LONEWOLF, I'm not sure what is needed for the country that you reside in. With that being said, I would encourage you to reach out to whatever park that is near you and contact their staff for further guidance. Best wishes and happy trails.
I'm getting out of the military in a couple years and realized a desk job is not what I need in my life, so I'm thinking about going back home and becoming a Park Ranger up at the Olympic Park in Washington State once my current contract is up. I know you don't work for that park, but would you mind me asking what the hours are like on average that you and your coworkers put in? I'm wanting to use my GI bill to pursue higher education and am curious if it's possible to take classes (whether online or in person) and work as a Park Ranger at the same time. Thanks!
Hey there Recon, being full-time commissioned officers/rangers we work 37.5 hrs per week for the state of TN. However, during the summer months those hours are exceeded. This is of course based upon the type of park you are working at. Best of luck!
How many seasonal jobs does it typically take to land a permanent job? I’m interested in the field and potentially soon going for a parks and resource online masters program but I’m worried about not having a consistent income.
For me, I only had one summer of seasonal work and then I got hired on full-time. It varies per your employer. You also have to factor in your overall resume. You may or may not already have the experience that your employer desires.
Depends on if you are going into the position of Law Enforcement or Interpretation. Really depends on where you are trying to get stationed at as well.
I'm currently very interested in becoming a park ranger. I plan on going to school for natural science and or forestry. But I don't know if my bad history will hold me back from becoming a park ranger. How would you go about this?
Great question. Some employers may require rangers to live onsite or near the park. TN State Parks does not require that, but living at the park if you are able to, can be a nice convenience.
All I can speak for is TN State Parks. We all wear campaign hats during special events. All of our ranges are certified Law Enforcement Officers who carry a firearm. We have wifi at our HQ, I can't speak for other parks. Yes, you can carry a knife. Best wishes.
I just graduated college with my Bachelor in Environmental Studies and wish to become a park ranger. I actually just got a seasonal job with Geneva State Park. A question I have, is are you a law enforcement park ranger or interpretive? And just curious for law enforcement, how is the process of getting there? I know there's academy or training but unsure how it is and how long it is, etc etc
TN State Parks will put you thru the LE Academy. Click here to learn more about what I get to do as a Park Ranger: ua-cam.com/video/U8IzkubIePQ/v-deo.html

Good morning. The question I have is am I to old to do this job? I just got out of the Navy of 17 years and I am 39 years old today. I still need a degree but always wanted to do something like Park ranger, Forrest ranger or Game warden.
Most ranger jobs that I have seen do require a 4 year degree. You will need to research that question from the employer that you desire. I started when I was 34ish, wish you luck.
it is extremely hard to become a ranger. There are very few positions out there, and a multitude of people that want to become rangers. Ive known several young men who went to school to become rangers and spent every waking free moment in the woods. Do you think there are a glut of applicants trying to fill a minimum of positions?
Hi, how are you my friend? First of all, thank you for the video! My name's Hugo, I'm from brazil and I would like to know if it's possible try to do an application for this work, for a year round.
Hey thanks for the great Video. Well is it mandatory to be an US citizen to work as a ranger? I have the German citizenship and a Bachelor degree in Geoscience. We had several projects about environmental issues so thats why I was thinking about to get more practical experience outside.
I have worked as a cna at a hospital and I would like to switch careers and looking into becoming a ranger do you think that would look okay to become a ranger?
I’m considering going to school for associates in forestry and wildlife management. Would that be enough to qualify for a park ranger career or would I need some law enforcement credentials as well?
Hello Stanktatious, that AS degree would be a great building block for your foundation as a ranger. However, most employers would like to see/require the 4 year BS degree. Many of our seasonal staff start off with that degree and then transition to the BS. Research who you would like to be employed by and learn what their requirements are. Call a ranger from that agency/dept to learn about the details. Most employers will send you to and also pay for the LE Academy once you are hired.
I want to become a park ranger but the salaries are so low that I don’t understand how you can live off of it. Is there a place you can live similar to how the military has barracks for single service members? Also if you get married and start a family, do you get a higher salary to support them? I just want to know if I have a path that can sustain me through life before I commit to this
Great question Ammo, not to my knowledge. Some parks offer on-site housing for free or at a reduced rate as a perk. Just depends on your employer and what they may offer.
I lived in the woods in a small (off grid) cabin for six months. When I moved back to the city, I discovered I was not comfortable in the artificial environment. I'm in Utah. Where should I start?
Im really considering getting my foot in the door by volunteering , and getting in that way. But I want to know do you have to shave? I have a 8inch beard, and I plan on letting it go as long as it can. I don't want to be reduced to clean shaven or even a peach fuzz goate. I currently work in a factory, but I'm over the shop life. I wantbto be out going on adventures and helping animals. I want a job thats like this, animal control etc, and still be able to do what I want with my looks. Thank you.
Hi, will a bachelors degree in biology work too? I am considering in being a park ranger in texas. The only problem is that my local university doesn't offer degrees in park administration, natural resource management, or any other similar degrees you would expect a park ranger to get. Edit: nevermind about biology. It didn't interest me, any other good majors, recommendations?
I have met a few rangers with TN State Parks who have earned a degree in Biology. I cannot speak for Texas, you will have to research their qualifications. Best of luck and happy trails.
Hey great video! I was I’m currently in community college and I’ve seen some ranger academy programs known as PRLEA, that cover all of the training, I was wondering if going straight into an academy like that would substitute instead of getting a degree? Thanks
Sorry for the late response Master. Honestly, it just depends on who your employer will be and what they typically do. TN State Parks doesn't mind taking someone who has earned their BS degree and then, once hired, they will pay for them to attend a LE Academy.

Hi, I was wondering do most park rangers get an associates degree in Natural Resources? I would go for a bachelor's but I don't want to take hardcore classes like microbiology and chemistry
Hello Marlict1, most rangers obtain a BS degree as a minimum. It depends on your employer and their requirements. TN State Park Rangers do not require a degree in Natural Resources but that could be helpful based upon what park you might work at.
@@hiwasseeocoee6075 Thanks for the advice I was doing Video Editing before I thought about Natural Resources but I think i'll continue video editing but definitely help out at my local parks sometimes I will pass this useful information to other NR majors at my school
I’m current a senior in high school, I’m planning on studying environment studies in college. Is it difficult to get a job out of your home state at a national park, since I would rather not work in state park or something like that?
Drums, there are no PT Test for TN State Parks for the ranger position. However, rangers are required to complete a basic obstacle course at the 12 week basic police academy (TLETA) located in Nashville. Other parks/states may require a specific test. You will need to check with your state of preference.
Hi there! I'm a Kentucky university student who's studying Rec and Park Administration, and my minor is being an EMT/AEMT. Do you know how the job process works here?
Hey there Mango, most folks apply for seasonal positions such as Seasonal Interpretive Recreators (SIR) or as Summer Maintenance Staff while they are in school or have recently graduated. About 60% of folks get hired on with TN State Parks that route the other 40% roughly come in thru other routes.
First off: thanks for the video. I'm from The Netherlands and have recently been doing research about being a Park Ranger as it is a job that I would like to do. On to my question: do you have any recommendations and/or ideas about what I would have to do to move to the U.S. and become a Park Ranger and what would it all take to plan it correctly. Thanks in advance and thanks again for the video.

I have a criminal justice degree and after hopping around from job to job, I am really interested about going into park ranger career. I’m just curious about the police academy that you have to do. Are you paid while you go through the academy? Does everyone go through the academy, even if your position in the park isn’t in enforcement or requires you to carry a gun?
Hey I have a question- So you said for step one, to examine yourself and your passions, and why you have those passions Then you said if these align with the motives of being a park ranger, then it might be a good fit- So what would you say are some examples of the motives for being a park ranger?
Marcus, rangers get to help people and serve them. They protect people from people and also protect nature from people. Rangers serve as first responders, medics, law enforcement agents, grounds maintenance, teachers/educators. They work outside in various conditions with various people groups. A ranger's motive should be wanting to benefit a park in the above capacity. Hope this helps.
Start out as a seasonal ranger at a park near you. Or just simply call up a park and conduct a ride-a-long. Intro jobs like grounds maintenance or visitor center receptionist are good to have.
Nice video. I would like to ask are there any university degree courses suitable or required to study in order to become a ranger? Because I am currently a business student but I am quite passionate about the natural environment.
Thanks for your response. I would say courses in Ecology, Wildlife, Recreation, Law, Leadership, Biology are good to have. None that I know are required with Tennessee State Parks. Please look at the requirements that your possible employer would want you to have. Happy Trails!
Hey I’m a college student in Utah, does it really matter what degree I end up with? Could I end up with a marketing or sports management degree and still become a park ranger?
Yes, the degree specification does matter. You will want to look at what your potential employers would like from their applicants. Call up your local park office and see what their opinion is.
@@garrettlosabia3818 Two rangers at my park have that same degree. It just depends on the park you are applying to and what they require. Please research what the requirements are with who you would like to work for.

Thank you for the video! I'm a rising senior in high school and I'm considering an environmental studies degree, or a parks and recreation degree if the college offers one. Would an environmental studies degree be helpful? How much of the degree would be math and science related?
Hey Shreeya, good to hear from you. An Environmental Studies degree would be helpful. You can expect a decent volume of both science and math. Check your potential school's Degree Completion Plan for the specific details for the course load for the degree major that interest you. Congrats on almost being done with High School, go change the world!
@@hiwasseeocoee6075 I definitely will, and thank you very much! I was also wondering if an environmental policy degree could be helpful for becoming a park ranger? I think I'm more interested in the policy and law side, and the degree seems versatile as well.
@@shreeyagupta8599 I think that you are right.
I just turnt 22 I was a amateur boxer and had to retire I ve spent 3 years learning bushcraft and wilderness skills and I think being a park ranger is what I want to do with my life but I don't know how
How does experience in EMS affect my resume for this job? Is that something they look for or overall a non-factor?
Yes and no... Here at TN State Parks all of our rangers are EMRs at a minimum. I think that would be helpful to have on a resume.
I have a question? If you could answer thank you regardless.
Where can I start to be a park ranger, by this I mean Do you need some study in certain areas?
I don't live in U.S and I have never hike nor go the forest here! But There is something that I feel within, a love for the forest and wildlife. Away from the common society that lives in city!
Thanks for reading the comment!
LONEWOLF, I'm not sure what is needed for the country that you reside in. With that being said, I would encourage you to reach out to whatever park that is near you and contact their staff for further guidance. Best wishes and happy trails.
@@hiwasseeocoee6075 Thank you! I Will make further research in my country. Thanks!

Sure does help!
Hi I am 15 years old inspiring to be forest ranger! But I am afraid that I wear glasses, can I still be the forest ranger?
I'm 17 and I wear glasses, yeah man we're still eligible
@@hiwasseeocoee6075 Appreciate it thank you!
What do you think the most impotent college degree is do become a National Park Ranger?
Depends on if you are going into the position of Law Enforcement or Interpretation. Really depends on where you are trying to get stationed at as well.
I'm currently very interested in becoming a park ranger. I plan on going to school for natural science and or forestry. But I don't know if my bad history will hold me back from becoming a park ranger. How would you go about this?
Great video! I am looking to start working in the outdoors!
what prevents you from doing outdoor activities in nature, in the mountains or parks,?
Awesome video. Is there color vision requirements? Also any advice for out of state applicants? Thank you!
It all depends on who your employer will be. When I applied to TN I was out of state.
Are park rangers required to live in the park? Thank you very much!
Great question. Some employers may require rangers to live onsite or near the park. TN State Parks does not require that, but living at the park if you are able to, can be a nice convenience.
Does everyone get to wear the Stetson? Does a park ranger always carry a firearm? Is there wifi at HQ? Can I carry a buck knife?

Hi is a degree always required or could you substitute with work experience?
Just depends on your employer. Yes, with TN State Parks.
Well I just graduated cosmetology school so my family won’t complain that I didn’t go to school and I’m a nature based person I grew up in the woods and all that my dad bassically lived on a camp ground etc Im really interested in it and I would enjoy getting into it especially if I can work a lot and at least be able to pay phone bill food and stuff off the bat I’m still confused by a lot of the information as in do I need to go to school for skill sets or can I find a place that will teach me them but will only count it ass volunteer and not a paying job.
It depends on what the requirements are for what employer you will go with.
Good morning. The question I have is am I to old to do this job? I just got out of the Navy of 17 years and I am 39 years old today. I still need a degree but always wanted to do something like Park ranger, Forrest ranger or Game warden.
Negative, many employers do not have an age requirement. Thank you for your service and best of luck!
This guy gets it.
Is it possible to become a park ranger without a degree? I'm 32 years old trying to get into park ranger or something like that outdoors
Yes, I do. It usually takes a few years of persistent effort to gain employment.
Certainly, rangers will often have a medical background.
Volunteer at a nearby park and see where life takes you.

Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
Is American Citizenship absolutely required to become a seasonal Park Ranger?
You would want to contact your employer directly. Not sure my friend.

Yes and no, depends on the candidate and their experience.
Is it easier to transfer to the park ranger service coming from a branch of the military?
Depends on the hiring agency. Having a military background can be helpful for your resume.
I was wondering what I need to be able to do for a Park Ranger pt test

I want to be a ranger, but im not sure what or how to study

How necessary is it to have a bachelors degree. I have an associates
If you already have Army experience and a degree, do you typically have a higher starting pay as a park Ranger?
Depends on your employer, but usually no. For the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, I believe you would be able to retire early. I'm not entirely sure.
First off: thanks for the video. I'm from The Netherlands and have recently been doing research about being a Park Ranger as it is a job that I would like to do. Considering I live in a different country this obviously brings multiple problems in terms of a lot of general information about the U.S. And its work habits. On to my question: do you have any recommendations and/or ideas about what I would have to do to move to the U.S. and become a Park Ranger and what would it all take to plan it correctly. Thanks in advance and thanks again for the video.
Hello Neils, thanks for your comment. You would need to research Work Visas for the U.S. or marry a U.S. citizen to gain citizenship. Honestly, I'm not too sure on what the process would like for you. Best of luck.

Hey I have a question-
So you said for step one, to examine yourself and your passions, and why you have those passions
Then you said if these align with the motives of being a park ranger, then it might be a good fit-
So what would you say are some examples of the motives for being a park ranger?
Marcus, rangers get to help people and serve them. They protect people from people and also protect nature from people. Rangers serve as first responders, medics, law enforcement agents, grounds maintenance, teachers/educators. They work outside in various conditions with various people groups. A ranger's motive should be wanting to benefit a park in the above capacity. Hope this helps.
