A note about _The Faceless Ones_ release: they've animated all 6 episodes, but the original live action versions of episodes 1 and 3 still exist.

As an interesting note, Michael Craze drops the "cockney" accent when playing the controlled Ben.

The animation helps this story as they didn't have the budget to make the large Macra act as they do here. Love it! The 2nd Doctor and Jaime are my 2nd favorite duo. They are fantastic together and play off each other perfectly. You'll see.

True, i prefer the black and white animation since it matches the audio quality more.

I'm super glad you loved 'The Macra Terror' since I always thought it was kinda underrated amongst the rest of the Second Doctor Era. Can't wait to see you react to 'The Faceless Ones' next, which I also find to be a highly underrated story that has a lot of fascinating concepts within it.

You have to remember that Jamie wasn't written for in this season the start of next season the writers really flesh out his character a lot more, starting with Evil of the Daleks

The animation of The Faceless Ones has two very subtle hints towards a certain future characters. These hints were not present in the original live action because obviously the characters weren't created yet.

Hi Jess, I love that as a modern day Whovian, you enjoy the Classic Who stories as much as you do. :) Sadly, such a lot of new Whovians don`t even want to try & experience them. I hope, you are feeling a lot better now.

This is a great story it’s very underrated I’ve always loved it. The animation is fantastic on this one as well also please remember to watch the surviving episodes of the next story as they animated all episodes so you know 1&3 exists episodes 2&4-6 are animated

I'm so happy you like Ben and this episode on the whole. :) I just watched it myself and I think it's a really good one.
I agree with you about the animation; it's really smooth, everyone looks great and they've stopped trying to make things match up exactly and started having some fun with it (like the scenes where the Macra pick Polly up or drag the Controller away). I feel like someone who likes animated movies but isn't into Doctor Who could even watch this and enjoy it.
    Enjoy your week off! :)

Mad how effortlessly Classic Who manages having 3 companions compared to the latest series of New Who.
Feels like they all had something to do in this story, and the guest characters still had more than enough screen time to establish themselves.

Well I mean classic who episodes are usually *at least* twice as long as new who eps are. Obviously Classic Who's sort of format wouldn't work with modern television but it sucks the sorts of things we lose by not having it

@@bcheeseey but even if you look at the 2 episodes in this video - which run for about as long as one episode of New Who.
You've got Ben getting brainwashed and betraying the rest of the crew.
Jamie and Polly get captured and sent to work - Jamie escapes and ends up fighting the Macra before being captured again, Polly stays captured for the 2 episodes.
Meanwhile the Doctor starts inspiring a revolution amongst the guest characters.
The guest characters themselves split into 2 groups - those that side with the Dr and those who don't - one side constantly cast as antagonists, chasing Jamie down, keeping Polly prisoner, brainwashing Ben and trying to shut down the Dr's influence.
      Everyone has their own storyline.
Compared to the last episode of the latest series where the Dr is captured and learns about her own & Gallifreys past while the Master monologues at her.
Meanwhile the 3 companions team up with the guest characters to fight the Cybermen -
Graham comes up with the idea of hiding in the Cyber-suits so he, Yas, and 2 guest characters can escape from the Cyber-ship.
Ryan is on the planet with other resistance fighters and throws a bomb, overcoming his disability which affects his coordination sometimes.
And Yas is there too, Graham says some nice things to her in a touching scene.
And that's in one of the better New Who episodes at balancing 3 companions.
If you go back and treat this as a 2-3 part New Who story (which it is) Yas somehow seems to do even less.

They also weren't all introduced at once, as well as a new Doctor. They kind of phase them in and out more. The companions are definitely more prominent now than they were as characters -probably very minorly starting now with Jamie I suppose

  • @meropetied
    @meropetied 4 роки тому +9

Note Jamie is still poorly developed. This script was another adapted to include him late in the day. But also note that he gets lots of fun stuff to do without words. If only we could see it all. Still, just great animation here compared to so much else in the missing episode reconstructions.

I've pre -ordered The Faceless Ones (up until this point I've only seen episodes 1 and 3 as they make up the only surviving footage of this story) so I'm really looking forward to it (it's estimated to be delivered on 16th March) & to your coverage of it!

It's a bummer the last few moments aren't animated and the episode cuts out a few lines early. According to a transcript I've read (www.chakoteya.net/DoctorWho/4-7.htm), after the Doctor says "let's get out of here," [The last line of the animation] Ben asks "Yes, but how?" and the Doctor responds with "Take a leaf out of Jamie's book. Give them the old dance routine!" Apparently, this is followed by "The Doctor, Polly, Jamie, and Ben dancing enthusiastically, slowly moving closer to the door." Iconic.
But, hey, at least we got to see Jamie's highlander fling animated!

Fun fact when I first watched this - When the Doctor wrote 11 out of 10, my mind immediately went "Oh that's cool, one more connection to the 11th Doctor in my book from the 2nd Doctor himself, even though it's just one small thing. Matt would be proud". Now it's possibly one of my favourite unintentional nods in Doctor Who every time I see this episode.

Let me try again, since apparently this comment has so many spoilers that I need to tag it with *spoilers* or something.
Ben Jackson is such a wasted companion.
He was introduced in The War Machines, and his main purpose was going to be to do all the physical stuff William Hartnell wouldn't be able to do.
I think this hits its peak in The Tenth Planet when he's tampering with the technology, and that other jerk throws him over the railing. (Imagine him doing that to poor Willian Hartnell!)
However, once William Hartnell was replaced by Patrick Troughton, Ben kind of became redundant.
And then once Jamie came along, Ben officially became useless.
I like how here they made some use out of him, even if it was just to be affected by the mind-control. And he does blow-up The Macra in the end, which is nice.
Polly and Ben are going to leave very soon. (It shouldn't matter if that's a spoiler, since Seskasays isn't going to be reacting to it Anyway it seems)
Ben was fine with leaving, as he knew he hadn't really had any character-devlopment. Polly was actually asked to stay with Jamie, but the actress declined claiming it felt right that since they came together, they should leave together.
Polly and Ben's exit is probably one of the worst exits for companions ever though, beaten only by Dodo.
Jamie is in it for the long-haul. Jamie rocks!
Hey, if anyone's interested, I'm reviewing all the Doctor Who stories on my channel, with me just having uploaded my review of: 'Planet of the Spiders (1974)!' No pressure, of-course; It just might be worth checking out! :)

I don't know where that last comment you wrote went so I'll reply here.
Giving a plot summary of any level of detail to an upcoming episode is absolutely a spoiler. If you're indicating you did this before and it wasn't deleted or commented on, then it was an oversight.
You're saying this is their final story because they barely feature in the next - how is Jessica to know this? You've just told her, so how can that *not* be a spoiler? I feel like you don't understand the very basic meaning behind that word. It's very simple - if you're discussing episodes beyond the one you're watching her react to, then it's a spoiler. This has been the rule for years now, but I don't really recognise your username so perhaps you're new'ish.
If you want to give your trivia then go ahead - but just do it on the actual reactions themselves, like everyone else does.
      Thanks.

@@markmckeown87 I didnt spoil anything. All I said was they were leaving: 'Very Soon.' I never said which story. Everyone else jumped in and started talking about how it was a spoiler for me saying they would leave eventually.

@@markmckeown87 I agree. But that only happened because everyone started to reply to me. The original comment never had anything that was a spoiler. I felt attacked like I needed to defend myself. It was like people were saying I was a horrible person.
I already have depression and suicidal thoughts. My 1 big dream is UA-cam, and now even that has become a war-zone. I'm literally crying right now as I type this.
I'm sorry. I guess you were just doing what you thought was right. But everyone else really hurt me and I don't feel inclined to check this channel out ever again.
So, I guess I'm sorry for doing such a horrible thing.

      @markmckeown87 4 роки тому +1

@@carealoo744 UA-cam is a war zone even at the best of times, and people will jump down each others' throats. I think people care a great deal about Jess' reactions and want to keep as much from her as possible. When you don't know anything at all, it makes for greater reactions. Trust me, what you said is nothing in comparison to what some idiots say!
Don't not watch or comment just because of this. Like I said before, if you're commenting on the current episode or anything before then you can say what you want. If you want to comment on anything from the following episode on wards, just tag it with **spoilers** or something, that's what a lot of other people do.
No need to apologise, it happens, but sorry if it's caused you some mental anguish. We're good people here and anyone who commented is just trying to protect Jess from potential spoilers, big or small. I'm sure you can understand.
      Feel better.
