rural area with land, a pond, and a family who not only loves him as family, but also takes him camping and fishing and boating and jogging. They’ve sent me photos, and he’s doing so well. He even gets along with their cat, and even their lizard, though that one apparently took some doing.
      I miss him. I’ve had dogs before, but never have I lived with a dog before or since who makes me feel like I’m in the presence of something so wild, free, and predatory in nature. That will forever be my favorite thing about Griff - that feeling of bringing the wild with him everywhere he went. It was stunning. What a breathtaking dog he will always be to me.

    I've had several GSPs (German Shorthaired Pointers) and loved them. Some "experts" claim that they are too boisterous in their play for small children, but we've had five children raised with GSPs and never had a problem. Since my wife and I are now empty nesters and live in smaller quarters, we have a brace of Brittany Spaniels (in France, the origin of the breed, they are still called "epagneuls", i.e. spaniels, and if the French call them spaniels, who are we to argue?). These dogs are almost a smaller version of the GSP, except in looks, and have all of the virtues of the German dog. Sweet, loyal, intelligent, and terrific with children, the choice between the Britt and the GSP is a toss-up.

      I had both growing up. My parents got the GSP, Lady, for my brother when I was born. She was elegant, loving, stubborn and a hell of a hunter. I am 75 and still miss Lady. Suds was my dog. We got him when I was 12. Suds was sweet, loving, and a dingbat. He once pointed on a tomato, so dad's hunting partner called him the salad dog.

      @@stratomix333 In fact, we had a small farm, with both house cats and barn cats. In the house, all was fine. Outdoors, the dogs would chase the same cats, but I think that both considered it a game; nobody was ever caught or injured. The GSPs never chased the sheep, although they liked to make the chickens fly (just the hens; the rooster was way too belligerent). And the dogs got along famously with the horses, ponies, and mules.

She must have a walk every day so that she can run and sniff. I believe the most important thing to do to make a hunting dog balanced is exhausting exercise even if it is just for a half-hour. We also walk her at night. Sniffing is a food group for these dogs. If I didn't have a Brittany, I would have a GSP.

    30 years ago I had to put down my lab because of cancer and started researching what my next hunting dog would be. My lab was a very quick learner and amazing retriever with a nose you wouldn't believe. For my style of hunting and the terrain I hunt I had decided it should be a WPG. Well 9 years ago I was finally ready to get another dog and it was a griffon. By then the internet had arrived and I kept doing research and the breed still stood out. To tell you the truth I was skeptical of things they said about the breed. It was too good to be true. I have to say he still amazes me today. He lives to hunt game birds and only game birds. He still won't point grouse (dam things run too much) but is rock steady on woodcock. And as a house dog you couldn't ask for more. You can leave any food anywhere but the floor and he won't touch it. He's a little stand offish with strangers but in a few minutes he's your best friend (who isn't these days.) He's not very affectionate but and will get bored quickly in training sessions. And even at 9 years old he has to unwind after each session by running circles and figure 8's around me. He loves water but I never hunted him over ducks. My sister won't allow it. She's afraid the cold water will give him arthritis. He's never seen water that was too cold for a nice swim yet. He's not as strong a retriever as my lab was but I didn't train him as much for it. He'll retrieve any bird I shoot gently to me. Won't say he's the best breed since I don't have experience with other breeds but let's just say I communicated with someone that worked in an international airport in bomb detection. He had over 20 years experience and he says his Griffon was the best one he ever had. That's good enough for me.

As soon as one of my two kids or my sisters kids step foot in the water on the beach at out cottage she goes on high alert watching them closley from the dock. If a kid tries to go in the water without an adult at the beach she goes wild till someone comes down to the dock. What an amazing breed. She also hunts ruffed and spruce grouse like no other dog i have seen. When they are still or out in the open she points till a gun fires. If they are in the thicks or out of sight she jumps them till they tree and stays local to the bird pointing at the tree they are in. Thats without any serious hunting training. I currently am dogless.
    I raised and trained English/Elhew pointers, great breed, the best in my opinion, hunted over most of the others. I found them to be highly motivated and having great noses. I lost few crippled birds and they even catch birds like grouse without a shot being fired. Not easily trained due to their enthudiastic style. Bred for hunting from horseback, a walking hunter must work with them to keep them in close, but we'll worth the extra training. I used mine for waterfowwling as well. Results varied, but generally successful as duck dogs.
    Formerly an avid bird hunter, there is nothing like the skilled dig well conditioned to hunt and retrieve. It makes for the best quality of hunting experience and I do miss it.

  • @ocvettek07
    @ocvettek07 4 роки тому +4

    We have raised, trained, and hunted over quite a few of the breeds listed here. While both the Weimaraner and GSP are excellent in the field, they both have a strong prey drive when unattended and both can be destructive in the home without a great deal of exercise. Our favorite breed is the Irish Setter (of hunting lines, not bench setters) because of its natural abilities in the field, ability to shut down its energy when indoors, and its comedic personality.

      @scottwegener4082 4 роки тому

      Yeah this video is kinda discredited as soon as it pictures GWP as GSP. GWP can be a slick coat, "buddy has one that is an amazing dog" but a GSP can't have a beard. Also the Deutsch Drahthaar is the most popular hunting dog in Germany which would say it is popular amongst hunters at least. I think the video didn't go off statistical numbers, maybe just Google or AKC searched.

Full of energy, always up for play, and gets along with everyone, one of my cats loves him. Inside the house he is calm, and he even hugs me if I cry at sad movies. Yes, he does chase birds, but he also lovingly brought in a baby pigeon that fell out of his nest and put him down carefully in a safe place in the house, refusing to leave him outside on the cold ground at night, saved the baby's life.
