  • Jumping from an airplane takes guts and a strong stomach, but it also takes training and practice. Melissa Anderson takes us to tower week in Airborne School, where students are getting one step closer to taking the big leap.

I went through jump school at Benning in 1971. I had been afraid of heights my whole life. The first time I jumped out of the 34 ft tower, you say you name before you jump so you can be scored. I forgot my name! After the first jump from the tower I’ve never had a fear of heights again for the rest of my life. It scared it right out of me. I loved jumping from the first one out of a C-141. When I turned 50, I made a free fall jump from 13,500 ft. It was awesome!

I was C316 in August 1977. We were doing rear PLFs on swing landing trainer when the black hat dropped me straight on my back. He asked me thru the megaphone if I was ok. All I could see was stars.

Mine was 100. Also, CPT Leonard B Scott was my Airborne Company Commander. He was a great company commander and inspirational leader. He wrote several novels. He is also a great Oklahoman (my home state, too) and a great Sooner fan.

I went through in 65 and the jump master would come by and ask us a question to make sure we weren’t catatonic. The drop zone was in fryer field in Alabama and the jump master asked me what state I was in. I replied a state of shock. The last thing I remember in the airplane was 3 guys ahead of me. The next thing I remember I was outside the airplane with a boot print on my butt.
