Is the West Stuck in a Cycle of Revolution and Discontent?

  • I’m spending the month in Budapest, Hungary, and I had a conversation with a Dutch sociologist, Eric Hendricks, who suggested that, since the French Revolution, the West has been trapped in a cycle of fervor, terror, and disillusionment-or what he calls the “modernity loop.” In his theory, Western societies, including the United States, have relentlessly pursued equality, only to be disappointed when those movements collapse into violence. Is the woke revolution, which peaked after the death of George Floyd, part of this pattern? And can Western societies escape the loop?

Because Marxism sees everything in terms of power relationships, racism is only racism when a group they label as oppressors exercises power over a group labeled as oppressed. When the tables are turned on the oppressors that’s not racism in the eyes of the Marxist but justice.

@@brianmeen2158 Asleep. They hear "anti-racist" and take it at face value without looking into what they mean when they say it (anti-miscegination, segregation, ending equality under the law, ending race-blind hiring/funding/benefits, doing away with anti-discrimination practices, etc.). They are just easily fooled people who are too quick to signal virtue without having any clue what they're supporting because the con-artists know how to hide their ideology and know it must be hidden since they know nobody would agree with them if they were open and honest.

James Lindsay has detailed this at length. He has been speaking about Gnosticism and new age theological movements.

We have abandoned our Christian religious roots which is much of our societal foundations which is important because secularism has no transcendent meaning, so people then resort to nihilism and as Nietzsche said that leads on to totalitarianism as people cannot abide nihilism in stability long. I believe Men have forgotten God as Solzhenitsyn said. Secularism has led to Nihilism & Hedonism. Globalism has led to the end of economic, border, cultural insecurity. Finally, Multiculturalism has led to lower public community trust.
These total issues have been a caustic mixture to family values & the family itself. If we do not return to a semblance of Christendom (social & political morals not necessarily forced religion), return to regional economies (that adequately employ two parent families), and a unified cultural identity value, we as a people will not likely survive & we will get more dysfunctional as families, societies and politicly as we descend further down the spiral of decay.

Having a leadership class for whatever reason is still an aristocratic class. What they wanted was the abolition of hereditary aristocratic rule. Many aristocrats were well educated and had connections that aided them to institute laws and maintain order that assisted growth. However, the offspring of some of these aristocrats were not well suited to rule. The ruling class was a closed system which caused resentment among those who could see that they were better suited for a leadership role than someone who just automatically received it because of their birth. However, even some who had the right to rule did not want to rule so there were openings for others, just not enough for some people like Jefferson.

When it comes to the race issue, I’m more relaxed because I can see it’s cyclical nature. CRT isn’t exactly new, it was advocated in various forms in the 60s by people like Malcom X and the Black Panthers, but petered out in the 70s. Affirmative action has never really been accepted by a majority of the American people, despite powerful forces pushing for it, and there’s a high likelihood it will be made illegal by SCOTUS.
My fear is more on the LGBT issue. Unlike African Americans, that were genuinely oppressed in the past and still have some legitimate grievances today, I see the LGBT movement as basically a victimhood construct. Also unlike on the issue of race where it ebbs and flows, it’s virtually been non-stop victory for the LGBT agenda, with ever greater public support. The complete denial of reality with transgenderism has no historical precedent and is extremely dangerous.

There is a difference between “LGBTQ”, “gay”, “lesbian”, “bisexual”, “transgender”, and “queer”. The left views all of these things as equivalents which they are not. Gay, lesbian and bisexual are sexual orientations. Transgenderism is the view that gender identity determines sexual identity. Queer is a political ideology that sees normalizing every sexual deviation as necessary to lay the foundations for radical social change, i.e. socialism. Not all gay, lesbian and bisexual people believe in the political stances of transgenderism and queer theory. The lumping together of all these things skews the lens of how these groups are viewed.

    Rufo.
It is refreshing to see that some one somewhere in the world is trying to see and understand the persuit of equality as a cycle.
I have been thinking about that myself a lot.
Persuit of equality seems to such a noble cause that we all get caught in it for most of our young lives. It takes a life time to see how it’s a trap that has been laid for us all in each generation to make socialists of us all. Who ever said that those who are not democrats when young have no heart and those who do not turn republicans when older have no brain should have pharaswd the sentence ina different way.
Whe entrap the young to become democrats by luring them to fight for equality. When the finally realize that it was a trap and equality is impossible to achieve, we loose them to republicans but by this time we have whole new generation entrapped to fight for equality.

This isn't a very new idea. Its only new if you're a modern at heart. But traditional people see things as cycles like seasons. This is very old way of thinking going back to Vedic traditions and its progeny: Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, etc. They have cycles with cycles.
The thing about conservatives is they are part of modernity just as liberals are. They are basically the same. Neither can stand outside of modernity. And modernity is all about freedom... But freedom from what? Freedom from tradition, duty, properness, order, beauty, family, and eventually even our bodies themselves.
Freedom in leads to loneliness, isolation, and depression.
So, if you're a conservative and seek freedom as the highest value then you are opposed to tradition, family, and body because these all are barriers to freedom.

One of the weaker videos by Chris. The cycle he describes is too simplistic. For example, what exactly does the 'stabilization' phase mean? In some of the examples he gives it means a return to conservative policies (Nixon). In the current situation it seems to mean stopping the excesses of rioting, but a complete woke transformation of bureaucracies, schools, universities, business, etc. Yes, it's a stabilization of sorts, but in a way that it indicates a win of the original woke ideology. Thus, in addition to the revolution-stabilization cycle it matters how ideas develop during this cycle and, in particular, which ideas are behind the stabilization phase.
