Great news Sarah! When you were playing Minecraft the other time on your channel I now today found the Minecraft bedrock and played with my bf and had a lot of help from my mom and we were figuring out how to add friend and all that stuff and we did it! We played and he showed me his world and I think we can try some time if we can play

Great job on the video & the commentary. A fascinating video! When the weather forecast is bad at the destination they load even more fuel in case of diversions. And all the way to Auckland the pilots would have been monitoring the situation at Auckland and planning for a diversion to Christchurch etc. If necessary a B787 could land at Wellington as well. On Juan Brown's Blancolirio channel, he has a video that explains how pilots plan for these long flights over the Pacific. He's a co-pilot on the B777 & flies on the LAX to Sydney route.

The flight only made one attempt at a landing btw, not three

We went just about onto the runway first time then lowered again twice more and the engines roared those other times to raise us higher and the pilot said we were attempting the 2nd and third times the engines roared again. So I dunno. It was scary on the flight the three times the engines roared to get us higher again

@@SarahsLifeTube it seemed you were pretty low for the first approach. I assume they reached minimums (a number set where if they can’t see the runway they must do a go around) and couldn’t see the runway. Went around. Then lined up a second time on a long final, which then I assume a plane infront reported a go around and so did yours. They will have done the same on the 3rd as there was next to no visible weather from your window. They then will have diverted to Christchurch as it’s a safer option than anywhere near Auckland. Most likely it’s because it’s an international airport as well and there aren’t many in New Zealand. Plus they will have had the fuel to go Christchurch which will have been planned prior to their flight.

Plus the runway lighting not working in Auckland probably set off the 3rd approach.

So the plane in front of us slid off the runway taking out 6 lights so we were the very next plane to land. That sounds exactly right that we were very very low on first attempt but higher on 2nd and 3rd attempts when the pilot aborted those. After the third we circled for about half an hour whilst the light were inspected. Then came the time where we had to go to Christchurch otherwise if we circled longer we wouldn’t have enough fuel to make it to Christchurch.

@@SarahsLifeTube In theory they could have landed. Planes like that have ILS (Instrument Landing System) where the plane talks to the tower and lands automatically. The minimums on that is a lot lower as well. I know Auckland has the capabilities to do an ILS landing, there might have been weather issues, clearly. But another possibility is icing. People who were landing might have been reporting icing. Icing is where ice attaches to the plane and can cause the planes aerodynamics to be all messed up, it causes a lot of crashes and isn’t worth it. But modern planes have anti ice systems so they shouldn’t have had to worry about it.
