I think realistically FR D5 is i think the most accurate since the furness railway is one of the closest to the NWR which means its easier & cheaper to rent
They might be brothers, here’s the story: Class 28’s we’re derailing at high speeds so the builder decided to rebuilt them to have a pony truck at the front. This experiment failed and three after the first one was built, he was sent to the Furness railway. The other two stayed at Lancashire and Yorkshire. After the NWR opened, the director bought the one who was sent to the Furness railway. After a few years, the director bought James to replace to other trains who have been loaned by him. Now, they met each other until this day.

I HC that the red engine is an RoD deans goods and he named himself Winston after Winston Churchill and he was purchased in 1918 after fighting in France during the first world war where he was repainted red to help him recover from his trauma and was rebuilt with a front pony truck after his buffer beam was damaged on the front line
Yeah, good point as always. You're right that the second red engine doesn't NECESSARILY need to be related to James. I also found it interesting how CANONICALLY, that would've contradicted Awdry's lore of James being the first of the Class 28s to have the front pony truck modification to make him a mogul, I never thought about that until now. I think the misunderstandings about the red engine kinda stem from the inconsistencies of the writers in the first few books back then, and since Dalby was the first one to draw the second red engine to be a mogul like James, I think Dalby kinda contributed (of course, not like he nor Awdry could've predicted this) to the fanbase (myself included) into the idea of the unnamed second red engine being related to James...and it's also because of him that I ended up thinking of the idea of possibly there being TWO red engines instead of ONE red engine prior to James' arrival due to the wheel arrangements. (In hindsight theoretically, it might contradict the idea that Edward only lived in the shed with FIVE other engines...and only one of them in the shed was red, not two. Although then again, in LATER CANON, Thomas is established to have already existed as the station pilot so the possibility of TWO red engines before James theoretically possible...and it's also possible there was another shed separate from the main engines specifically for the station pilots like Thomas, but who knows?) And you're right about the unknown red engine possibly any steam engine bases that's either an already existing mogul of that time period or already existing 0-6-0 classes that were modified into moguls, that's fun to think about actually. As for where I stand...yeah, I completely agree with your points. For my personal headcanon, I actually go with the idea there were two red engines prior to James' arrival instead of one (partially inspired by the misconception that stemmed from Dalby's illustrations) and that one of those red engines, the one that tried to push Henry out of the tunnel in the books) is the same class as James (that would contradict the lore Awdry later established about James but since this is my personal headcanon, this might as well be an AU) because I actually kinda like the idea of James having a sibling that worked on the NWR prior to him. The second red engine I personally imagine would be a pacific (like in Middleton's illustrations), in my headcanon an LNER Raven Class A2 and female. (You also indeed got a point that the unknown red engine(s, pluralized depending how the fan personally interprets for their headcanons) didn't exactly have any specified confirmed genders either) But yeah, that's my headcanon. In terms of my theory for the OG illustrations on the other hand...about the engine that was supposed push Henry (who was an Atlantic engine in the OG illustrations) out of the tunnel. I personally would like to imagine the engine might've been Edward and not the unknown red engine. (of course, the OG illustrations were mostly uncolored but I digress) This could help emphasize the fact unknown red engine and both 98462 and 87546 are supposed to be completely and utterly insignificant background entities (because they really are not meant to be characters in the first place) to the story that is the Three Railway Engines, where Edward, Henry, and Gordon are supposed to be the main focus. Since when you give characters that are supposed to be completely irrelevant to the story and fade into the background something to do, like what happened with that unknown unnamed red engine because of the illustrations, it might question some people. I mean...yeah, in the Sad Story of Henry, the writing clearly does not name the engine, but I don't see that as a problem. Heck, they even bother classifying their wheel arrangement and color in the narration either. So therefore, whether the intended illustration was supposed to be Edward or Gordon or even some other unknown character you don't know attempting to push Henry out...I don't think it would really matter too badly, since it technically doesn't quite contradict what is said and described happening in the story. Other than establishing the red engine doesn't necessarily have to be James, you can also make an argument that the engine that was SUPPOSED to have pushed Henry out of the tunnel in the OG illustrations doesn't necessarily have to be that red engine. I just think Edward personally makes more sense as the engine that tried to push Henry out of the tunnel in the OG illustrations, since the wheel arrangements match, he's an established named character that's important to the overall book, and I think it suits his character more than say Gordon, who had yet to have grown as a character...plus I'd like to imagine after Edward was let out of the sheds and proved himself for helping Gordon up the hill, the Fat Director decided to give Edward the opportunity to push Henry out of the tunnel even if that did end in failure. It just makes more sense to me, especially from a story standpoint, but that's just my theory.
Edward pushing Henry out of the tunnel makes more sense from a writing perspective than some random one off. However regardless of basis, the red engine probably isn't that important overall. Being either long gone or silently doing his job. He probably would've had a story or some notes if he was interesting.
Of course, it depends on the person's opinions since it's never been outright confirmed. But I actually agree with you! When someone give characters that they clearly intended to be completely insignificant a purpose...then yeah, it raises some questions and I do think the misconceptions do kinda stem from the illustrations not translating well from what might've been intended.
@@megariderfire1994 I'd really like to see more of Awdry's original sketches, if he even continued to make them after a certain point, rather than just saying what he wanted drawn.
Well he and the red engine don’t need to be related in every universe, since didn’t speak too much of the background characters, and he did say not to take any illustrations seriously
Ok im about to say it since no one else gets it, THE ENGINE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO PUSH HENRY OUT WAS INDEED EDWARD BUT IN HIS FURNESS RAILWAY LIVERY!!!!!!!!!
Ok maybe it's James twin like Donald and Douglas but I don't know just like in the video Wilbur Audrey say don't take the illustrations to seriously so it's just a theory The first engine maybe a earlier James maybe the second engine was another design for James or mixed up the colors and supposed to be Edward and that's another theory
Your right it takes away from the point that James gose to sodor but I have another theory that I forgot to mention in the books the second red engine was red but in the adventure begins James was black but that does not count cuz when jeams was introduced in the illustration he was red I it can also be another design of James but I already commenting that so in the video you said we are a lot of engines that are like the second red engine for my opinion maybe but it still does not crack the case or maybe but we need evidence from the writers and Wilbur Audrey
Honestly, with a lot of these background engines as long as it even vaguely resembles how they look in the book it’s passable. He doesn’t have a confirmed basis, we don’t even know the engines name, so you can really do pretty much whatever you want with him. Preferably the basis should have the design elements we see in the illustration, but honestly, I feel like as long as the inspiration is a tender engine that was during the 1920s, you can get away with pretty much anything. As long as you can still tell who the model is supposed to be, you can pretty much use whatever basis you want for your AU.
I personally like to believe that he’s a GCR 9J class (later LNER J11), but without a front pony truck (I like the 0-6-0 look), and with a fowler tender.
For starters, I’ve thought about utilizing both common fan names where this engine’s named Winston but nicknamed Eagle, like Duck actually being named Montague. I’ve thought this engine could be a prototype for the Furness Railway D5s (considering the lighter red livery) built in 1912 where they experimented on giving him a front bogie due to seeing what the L&YR did with James making him a 2-6-0. He was one of many loaned engines from Furness and Midland Railway sent to Sodor in 1915 where he helped with goods on the mainline. That year there was an air raid on Sodor with a plane flying over him shooting a bomb towards him while he was light engine and he was running away but his tender broke away due to the coupling being lose where it got bombed though he survived and no one else died (though Alfred on the Mid Sodor was bombed by a plane). The Midland Railway offered to give him one of their Fowler tenders which he kept and he along with other Furness and Midland engines stayed on until 1923 when Gordon and the other big engines showed up. I like the idea he could be still alive to this day where; a) He could be preserved on The Mainland and has revisited Sodor b) He could be part of the North Western Railway likely working on the Norramby Branchline c) While being part of Sodor could be in a railway museum somewhere around I’m not entirely sure how his personality could be but I’ve thought he could be kind and laid back still no nonsense and stern (less like Edward and more like Rheneas) though not much of an older type.
I love the fact that one UA-camr Trampy has added both James and Thomas so that people wouldn’t complain on who’ll be the one to push Henry out in Rain.
Well, in my head canon, I have a TON of red engines. So many I think it's unholy and unrealistic for the time line, but hey, it's my canon. But the red engine who tries to push Henry out is a Furness railway d5 named Eagle (yeah I know the name ain't original...) And Johnson from Demonofnowhere's channel. You wouldn't believe how popular Johnson has become in the fandom... And yes, I had TWO red engines try to push Henry out, because I just couldn't decide which one to choose so I just said, screw it! They'll both push!
I enjoyed this video and i share your opinions just because the second engine looks like James doesn't mean he/she is a Class 27/28, and before this i actually looked into Mogels and 0-6-0s and in my personal headcanon They are GCR 9J/LNER J11 Heck i have seen people who just dropped the Mogel and go for a 4-6-0, 22tesla did a spooky episode of an engine named Afton a LNWR claughton class and it was to show what james could have become
I have the red engine headcannoned as a Midland Railway 1000 class 4-4-0. Its about the right size, matches some of the features of the first red engine (seen in the shed in the Dalby illustration) and is one of the few engines or this time period that makes sense to be painted red. He would have been one of the Midland Railway engines that was loaned to the NWR early in its life.
Honestly though, the most fitting class that this engine could have is the LBSCR K Class 2-6-0 or the GSWR Class 403 which looks like James(kinda) Or if you wanna keep the mogulification of an 0-6-0, he can be a Midland Railway 3F
I like then Someone is making a Video about How the Red engine isn't Winston, Eagle, Johnson, Or doesn't Need to be Related to James, He/She/them mite Just be A freelance design or A Real Engine Class, maybe he mite be the preserved CIE Class' Scrapped twin, Anieway i like the topic of this vídeo and your Videos as a Holl, Continue the Good Work
Lemme just add smth. Awdry said the engine who pushed him out of the tunnel was supposed to be James but with James being introduced in the next book, Awdry decided it was a new character altogether. With that said the way I see it, Eagle was just a reskin of James who rlly didn't matter. But since an engine who was originally suppose to look like Edward was in the original sketch, I think if we combined the sketch with Dalby's illustration, we'd get an 2-6-0 from the FR. Either way I have a head canon if he was a L&YR class or a FR D5 class.
I like to think that the second red engine is a Dean Goods Engine as it still looks a ,ot like the Dalby illustration or it’s a experimental one-off design that just so happened to look like the Class 28 (plus I feel with some of the background characters in the earlier books were probably one-offs too)
I like to believe Eagle/Winston (real name Winston but he prefers to go by Eagle) is actually a Furness Railway D5 (judging by the red livery) that also became a mogul experiment like James did.
That’s not even canon to the lore Awdry set up, consider his RWS videos are extremely different from the actual RWS, makes it clear it’s not canon to the railway series books Awdry made. If anything that video is his head canon and AU and not the actual RWS lore from Awdry
In my headcanon, this red engine was initially a Class 27 engine but was rebuilt into a class 28 with a 2-6-0 wheel configuration at some point after The Great Crovan's Gate Fire of 1917.
Well in my HC the red engine prob hás a name his called eagle and his actually james's sibling and his a crismon triang 3f like james yes in my au they are triang 3fs
Something to remember, is that James was an actually owned engine, hence the modifications that the railway ordered. This engine, and other side engines, were loaned engines from other companies, and if they are anything like the IRL companies, they didn't buy one offs, only mass produced designs. This means the second red engine has to be a Mogul. Also, because they are loaned, their paint scheme has to be similar to one from an IRL company, like for example, the LMS.
In my head-canon, The Red Engine, whose name is Diana Eagle, is a D5 class, with an experimental pony truck modification. She was loaned to the NWR during the engine crisis, and west back to the Mainland in 1928, where she then became a spare engine at barrow, until the barrow blitz, where she was forgotten about in a shed and presumed dead. Many years later, in 2015, when renovations were going on around her shed, she was found in a horrible state shed was about to be demolished. The NWR made the decision to restore her and she now works on the mainline.
He isn't wrong but then his built actually looks like james as his stripes lining does relate to james except his boiler, people see him as James's older brother since he arrived on sodor before james which you don't believe the adventure begins take on Henry's tunnel and Thomas' lbsc design since lbsc e2 tank engines are actually painted Brown in their livery and Thomas was labeled 108 in his basis in real life, and in the cgi Henry's tunnel, james was pulling himbour with his lancashire and yorkshire livery when it was claimed a red engine, so yes this engine can be named by your opinion and can be your idea of his personality. When james arrived on sodor his ponytruck wasn't there when he was built but in the cgi version he does have his pony truck, after his accident by what I can confirm, james never had his pony truck when he was built and then when he crashed by his wooden break blocks he was sent to the works to be repainted red and got a rebuilt, adding his ponytruck but then changing his tender basis. 3:24 this basis has the smokebox of the 812s. 3:36 and yes this is actually funny that Johnson from demonofnowheres name came from his built design basis. I honestly loved that character 4:48 I found this funny as all the red engines gathered up
@@ScorchZane well it interested and amused me. But your idea for a 0-6-0 wheel formation for this tender locomotive works for me as there was not one who had that wheel arrangement until Donald and Douglas arrived. And I said tender engine before people mention Thomas and then Duck .
In my Canon this red engine is named eagle and him and James are brothers however they both actually started out as class 28 and were both rebuilt into 29 moguls Eagle was actually one of the first 28 to be built while James was one of the last they were both rebuilt in 1920 the only reason I made them brothers was because in my Canon I'm trying to have every member of the main cast which is like 10 to 15 engines have at least some surviving relatives not necessarily siblings but it can be like cousins for example James and Eagle are the cousins of Alled greedy
In my AU the second red engine is a FR D5 without a front bogey (Winston) because i noticed that in the Fandom people randomly think that he is a lyr class 28 that worked with Edward at the furness In my AU that the red engine is from the furness and the idea of the second red engine working with edward at his early years makes more sense
I believe that the second red engine is one of the Midland Engines brought to help build the NWR in the late 1910’s, specifically a Midland Johnson 3F. I also like to think that he twins the names given to him by the fan community, that being Winston, with the famous nickname of Eagle. After build the NWR, he was constantly loaned to the NWR during the Midland Railway’s days and into the days of the big four. He was often brought over to help out when Henry broke down, but was officially brought on to the railway in the 1950’s, maybe following the modernization plan.
In my opinion, i say the second red engine is James because James is the only one to have the boggy truck. And that could be a early design even though he was never supposed to be a main character but thats my opinion
In my canon, The red engine exits, but he isn’t related to James. The red engine is a class 27 while James is a Caledonian Class 34. And the red engine arrived much earlier with Edward (Which in my canon is 1915)
Well the second red engine doesn’t have to be related to James because some people believe that he related to James but he not so here my ideal take on the second red engine is that he’s name is weston a Rod deans goods engine built in 1883 and 1899 without the pony truck he work at the furnace railway with Edward Albert Mickey and other faceless k2s in 1897 he was good at working on goods trains and express services to he arrived on sodor in 1916 and became one of those loaned engines there in 1923 he Weston try push Henry out of the tunnel to no avail and in 1935 Weston would be sent away to work at other heritage railway there he would later return to sodor in 1960s so that he would meet he’s old friend Edward and he stayed on sodor in the present day and that’s my ideal take on the second red engine I hope you like my take on him scorchzane
Here is my reason why i think he was painted back to his original furness railway red livery after years being rebuilt into a class 28 I think becasue the fat director didn’t like how the first red engine was acting childish so he orded this engin🎉
ah yes, for me he looks like a G&SWR 403, from the boiler it looks like it. simply he was built addon member to his class and sent to sodor for goods work, he is painted in NWR red with black lining and yellow boiler bands. even if james came along after a while, this engine does not boast around about his paint, james does after getting repainted. (i just came up with this now, but i think he's a 403 class anyways)
probably edward, i dont know why they would put the same model of edward in the book, it would just make sence to have ti edward instead of a whole new engine, so most likley was edward
3:51 I don't think the Dean Goods would work due to one detail (other than accidently labelling as an "ROD" engine when that was temporary) and that is atop the firebox, you can see a rather familiar-looking bonnet, and there's one railway we can all think of that fits bonnets over the safety valves of their locomotives. Also doesn't help they were built by Swindon. The other three would be fitted with either Ramsbottom or Ross safety valves, which gives somewhat a more modern appearance.
Well in my ideal probaly he is a j11 cuz he work in the nwr and probaly he is probaly he is lotahed and he was nammed sir alfred loid and he was nwrs engine wich he is a 0-4-0 and thats my ideal
How would you react that the j11 Johnson 3f d5 the rod deans goods and the class 28s are the same in the tvs universe or shared the same design in the tvs due to cartooinsh look
I certainly like the idea of this engine being a different class from James. Plus it would make James less special if the L&YR had another experimental Class 28. There’s also a rumour in the fandom that this engine is named Eagle or Winston, similar to how people think 98462 and 87546’s names are Alfred and Crovan respectively.
tbh I not even gonna debunk those names, since it just be the 98462 vid but with the red engines. (However I am gonna debunk the 1st red engines name being Alled Greedy, since no way in hell Awdry even bother to give any of the background characters, a more obscure one at least an name).
@@joshuaW5621 I agree, tho people shouldn’t take fan names as fact, since they were meant to reflect an individual’s AU, head canon or conclusion. Not like a wide factual conclusion, just an interpretation conclusion.
It barely resembles James at all! I think it’s just a freelance engine that Dalby illustrated, and the “actual” second red engine would resemble a LBSCR K class judging by the cab windows, or y’know, it could be a M&SWJR 2-6-0 with inside cylinders, modified cab windows and a Fowler-esk tender, just saying
The D5 or 3F would be my personal pick since iirc the NWR had engines loaned from the Midland Railway and the FR, which is how Edward ended up on Sodor. The 3F would be a great choice considering it actually looks similar to the Dalby illustration, which is neat awesome video as always zane. regards, a person who has never commented on your videos :)

It just makes more sense to me, especially from a story standpoint, but that's just my theory.
glad to hear your thoughts
You're welcome
Edward pushing Henry out of the tunnel makes more sense from a writing perspective than some random one off. However regardless of basis, the red engine probably isn't that important overall. Being either long gone or silently doing his job. He probably would've had a story or some notes if he was interesting.
true after all he wasn’t meant to exist but exists anyway
Of course, it depends on the person's opinions since it's never been outright confirmed. But I actually agree with you! When someone give characters that they clearly intended to be completely insignificant a purpose...then yeah, it raises some questions and I do think the misconceptions do kinda stem from the illustrations not translating well from what might've been intended.

For example, in mine they're an ex-W&S 0-8-0
I personally like to believe that he’s a GCR 9J class (later LNER J11), but without a front pony truck (I like the 0-6-0 look), and with a fowler tender.

Ok.
For starters, I’ve thought about utilizing both common fan names where this engine’s named Winston but nicknamed Eagle, like Duck actually being named Montague.
I’ve thought this engine could be a prototype for the Furness Railway D5s (considering the lighter red livery) built in 1912 where they experimented on giving him a front bogie due to seeing what the L&YR did with James making him a 2-6-0. He was one of many loaned engines from Furness and Midland Railway sent to Sodor in 1915 where he helped with goods on the mainline. That year there was an air raid on Sodor with a plane flying over him shooting a bomb towards him while he was light engine and he was running away but his tender broke away due to the coupling being lose where it got bombed though he survived and no one else died (though Alfred on the Mid Sodor was bombed by a plane). The Midland Railway offered to give him one of their Fowler tenders which he kept and he along with other Furness and Midland engines stayed on until 1923 when Gordon and the other big engines showed up. I like the idea he could be still alive to this day where;
a) He could be preserved on The Mainland and has revisited Sodor
b) He could be part of the North Western Railway likely working on the Norramby Branchline
c) While being part of Sodor could be in a railway museum somewhere around
I’m not entirely sure how his personality could be but I’ve thought he could be kind and laid back still no nonsense and stern (less like Edward and more like Rheneas) though not much of an older type.
I love the fact that one UA-camr Trampy has added both James and Thomas so that people wouldn’t complain on who’ll be the one to push Henry out in Rain.
LMAO
Well, in my head canon, I have a TON of red engines. So many I think it's unholy and unrealistic for the time line, but hey, it's my canon. But the red engine who tries to push Henry out is a Furness railway d5 named Eagle (yeah I know the name ain't original...) And Johnson from Demonofnowhere's channel. You wouldn't believe how popular Johnson has become in the fandom... And yes, I had TWO red engines try to push Henry out, because I just couldn't decide which one to choose so I just said, screw it! They'll both push!
I enjoyed this video and i share your opinions just because the second engine looks like James doesn't mean he/she is a Class 27/28, and before this i actually looked into Mogels and 0-6-0s and in my personal headcanon They are GCR 9J/LNER J11
Heck i have seen people who just dropped the Mogel and go for a 4-6-0, 22tesla did a spooky episode of an engine named Afton a LNWR claughton class and it was to show what james could have become
Though I wouldn't mind a story where a class 28 came to sodor maybe on loan or visiting and you can make whatever stories you want if it
I have the red engine headcannoned as a Midland Railway 1000 class 4-4-0. Its about the right size, matches some of the features of the first red engine (seen in the shed in the Dalby illustration) and is one of the few engines or this time period that makes sense to be painted red. He would have been one of the Midland Railway engines that was loaned to the NWR early in its life.
Honestly though, the most fitting class that this engine could have is the LBSCR K Class 2-6-0 or the GSWR Class 403 which looks like James(kinda)
Or if you wanna keep the mogulification of an 0-6-0, he can be a Midland Railway 3F
Honeslty James did push henry in the adventure Begins
I like to think that the second red engine is a Dean Goods Engine as it still looks a ,ot like the Dalby illustration or it’s a experimental one-off design that just so happened to look like the Class 28 (plus I feel with some of the background characters in the earlier books were probably one-offs too)
I like to believe Eagle/Winston (real name Winston but he prefers to go by Eagle) is actually a Furness Railway D5 (judging by the red livery) that also became a mogul experiment like James did.
Name part is up for debate since Awdry didn’t say much thi I agree he could from the Furness
2:42 anyone ever noticed in this picture that thomas has an express lampcode?
I personally like the D5 for this engine.
Railyard pro actually made a video explaining this in his "The class 28 experiment(RWS lore)".

The fire was in 1930

I think it's not James, in my headcanon, it's a girl, and named Praymilly
Up to you
@@ScorchZane ok
In my AU the second red engine is a FR D5 without a front bogey (Winston) because i noticed that in the Fandom people randomly think that he is a lyr class 28 that worked with Edward at the furness

up to you man
Or a LBSCR K Class
Here is my reason why i think he was painted back to his original furness railway red livery after years being rebuilt into a class 28

ah yes, for me he looks like a G&SWR 403, from the boiler it looks like it.
simply he was built addon member to his class and sent to sodor for goods work, he is painted in NWR red with black lining and yellow boiler bands.
even if james came along after a while, this engine does not boast around about his paint, james does after getting repainted.
