Incredibly helpful. I'm pretty sure my dogwood was improperly planted and is suffering from the "bathtub effect" he describes here. I'm going to go raise it up and backfill with topsoil to see if it helps.
Mike today a landscape yard wanted to sell me a weeping cherry, 3" trunk, 12' tall. But it has been B & B'ed on that lot for a year. This location is just north of Atlanta, GA. So what problems will this tree have for being on a lot that long? PS last year we had a dry Summer.
for southern california even if the burlap is natural (not artificial burlap) and you know it's natural if you set fire to a portion of it and it changes to ash, the burlap will not decompose fast enough, since we have less than 20 inches of rain a year. The burlap has to come off in Southern California, but with care.
what about when the b and b comes with a metal nest around the ball? I always use wire cutters to take it off but then the ball becomes unstable as im putting it in to the ground and im afraid the tree will become damaged, what should i do mike?
Wow usually this guy is one of the best who knows what he's talkin about. Vertical slicing Potbound Roots down the sides is nowhere near sufficient. Totally shave off the whole surface and bottom around outside of root ball to where Roots we're still growing straight outbound from ball. As an arborist, number one cardinal rule is to never artificially raise grade directly on top of existing root system below. otherwise root system will become suffocated from needed oxygen and new adventitious Roots will circle around trunk.
Its been 10 years since this was posted.
Good info and i subscribed because of the content and the invisible book.
Very good video on planting burlap ball trees. Our soil has a lot of clay so this was good info on how to deal with that.
That's the BEST tree growing advice I have heard....pity I didn't see this video I the spring when I planted 6 trees in my clay packed yard!
I have many 2 year old olive trees I plan to transplant, thanks Mike.
