- Shermann tank engine, gas powered, 1100CI (18 litters ), 32V, fuel injected with two Garrett GT-45 turbochargers in Brazil. First start in two weaks. This is the largest big block gas engine produced on the world.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but this engine is 2/3 of a V12 that Ford designed to outclass the Rolls Merlin. The Army told Ford that they weren't interested, that Packard was making the Merlin and they had the Allison as second choice, but later they requested that a V8 version be made for Sherman tanks. Later there was limited production of a full V12 for heavy tanks, but those are now super-rare. All were normally-aspirated, BTW.

@@4bidn.Knwldg Certainly, but it's a 60 degree V, not 90 degrees like a normal V8. And it used a flat crank. So it had a funky firing spacing and vibrated a plot. Later they made some V12s for use in heavier tanks. I wish someone had done a V12 aircraft installation!
It was a copy of the Merlin - even had the same bore and spacing I believe. The Merlin was also available as an 18l V8 - the Meteorite.
@@agt155 Sorry. the Ford was totally different. Henry wanted to make a better engine than the Merlin, something to do with him not getting the contract to license-build Merlins, which was awarded to Packard. He specified the same bore and stroke to make a point. Different how? Ford, dual overhead cams and pent-roof combustion chambers vs Merlin single overhead cam, pancake combustion chamber for starters.
Whether the Ford would have been better will never be known because the Army wasn't interested in it because Packard would be making Merlins and the Allison was available as backup. It isn't a sure thing that the Ford would have been as good as planned because Rolls had a headstart in development and had a supercharging genius on board to design their continual upgrades
Here's an interesting piece of trivia. I have 3 GAA blocks, one with a ::4xxx" serial #, another with an "8xxx" serial #, and the 3rd one with a 205xx serial #. On all three blocks, if you look at the block, it is a work of casting art, but all three, behind the rear cylinder and just ahead of the bellhousing flange, there is a perfect flaw in the castings, a vertical seam where at the Ford foundry they sawed off the casting cores when converting the V12 cores to be V8 cores. The story about the V12s being changed over to be V8s is exactly correct.

DOHC 32V made in 1944!!!! Here in Brazil tere are tree brand new, this one with fuel injection and turbos and two completlly stock. They probablly will never be used.

@@trailerparksupercars7180 Price wod be very cheap. I had this Engines and made this with two turbos, than I sold all tree to a buy, but he broke down. So he gave the engines to pay a debt for very little money, but nobady wod use such a thing in Brazil.

I think they used to early drag race them, they were too dominant and had to outlaw them.
Imagination is all I see on UA-cam one car show up in top gear but that's it now everyone doing this crazy swaps and no show of it tearing asphalt
The GAA has more torque @ 1000 rpms than any of the Cummins, GM or Ford 6.7 turbo diesels have at any rpms in factory form today. It has 1000-lbs of torque at 1000 rpms, naturally aspirated on 80-octane gas. Displacement-wise, its bigger than (3) Chevy 350s, (6) Toyota Camrys or (8) VW New Beetles. If the man parked next to you at the local burger doodle says he's got a Chevy 502 big block (454 with a 1/2 stroker crank) in his truck, you can tell him, "good deal, and if you had another 48 cubic inches, you'd be half as big as my Ford.
How would you get the power to the ground??

Perfect motor for an old f600 4x4 mud truck. This engine stock had over a thousand foot pounds of torque at 2200 rpm. So I'm thinking that two ton axles would really really sing.
It is 1000 lbs / ft of torque at 1000 rpm,, not 2000 rpm. It carried this torque to beyond the governor point. I have the Ford Dyno sheets from 1942. Thats stock in 1942, and its possible to look at the Ford dyno sheet and see that the engine starts running out of carburetor at 2600 rpm. The first thing any modifier does is add carburetion.TRUE STORY: I have a friend in Denver who had a friend in Washington that was in the logging business years ago. His logging truck had a GAA as an engine. My friend was visiting him one time, and just asked him, "what gear do you run your rig in when loaded.? The man just said, "whatever gear it happens to be in. " Again, its 1000 lbs of torque at every rpm from 1000-2800" stock. NOTE:the Cummins, Power Stroke and Duramax diesels just got to the 1000-lb torque point at peak torque about 3 years ago. At peak only. And thats with big turbos and computer controls, etc. The GAA had that much from Idle, to past redline in 1942. Stock.
i never understood why ford didn't make more of this type engine, it was way a head of the flatheads six cylinders

18 liters is what this engine displaced. Wouldn't have been practical for any production car.
The engine was simply not powerful enough for tank applications with a mass exceeding that of the Sherman. The Pershing tank struggled at moving, leading to its replacement with a Allison V12 in the Korean War. And with the M60, the Allison engine started using diesel, ie. The AVDS-1790. But this is a pretty torquey v8 nonetheless, it’s just not particularly powerful at this size compared to a V12.
@@topsecret1837 This engine was originally designed as a V-12 and produced far more power than Merlins or Allisons. It was called the GAC and was installed in some tanks such as the heavy T-29's and T-32's. The V-8 shown in this video is the GAA derivative. Henry Ford created the V-12 version prior to WWII in expectation of military contracts, but he was screwed over. This was by any standard the most advanced piston engine of its day. Even Merlins were antiquated in comparison. Allison's were a joke in comparison to GAC's.
I saw one a guy found at a scrap yard bought it super charged it went tractor pulling with it 1080 c I d ran forever

The guy who bought from me wants to sell. This engine has not being used, and it is with Mercedes 5 speed manuall trans.

@@svenrb Haha I've been wanting to either find an old 534 super duty block or one of these for an older f250. You don't realize just how advanced this motor was for it's time until you realize how light it is and how long it can run high RPM for. And you certainly wouldn't guess that a WWII motor could be on par with many of todays engines. The only advantage I see to a brand new Detroit is the gas mileage. Big deal commercially but frankly I think that could be fixed if it was turned into a diesel. Power might need to come down though.

@@De19thKingJulion, I wondered. I saw a video of a GAA motored Sherman running & driving recently and it sounded like a big 4 pot motor. A mate was attempting to restore a Sherman (In Ireland) and had a brand NOS engine sat on a crate, but I never heard it run.
One of the innovations, yes it had a flat plane crank. Also was a side-oiler, tapered piston pins, 12,080 of them had 4 bolt mains with a double splay on the bearing caps. Cams were shaft driven with a worm gear turning the cams. Oil and water pumps, distributors and PTOs were also shaft driven. I don't care how many engines you may have taken apart and put back together, or whatever brand, you've never worked on an engine like a GAA.

It is very likelly this engine will be trashed. I sold it, the guy broke out and nobady is interested on keeping the project. I had tree brand new GAAS, one is this one and two all stock.
This engine would be right for a dry lakes racer, it can run in the AA/BGS class. If it was in a Ford F1, it would run in the AA/BGMP class. What are you waiting for?

Ese motor era muy adelantado en su época (1942->)(por cierto, hubo blocks más grandes en motores de avión: V12s en torno a los 27 litros) .Cuánta potencia lograron con los turbos? Saludos desde Chile.
Verdade, com dois turbos dava fácil 1500Hp, mas não chegamos a usar. O projeto foi abandonado e os motores provavelmente nunca serão usados em nada.

He's ran it at 8 lbs boost on ethanol, which is the normal fuel in Brazil.

What kind of power is this beast making?
Stock in 1942, it made 1000 lbs torque or more at every rpm from just off idle (1000 rpm) to past the red line. 500 hp @ 2600 rpm redline, 525 @ 2800.

Fuel injection should fire rite off ?
A little difficult to start it of because It need more rotaton to start firing. The stock starter is too slow to allow fuel injetcion to read the engine position. The solution was to use 3 12Volts battery, making 36Volts instead of 24Volts original. With two batteries it does not start.
Certain not the largest gas engine. Many many more larger. The rolls is 1600+, the Allison 1710 CI. The big British quad bank was over 3000CU. Hell, Fiat made one bigger in 1920. In a car.
The largest V8 water cooled aluminum engine. The Rolls and the Allison were V12s.
That's got to make some monster torque. Weren't they supposed to make 1400 at idle in stock form?
Nobady used this engine. I sold it, and the buy who bought had financial problems and decided do not finish his project.

It was supposed to be a v12, but the army didnt want it, so they chopped 4cyl off to make this, I think its 1800 torque at 1200 rpm

We had a 289 shoehorned into a 64-1/2 Stang Convert, and there wasn't room to run your hand down between the rocker and the inner fender well. You could probably fit a GAA in there if you took all the seats and steering wheel out, then drop the engine in the interior of the car. That's about it, though. LOL

Must have a very strong transmission.
You'd need straight up custom driveshafts and probably a twin countershaft trans, not to mention a crazy amount of cutting and fitting to even put that monster in an engine bay, even with as much room as an old truck has. That engine built the way it is with TT's would be terrifying.
A real shame to see these engines being wrecked in this kind of "projects".
It just makes meaningfull WW2 restoration projects more and more expensive or even not possible.

Its not as hard as you think, my first conversion was making my Big Block IH motor fuel injected using junkyard GM and Ford components.
The originals were fuel injected I think. Mechanical injection.
@@SoI_Badguy These engines came with a pair of Stromberg aircraft 2-bbl carburetors that worked like crap. It was the Germans who had fuel injection.

About what I expected from such a large industrial engine. Where did you even find that? Love the huge engines from the days of the industrial gas burners.
The engines ( I had 3 of them ) were on the Brazilian army, never used. I decided not to assemble my car, because it was getting too expensive and sold the engines.

Get those turbos off and slap a supercharger on it
Supercharger is good for smaller engines, wen you need torque on lower RPMs. They do not give as much horsepower you get wiht Turbo, but give you puwer faster and on lower RPM. On the GAA, you have plenty of torque on all rpms, so Turbo is much better.

Smidje did run 14-71 blowers on their pull engines, but the 14-71 wasn't big enough to really pressurize the motor, is what they said when they switched over to turbos.

Day take 2300Hp from it on tractor Pull in your country. I do not know what you mean by substantial power. One American guy took 1100HP just with fuel injection and higher compression rate ( no turbo ir supercharger ).
The Smidje pullin team in Europe ran one with dual turbos without problems at 40-50 psi in relatively stock form However at one pull they tried to run it at 60psi, and it well and truly grenaded itself at 58 psi using methanol. Now they've added some billet items, (stud girdle, crank, rods, pistons and heads) and run it without blowoff valves, and it pulls 60-70 pounds of boost according to their data logger. You say they're cheating by using some billet items.. not any more than a top fuel or top alcohol hemi in a dragster. Alcohol at 60-70 lbs boost and a full load in a pulling tractor.

The GAA is the largest ALUMINUM water cooled V-8 ever built. Le Roi, also know as RoiLine, but definitely not called "Leroy", were iron blocks. The H2470
displaced 2474 cu.in.
