  • Equestrian fox hunting in Ireland is a very popular sport which runs from November to March. It's a test of skill and stamina on both horse and rider. It takes you over natural cross country jumps and open country side at speed an not knowing what's ahead is all part of it. A few thrills and spills along the way are all part of the days fun.
    This hunt is run by The Suir Vale Harries Hunt and was filmed by @Brian S

    Irish hunting is truly one of a kind, absolutely crazy! All these riders must think us English are right wimps out on the field! Haha

    One of my favorites videos! You know, aside from that man at 13:00 that was straight up beating that poor horse with that stick. The horse might've been inexperienced in jumping such a wide ditch and that is the human's fault, NOT the horse's.

    Some of these people are way too aggressive with their crop. I know the crop doesn't really hurt the horse, but still...the people continually using the crop were the people whose horses needed it the least. Also, I can't stand the leg slapping. All that does is unbalance you which ends up unbalancing the horse. but there was some great riding too! And all the horses were absolutely lovely. Looks like a lot of fun. :)

      Sarah Barham I know! I hardly ever use my whip on my horse. especially when she's going, I'm just like 'good girl that's it' and give her a little encouragement with my leg, but never use the whip unnecessarily, like some of these guys on here you can see the horse is going but still they give it a smack. sending mixed message I think.

      It does hurt them as they have more nerves in their body than us, they can feel a fly on their skin and that's how they know when to whack it off even through all their hair they can feel it. If they can feel a fly through their hair imagine how painful the whip would be. Yes I do use a whip for guidance and lightly tap on the shoulder but I never full on hit my horse because it is cruel in my belief. I'm not trying to hate just inform x

    They're to fast to use the croup.
    Seldom are our horses hit. I've never hit my horse. He knows his job & does it. And our hunt country isn't for whims.
    Maybe some of those riders need refresher lessons.

    What's the point of the crop? I've gone on many fox hunts in my day and my horses always do what I ask without me having to beat them, it's called being a good horseman and understanding that horses are animals, not machines. The nerve of some people, they have no right to call themselves horse lovers. Ugh.

      Crops are used for steering for asking the horse to use the movement from a certain part of their body aka the hind legs rather than the front legs it has many uses. I find it hard to believe you have been hunting mate.

    @philliplynch the farmer actually hosts the hunt and allows the hunt onto his land, and if he wants a certain area of land to be preserved or not touch then he will let the hunt know. Not trying to be rude, everyone has their own opinions

    Horrible examples of riding. So many riders putting their full weight on their horse's kidneys and bouncing around. So many snatching their pony's mouth over a fence rather then taking hold of the mane and saving the poor horse.

    I don't understand all of the vicious comments against this video. I see no animal abuse or dead foxes. A fair bit of bad riding and over use of the crop, but lots of good horsemanship and fun. it's an entertaining video and I expect if they WERE hunting a fox, it would have got away long ago judging by the speed they are going and the fact that the hounds are not visibly tracking a scent.

    They're all so worked up and rough with their horses, no patience at all when the horse or pony is unsure of a jump or ditch - all they can think about is using the whip I don't hear a kind word or a see a pat of encouragement, I think they are extremely hard on their horses - seems to me it's do as I say or you'll get a crack with the whip.

    Sequence 12:48: The old man with the whip should really get one in the mouth of a horse. The other riders should first learn to ride before they take part in something like this. By tearing the reins, you certainly build trust very quickly. Irony off.

    I do find this video very entertaining. I have not been able to ride for some time and watching this video helps me. I don't want anyone to think I am being rude but I do see many riders who have bad to horrible position over the jumps. Many riders have their legs sticking out in front of them and they are leaning back instead of being in a solid jump or 3-point position. This poor position in the saddle while going over the jumps causes the rider to yank back on the reins which is very hard on the horse's mouth. I would rather see riders in a solid jump position with their legs solidly under their body and I would like to see their hands placed far up on the neck of the horse to prevent the jerking on the horse's mouth. What I am amazed at is the difficulty of the trails and how few riders come off their horse. I would hope the riders would be able to take my constructive criticism and review this video and see where they could improve on their jumping skills and all for the sake of the horse. As they jump now the horse's mouth must be very sore. Oh, I stopped using a bit over 15 years ago and have no problems going over the jumps. If you ride bitless then the horse's mouth will never be sore. Just my observation meant to help the riders improve on their position while jumping. Overall these riders do a good job other than their position while jumping. Looks like everyone is having a great time. Good job to all!

    Great camera work!!!!!! How about a little trail maintenance at the jumps, cut down those head cutters off branches, get rid of that root, and widen the gap. Also spread out at the jumps, every REAL rider knows not to jump so close, you could kill a child or person if someone falls off, and you gallop over his body.

      +avatar3431 trail maintenance involves building back the stone walls and any other damage,this occurs the day after the hunt.some hunts have wall builders who follow during the hunt.the jumps are natural boundries for the land,they are where they are,you either jump them or find a gate and go home.riding a horse across country is dangerous by nature,if you are afraid of being injured,best stay home.

      I totally understand where you are coming from but in reality horses are a lot tougher than we give them credit for, What we ask from them in hunting e.g. jumping ditches and walls, is really not all that different to what horses do in Cross Country or hunter trials. The pony was not really in pain and it had been sympathetically asked to jump the ditch on several occasions and had seen other horses go through.
      As for being snobs, that just a little bit rude and doesn't really represent the reality of most people who hunt.

    • @sarahbarham8592
      @sarahbarham8592 9 років тому +4

      Well I've seen a lot of hunting videos where the land was better suited for jumping. I was very concerned with what I saw in this video, mainly the very treacherous footing around many of these jumps. But I think as long as the conditions are good and as long as you and your horse have the skills and training, I don't seen anything wrong with it. There are many horses that do really like to jump. I often go trail riding in the woods with friends, and we'll jump logs as long as the footing is safe. It's great fun, and our horses are very willing. In fact, they're more excited about jumping than they are about taking a boring walk in the woods. :P

    • @yvesleith123
      @yvesleith123 9 років тому +2

      I'm the first person to say a horse is strong and can't feel pain to the skin like we imagine. But a 13:00 the man on foot 'aiding' the horses to cross like that is doing so in a fashion that is obviously counterproductive and ham-fisted. To the point where he just startles the second horse completely. Not to mention the fact he started hitting them well before they refused anyway. Damn fool of a man in my opinion.
      As for the person who said 'self absorbed SNOBS... Please don't be prejudice when it comes to class or background, be prejudice on action and associate bad action with individual, but don't associate bad action with an entire section of Soceity -
      Many working class people do good things.
      Many working class people do bad things.
      Many Lower middle class people do good things.
      Many lower middle class people do bad things.
      Many middle class people do good things.
      Many middle class people do bad things.
      Many upper middle class....
      You can see where I'm going with this - it's above your intelligence so come on you don't need to be told by a teenager online that it's infantile.
      and anyway this is an Irish Hunt, we let this one become a republic quite a while ago. I'm sure there were a few Brits out with them but I doubt they deserve what is YOUR class snobbery by calling them all self absorbed snobs... They could be perfectly lovely people. You really shouldn't judge people as a grouping, but as individuals, on their merits and virtues.
