Bikepacking the Scottish Borders Pt 1 - Tweed Valley and Southern Upland Way

- A trip to the Tweed Valley and the Scottish Borders means one thing and one thing only “Elevation” There is a reason Glentress and Innerleithen are the home of many Scottish gravity events. But the Borders are not only for the adrenaline hungry. A huge network of trails crisscross these hills, meaning it is one of the best destinations in Scotland for some long distance riding as well.
We happened to be heading to the valley during the weekend of the 2021 Enduro World Series event. We dodged the swarms of mountain bikers on the local trails and headed south on the Southern Uplands Way. Our route turned east after St Marys Loch before finding our pitch for the night beside a small lochan.
Join us as we pass and explore castles, lochs high trails and valley descents. Watch out for part two, coming soon where we carry on our route on the second day attempting the Three Brethren and Minch Moor following along the ridge. Each day was about 55km and 5,500ft of climbing per day

Bikes and Kit:
Lindsay and I were riding our favourite steel hard-tails. A big thanks to Pipedream (Scottish Brand, Designed in Edinburgh) for making such awesome bikes. Check out their new SIRIUS if you are interested in a go-anywhere do-anything adventure bike.

We had the bikes loaded up with AcePac Bikepacking Luggage. These are available to buy on own site www.terraventure.co.uk
The video was made using a Go-Pro 8 and photos from our smartphones. We didn't stop to film. Everything was captured on the move with no second takes or scripting. What you see is a fly on the wall fun video documenting our trip.

I highly recommend them, there is a great range of music and effects for making videos.
Sweet. I bikepacked the SUW about 20 years ago. Brought back some memories.
Nice to hear, we are keen to return and do the full route some day!
@@TerraVenture it was quite an expedition. I live in Dunbar so I had that carrot dangling to get me home from Portpatrick.
Looks like a great wee adventure. Roll on part 2.👍
Cheers Kev ! Catching up on the trips from this year! Part 2 in a fortnight!
Another great video!
Cheers Tim, always humbly delighted when people have enjoyed sharing an insight into our trips!
Looks great folks
Cheers Joady 👍
Truly excellent channel. What's your bike set-up?
Thanks for the kind words John. We hope to get back to videos soon. We ride two Pipedream Moxies. They are the original Mk1 which is now even more aggressive geometry. The closest match now would be the Sirius. We use 160mm Rockshox Pikes, though we only have these bikes so they have to do everything. Rest of kit is s from AcePac.
Wow!!! Amazing sceneries! And what an adventure!! Well done you guys!!!
Thanks Joey, we had some fun in the second day too! Descending some of the Trail centre red trails with all our luggage was a laugh!
Nicely edited vid. Looks a cool adventure, subbed for more!
Thanks Pete, much appreciated!
Awesome video! Many thanks for sharing your adventures, and happy new year! 😁
Thanks 🙌, same to you and we have a few good trips lined up in '22!
I Really enjoy your videos. Awesome scenery, great music and you guys are tough and don’t appear to be bothered by anything! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Ken, we are fortunate to live. With all these places on our doorstep and to both enjoy getting out there even if it can be a bit of a challenge at times!
The Captains Road start has improved big time since we did it (probably 5-7 years ago) - boggy mess then.
Yes there is an old trail which looked like marsh and a new one just along which wasn't so much in the dip of the valley.
Great video guys! I think you'll see me at some point of 2022 with a handlebar spread like that 🤣
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to part 2.

It's worth that little extra effort for having a good reward after some good hills!
@@TerraVenture oh aye, it is. I usually take fine cheese, sausage, steak, all sorts 😂
Great video!! 🌎🚴👍
Thank you Stuart
