  • Morning has broken.
Scottish Gaelic folk song "Bunessan". Lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon.
A "socially distanced" warehouse recording for our Halton Congregation of the New Apostolic Church, taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Morning has broken like the first morning,
blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
praise for them springing fresh from the world.
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlight from heaven,
like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
sprung in completeness where His feet pass.
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning,
born of the one light, Eden saw play.
Praise with elation, praise ev'ry morning,
God's recreation of the new day.

I may be wrong, but this sounds like it's based on the version by Cat Stevens (1971) but played at a slower tempo and also arranged for four parts for the voices.

I should prefer if the accompeniment were louder - I compare to Cat Stevens. I remember my piano teacher (lateron she was a professional pianist) had always had very short fingernails, so she had another position of the fingers than this lady.

As beautiful as this is, it is not a Gaelic folk song and I don't know why you think it is. It is by Cat Stevens.

Morning has Broken is a Christian hymn that was set to the traditional Scottish Gaelic folk song "Bunessan" and first published in 1931 in the 2nd edition of Songs of Praise. Its lyrics were written by the English poet Eleanor Farjeon. Cat Stevens's recording in the 1970s led to the song being known internationally.

@@haltonwarehousechoir7057 You are absolutely wrong this song is an islamic song by Yusuf Islam, who decided to spread his love, positive energy and hope, that he received of his belief in god, to the whole world and he did it very well. :D

It is originally a Scots-Gaelic hymn called Leanabh An Àigh which was written by Mary M. MacDonald (1789-1872) and sung to the tune Bunessan. The English translation is called Child in a Manger. Here is the first verse in Scots-Gaelic:
Leanabh an àigh, an leanabh aig Màiri,
      Rugadh san stàball, Rìgh nan Dùl;
Thàinig don fhàsach, dh'fhuiling nar n-àite
Son' iad an àireamh bhios dha dlùth.

Cat Stevens may have sung this at school in the 1950s, but it isn't by him. It's a Christian hymn first published in 1931. I remember singing at my infants school in 1960.

It certainly wasn't written by Cat Stevens. It's a Christian hymn, first published in 1931. It's set to a traditional Gaelic tune, with words by Eleanor Farjeon.
