Canadian Idol 2004
Top 6 perform Gordon Lightfoot's 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy'
This was the first time a group performance included the contestants playing instruments on an Idol show.
Listed from 6th place to winner:
Elena Juatco - keyboard
Shane Wiebe - bass guitar
Jason Greeley - guitar
Jacob Hoggard - guitar
Theresa Sokyrka - mandolin
Kalan Porter - violin
Today is August 19, 2014. This happened ten years ago tonight, and was the best thing ever to happen to Canadian Idol. A masterpiece by any standard.
Oh, my Canadian heart is just bursting!! Gordon Lightfoot, you are A TRUE CANADIAN TREASURE!!!
RIP Gordon Lightfoot. This has always been my favourite cover of the song.
I must admit I have never followed any Idol shows whatsoever. But did I seem to miss the boat on this one. God Bless You for posting this Gordon Lightfoot tribute! I get goosebumps no less that 10 times throughout this video. The singers weren't 100% perfect, but it was a joy to see their talents, and their own contributions to this timeless classic. Isn't that what the artistry of music is all about? A fabulous job by both the established talent, and all of the emerging generation.
It was four years ago tonight . . . August 19, 2004. It remains a masterpiece, and the best thing Canadian Idol has ever done.
again I also Thank You for Your Contrabution To Our Country's Music Traditions.
My You Rest in Piece & my Friend & Condolences to Your Family.
fr. Canada 🇨🇦✌🙏 🇨🇦.
Mr. Gordon Lightfoot must have been totally honored so many talented young singers performing his classic song. Well Done... Love it.!!
Ho-LEE-CRAP!!! Mad props from America. Bows head and recognizes greatness. You all knocked this one out of the park and showed our "American Idols" a thing or two!!!
I write this on August 19, 2019, and this performance took place fifteen years ago tonight. I stand by my comments below. The best thing ever to happen to Canadian Idol. A masterpiece by any standard.
This just proves the amount of talent that Canadian musicians have
this gave me chills.
firstly, that song is a MASTERPIECE.
and...this was definitely the best year of canadian idol.
i miss CI2.
That was an epic performance then and still is today !!
Greatest Canadian Idol group performance ever!! Hearts the violin playing by Kalan ....
A beautiful homage to Gordon Lightfoot and one of the best songs ever recorded.
They have done sweet justice to Gordon Lightfoots trilogy. One of the very best.
I knew long ago that the Canadian Idol contestants performed "The Canadian Railroad Trilogy", but hadn't seen it until now. This is an overall amazing performance! It blew me away how much Kalan Porter (of my hometown of Medicine Hat) matched the wavering vocals of Gordon Lightfoot. The female performers were at a bit of a disadvantage with the pitch of the song and had to jump between octaves, but they hung in there nice and tight. Everyone brought something substantive to the song.
And the original song and its lyrics are so good, rail expert and author Pierre Berton once told Lightfoot that he'd summarized all of his books on the history of the Canadian railways in this one song. It even has the tempo of a locomotive; traveling fast on the flats, slowly on the mountains and hills, and triumphantly as it winds its way to its West Coast destination and the Last Spike.
It gives me an idea what the "navvies" (the UK railroad builders) must've lived through to create the tracks that opened up so much of Canada. The backbreaking work, the natural hazards like biting insects and muskeg (Canada's version of quicksand), being so far from their families, and all that.
I wish Canada's railways were still as proud and busy as they once were, but we've missed the train, so to speak. They still haul goods, but that's about all; wen other nations were upgrading to super-fast passenger carriers, we were cutting VIA Rail through the bone. (How fantastic would it be to, say, travel cross-country on the vast Prairies and Canadian Shield at 300+ kph, all while still being able to see its natural beauty all around?) The accidents of late, like Lac Megantic, show how much we've neglected this important, historic method of transportation. Maybe we'll find a way to turn those old veins of steel into swift arteries of commerce and conveyance once again.
(Besides, the jet age is no longer glamorous and increasingly Spartan, unless you have money to burn to fly executive-class on Emirates, British Airways, or something. Rail travel would need security, of course, but it'd provide a nice balance of speed and luxury. Make friends, play games, sightsee, have decent meals and drinks, use good bathrooms to clean up, and fall sleep to a soft hum or click in a compact bunk. I'd love it.)
Eh, I'm a big dreamer...
Sean Wilkinson nice post. I’ve camped as a child, worked aboard ships as an adult, but the best sleep I’ve ever had was the few times I had a top bunk on our trains.
Well even Neil Young said that Gordon is the best songwriter that ever was in any culture
I'm not Canadian but I have great respect for your country and its people. I love this song so much, and I'm so impressed by how this was performed - very true to form for Gordon. Thank you, Canada, for bringing us this music.
Not often do I like the rendition better, but this was an incredible performance... And a great season on Canadian Idol - I don't think they've had a group with chemistry like this since. Wonderful. Beautiful. And Canadian!
Oh, Sweet Jesus, this beats Yank Idol Seven Ways ta Sunday... Youngsters, thanks so very, very much. This music rescued me when I was a kid. 68 now.
Very well put together video! Lightfoot paints pictures with words and you set them in the mind with pictures.
Haul out the superlatives: this was a masterpiece. The finest CI group number ever, and quite possibly the finest anywhere ever. Thanks for putting this up. :)
This was always one of my favorite songs of Lightfoot's, a great, epic song suite...
I was in the audience that night... it was so moving. This, to me, was THE best Canadian Idol show ever.
What a gift...no...a TREASURE Lightfoot has given humanity. His music will live for many generations to come.
The best I've heard on any "Idol" show!! So glad I found this!! Lightfoot looks proud:):)
Awesome! My favorite Lightfoot tune...I think....I love so many of them!
Chills... after 16 years... we shall not likely see the likes of these young people together again
There have been about 200 covers of the song -- everyone from John Mellencamp to Rank & File -- but this one ranks near the top for me. It really was an emotional night given just two years before, Lightfoot almost died.
RIP Mr. Lightfoot.
Amazing, always loved this song!!!
So good it brought chills.
14 year's On! Brilliant...
Thank U. one & all, you
have all ment a great deal
to me & my life you were
all an inserpation 2 me
then as now, hope your
all doing well, Bless U all.
Rock Mr. "G" & all the great
music you shared with us.
the whole top ten that year was amazing
The best Canadian Idol show. The best Canadian Idol season. The best Canadian Idol top six. Thanks for posting. You made my day.
These guys and gals were EXCELLENT and did the great man proud! fantastic performance! Hilary
I happened to come across this because I missed the US X factor this week. All of these kids have stronger voices than just about anyone I've seen on US or UK talent shows - X Factor, got talent, Idol or the voice. Send this to your friends in US and UK ( and Australia). Amazing showcase for all, including GL and his music.
Thank you thank you thank you. I had all of this season until my computer crashed. This is one of my favourites! Hugsssss
Thank you so much for this video - the memories it brings! I watched this season and Jacob was my favourite. He brought so much fun on the show like no one did in any Idol franchise - week after week everyone looked forward to what he was going to sing, do, and wear LOL I love the blue suit for the Bowie number. He came in 3rd - but he is the most successful from this group. Hedley is an amazing band and Jacob is a brilliant songwriter as well.
It was awesome of Gordon Lightfoot to come see Kalan in concert when he performed at Massey Hall.
Im proud to say Im half Canadian and spent a lot of years in Canada, the Canadians DO have some amazing singers, a lot of which you dont hear of.I to wish Canadian Idol was shown here,
Hilary
I may be American, but this was a pretty sweet performance. I don't know that I'm much of a fan of Jacob's voice for this type of group number, but overall I found this very enjoyable. Combining it with old footage of the railroad being constructed was a nice touch as well.
I love that CI was the first Idol show to let the singers play their instruments. The rest followed.
Canadian idol was the first to allow the contestants to play their instruments. Its too bad they didn't continue the show, always thought the talent was great but this was by far my favorite season, never get tired of this
WOOHOO i love gordon lightfoot iv grown up lissaning to his music
Canadian Idol was always a lot more interesting than American Idol imho... I found it to be a lot more authentic and somehow they were always able to get more contemporary and not as cookie-cutter popstar song selections for the contestants. Never forgot about this performance and it's nice to see it again. Thanks for uploading. :)
What do you know, musicians who actually play instruments (many of them more than one), on a reality show? I'd like to see the karaoke singers of American Idol top that!
awesome version!!!!
Thank you Gordon, I miss you
Wow, so Canadian Idol actually has people with musical talent (as opposed to a bunch of karoke singers like the U.S. version). Also Gordon Lightfoot is the the VERY best!
Still a masterpiece, eighteen years later.
WHAT! That was great!!!
This is really well done. Gordan promoters he has had since he started live in Omaha, NE so we get to see him often. I have seen Gordan in concert at least 4 times and the guy who plays the fiddle sounds just like Gordan. I would pay to see that guy in concert as a tribute show playing Gordan's music. His music always sweeps me away to another place he is truly amazing.
Craig D b
What a great song
This rocks! wouldnt have thought it could have been an 'idol' show. Well done Canada...and GL of course
Well well well done! Gave me goosebumps.
This is SERIOUSLY AWESOME, everyone did a fabulous job!!
What I wish is that the first singer would perform the entire song.
Best Season of CI
@94donnacone Jacob - just performed at the olympic closing ceremonies with his band Hedley. Kalan - working on his third album... slowly, lol. Theresa - two albums, still doing gigs and such. Jason - second album came out last Sept.. Shane - self-made albums with his wife and had a couple kids. Elena - went the theatre acting route.
Gordon Lightfoot is a national treasure
That was a great group performance.
thanks! i had to listen to this song formy homework it helped a lot!!!
Masterpiece, that's it, that's what it is :)
this should be our national anthem
thanks for posting! i loved this performance!
I tried to pick which voice I loved the best and couldn't. They are all incredible vocalists
started idols allowed to play instruments ...... set canada apart very unique humble talented musicians well done uniquely canadian
Wow! That curly headed kid (Kalan Porter?) sounds almost identical to GL! Great performance. Never seen anything this cool on American Idol. With one exception, the girl on Mandolin never played. Someone mentioned this in an earlier post.
That was grand!
I wish they would air international Idols. The only reason I saw some of CI in the States is because I was going to college close to the border and got CTV.
@94donnacone The one with ACADIA on his shirt is Jacob Hoggard who is now the front man for a Canadian band name HEDLEY.. Can check him out here on YT..
The CBC has an archive of Gordon Lightfoot performing this same song on January 1, 1967. BTW Gordon Lightfoot is from Orillia, Ontario.
Very nice work my friends
Einfach wunderbar!
Make sure you all watch CTV Regina if you have a sattelite dish... this is our song as this town wouldn't be here otherwise.... Hudson Bay Jucntion was the town beforre... but we still have the train junction to Churchill and to Hudson Bay....... Monday June 7th at 6PM Alberta time. 7 pm Manitoba to ... CTV Regina is coming and I want all to be as excited as I am!
Gord is a living legend.
Yes. You can see it at 0:55 to 0:58 and again from 4:21 to 4:25.
Awesome singing! :)
GO KALAN
CI2 is the best Idol season from any country to date. Love love love loooove
That's cool... Canadian Idol rocks. Can you image something like this on American Idol? American Idol sucks.
Of course I've heard the original!!
I knew it before I even watched this show- Im a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan.
Well, whatever, agree to disagree, because I think they ALL did a fantastic job.
this is fun
They should come together to do this again on Parliament Hill for July 1st- oh wait that show on the Hill got canceled this year. . .
definately have to be from the Canada to sing this song, dont take that persoanlly i`m from Minnesota,i love my neighbors to the north!
Oh so true!
Hilary
Canada is so cool
@MrSatchboogie33 seems everyone has covered him at least once in their career. this was an amazing cover in my opinion
They jacked it up.
Should be the Canadian National Anthem! Cheers to Gordon and Canada!
from an American.
Super Canadian
I think it was Jason G off mic setting the rest of them up for the next part of the song.
Jason Greeley has not stop and in the west and got signed by a record Company
@Picardy : Yes! ;-)
can any body tell me what happened to those singers they sounded really good. i hope they all got contracts.
I'm now moving to Canada....
omg jake play the guitar here is so amazing not to mention hot!
Was that Gordon lightfoot in teh crowd?
@Picardy : I completely agree. The screaming would detract from the performance for me.
