Mastering Transformer Winding Resistance: Insider Tips and Tricks
Winding resistance measurements in transformers are of fundamental importance for the following purposes:
Calculations of the I2R component of conductor losses.
Calculation of winding temperature at the end of a temperature test cycle.
As a diagnostic tool for assessing possible damage in the field.
In addition to the obvious faulted winding, such as an open winding or shorted turn, the test reveals more subtle problems. The DC current not only flows through the winding of the device under test, but also through numerous welded and mechanical connections. In the case of a transformer, the DC current must also flow through the off-load adjusting switch (RA) an on-load ratio adjusting switch (load tap changer or LTC). Therefore, the integrity of all these components can be verified.
