So I'm in a desert environment. Not much severe, but definitely plenty of cold days. I keep an extra pair of wool socks and gortex socks in my car. If it gets cold, and/or wet, i just throw the old ones off, new dry ones on with the liners and I'm good to go again. Definitely a regional tip, but it's worked for me. Also always be prepared for worse than you think.

I run taller boots or regular boots with a gator. I frequently am running around homes with 2/3 ft of snow. A lower boot will allow snow in.

Great video as always. Thankfully it doesn’t get that cold where I am (although this also means no issued cold weather gear for when it’s cold enough that you do start to have problems).
If you’re cheap like me and not in a properly cold area, I’ve found that throwing on some sweatpants that you probably already have under your uniform trousers can help a decent amount for no real hassle or cost.

Gloves, socks, balaclavas and ears bags are lifesavers. Never wear double socks. That makes the numbing worse. I was a bike messenger in a big city during many polar vortexes and storms before getting on the job.

Suggestion for the guy with the LBV.
Get a good fleece or other mid layer, wear it under the vest. Makes a big difference.

  • @Yugophoto
    @Yugophoto 5 років тому +1

pyjama pants under your duty pants and over your thermal underwear acts like a fleece sweater for your legs.
those thin dollar store gloves fit pretty well under most slash resistant duty gloves if you just need a layer of insulation but you still need slash resistance.
If you don't have winter weight socks available, doubling up your socks can do in a pinch. Also, get wool socks. Cotton when wet is useless, wool when wet still has some insulative properties.
Get cheap, thin gloves and multiple toques and leave them in the pockets of your different jackets if you have multiple jackets so you never get caught without gloves or a hat.
Keep a pen close to your body so it stays warm.

If you're going for a shoe with high ankle support, I would recommend finding some boot that has some give in the high ankle area. Something that is semi flexible while maintaining waterproofness and durability.
My current boots are 5.11 boots but they are very stiff above the ankle. So my shins and calf are sore after using them on a busy night.

Great, informative video as always. I share your channel with all new hires for tips. Years ago, I learned so many simple tricks from you.
How do you or your department juggle teaching new officers all of these little tips, the regular FTO process, & taking calls?
I find it challenging when training to teach some of these valuable tips like note taking, plus how to handle the calls, officer tactics, reports, paperwork & still taking new calls. It seems to run late each night or take all day to break down 1 call.

Couldn't agree more about the boots. Whatever team or unit you work in, if your feet are screwed up then the rest of you is screwed up. Buy good quality insulated leather boots and look after them. Regular applications of polish or whatever leather waterproofing 'stuff' you prefer. Look after your boots and your boots will look after you. 2nd point: get a good watch cap, preferably made of a material that will still keep your head warm even if the cap gets wet e.g. wool.

What is this """snow""" stuff yer talkin' about, fella? I ain't ever heard of this strange thing...
In all seriousness, if you're in the South chances are you're not going to get snow but plenty of freezing rain during the winter. I keep a spare pair of SmartWool socks and some foot powder to sprinkle on when changing socks. I have some leftover thermal stuff from my time doing wilderness survival/exploration that easily slip on under my uniform, which will also be very useful since I'm going for a reserve Sheriff deputy position. I generally like to wear them underneath covert body armor, and that helps keep me insulated during the winter working 3rd shift. I also wear high boots or full on jack boots. (I recently bought a pair of Finnish surplus jack boots from Varusteleka which I've been liking, but those HAIX boots are real great. I am not military and I never will be, but the exmilitary guys turned security or police who I've worked with love their Rocky S2Vs.) I buy those bulk packs of hot hands as well, when it's dry but cold I toss a pair of them into my boots. They're worth their weight in gold.
Appreciate the glove tips though, my LawPro gloves have gotten real shredded and I'll be needing a new pair very soon.
