  • Jenna Ortega is facing some backlash. During an appearance on Dax Shepard's hit podcast "Armchair Expert," the "Wednesday" star admitted that she would change scripts of the Netflix series without telling writers. "There were times on that set where I even became almost unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines," she shared, which resulted in some social media backlash.

To me, it seems less like a dig at the writers and more like an artist protecting the character that the director cast her to play. There has to be some level of trust in the person portraying that character, especially with someone like Wednesday Addams. You know damn well the show would have fallen in line with every other teen drama if she didn’t speak up.

I'm honestly glad she changed the scrip. I don't think she meant anything towards the writers, I think she's just a perfectionist wanting to help. People will take anything and turn it against someone in an instant. Jenna is so honest and humble; she doesn't deserve any of that nonsense.

Yes, but you have to agree not running any ideas by writers, producers, or directors is not the best way to behave when you already have a great opportunity.
It’s a good thing the set was actor friendly and open to riffing.

She didn't flat out change the script. If you actually listen to what she said, she went to the writers and suggested the character wouldn't say that particular line, or wouldn't react in that particular way...
Actors do that that all the time. They're the ones preparing for the role, they're acting, they become that character, meaning the character becomes real to them, it's an actual person. She's felt Wednesday would never have said that line as it was too emotional, and too 'human'. She's brought it to the writers attention and clearly everyone has agreed, or we'd have heard that line in the show.
This really just shows how easily something can taken out of all context and twisted to suit a given narrative. Writers have huge egos, not only that, they're delicate little flowers, so it's no surprise to see that writer react like that to what was said. He's taken the wrong end of the stick entirely though. Unsurprisingly.

This is so weird... Since the beginning, there are interviews where she ALREADY SAID she re-wrote some of the scripts and change some aspects of the show and as the result, Wednesday's character ended up better written. So, why only now people talk about it??? The changes were the exact scenes we've seen on the show! And yes, Jenna was right about some of the things Wednesday would never say! Those lines were too cheesy.
And if was what ended up in the show, it meant the writers and the directors agreed to it. Besides, she was right when she said it was weird for Wednesday to be in love-triangle when she barely able to feel any emotions until later when she does have character's arc etc and developed along with the story.
People and social media are so weird these days... I hope Jenna is doing better...

Some of the worst moments in every Netflix show us when they use "teen lingo to seem relatable"even when 1. Nobody talks like that, or 2. It doesn't make sense for the character. Like Enid had a line like "you should totally get on insta, snapchat, and tiktok", and her whole "howdy roomie!" thing. Both times, I literally paused the show and had a moment of shock because of how horrible the teen dialogue was. I'm not saying she knows better than seasoned writers but she is Gen z. She's only 20, she's practically a teenager herself and she knows how people her age talk. Same with the character, who is sheltered/old fashioned and doesn't identify with people her age. Idk the show was pretty good but I probably never would have rewatched it if she hadn't gone ahead and changed the script

"Sheesh she claims to know better than the writers and Tim Burton."
If she actually can back up the work then yes, yes she does. Its all for the work and you're lucky she even cared about her work because clearly some of the writers arent respecting what theyre working with and think too highly of themselves. The writing process is brutal as it should because otherwise you're doing a huge disservice to everyone else in production. Rule number of production is always have a good script to work with. If the result and writing can be done so easily and impromptu or be easily foreseen by your audience and make them bored, the writer isnt doing their work properly. How come its okay for writers to be given more lee way and special treatment while other roles have to compensate and get the shorter end of the stick in this industry. Most of the shows produced technically were well made however much are dragged down by the poor writing. So its only right writers be given more of a closer eye because the whole thing literally depends on them.
