  • Staying warm in winter with a beach walk may seem counterintuitive, however it really is warm enough to explore the beaches down here so warm up your cocoa or coffee (or grab a brandy) and let's visit the beach and see what is out there today.

    Thank you for speaking up and saving that animal. ❤ Soon after I moved down here, my partner and I came across a grown man kicking around a calico crab on the beach. I went after him in a rage and told him exactly why what he was doing was terribly wrong. He didn't care one bit, but it hurts my heart to see people so willing to hurt or kill these innocent animals.

    I have felt so bad for years now. When I was younger I found a star fish and I had no idea about any sea creatures. It was alive and died because of my ignorance. I apologize to the sea and have cried about this. I just had to tell everybody this. But because of maturity and your channel I have learned so much from you and I will always know now what to look for at the Beach!❤️

      Oh dear beach friend, it was a mistake. I am going to make a video about our sea creatures to try to help educate people. Your mistake was an honest one. Lots of people are told to leave creatures at the beach and they take them home anyway 🥲

    Well that was a fantastic day at the beach for sure! Soooo many treasures’ that sun ray Venus is a gorgeous find and yep wow beautiful shark eye!! Woot woot! I have to say it is appalling how some people treat live creatures. When I visited fort Myers at the end of August I had a run in with a gentleman who decided to throw the biggest crown I had ever see like it was a baseball. Literally brought tears to my eyes and boy did that guy get it from me. The next day at low tide I happened to run across said crown conch and he was still alive and well, I walked him out as far as I could. So anyway I hear what you are saying and how frustrating and sad it can be. It’s awesome you take time in every video to stress leaving live critters at the beach 💕

    It looked like the perfect day for being down on the beach, especially my favourite Fort Myers Beach!! You found so many good ones like so many. The big shell you found I just have to know what to look for like he said it was the spikes sticking up out of the sand and you thought it might be a big one and it was an excellent find.
    But I’m like you, I love those moons snails, and I can’t believe the size of the Paul Newman moon snail that you found, good for you !!
    Thanks for standing up that person that just wanted to destroy the living being in that shell. It really really gets me that people are that ignorant of life that things like ones that live in shells mean nothing and I find tolerating people in society like that hard sometimes . You just wonder what’s in that chest of theirs because they certainly don’t have a heart.

    I had been wondering about "tossing" the live shells back into the water. I will be in FL 10 days from now and I would not toss any out into the ocean since I had never seen you do that, but I was wondering if live shells can ever be fatally upside down? This might be a dumb question to ask, but I wondered if some critters like the lightening welks are strong enough to flip themselves back over or not especially if one is stuck in a hole or a depression in the sand with their opening exposed. I know tortoises and sheep if found upside down (on their backs) will die if someone doesn't flip them back over right away. Edit: I suppose the birds would get to them too easily so the answer is...yes???

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  8 місяців тому +1

      Most of the squishy critters have an operculum that will protect them from predators if they are left "upside down." This trap door (operculum) also seals in moisture as the creature waits for the tide to come back. Yes, creatures can get stranded, but for the most part that really only happens during storms. During a normal low-high tide cycle, the snails manage to wait it out if they get stuck. Which is why I give them a little help when I can 😃

    • @babs629
      @babs629 8 місяців тому

    Always love your videos. We like to take shelling vacations to the gulf coast. Used to stay on Sanibel. Last year we went to Marco. This year we are looking for a house big enough for 8. I found a vrbo on the very south end of Estero Island right across from Lovers Key. Is that a good place to shell? In this video you said you liked to shell in that part of Fort Myers Beach. Exactly what part do you think is the best?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  4 місяці тому

      If where you are staying is by the bridge from Estero Island to Lovers Key it's a fabulous place to shell! Now getting on over to the beach is another story. There is no proper access down there. Last time I went I was going to walk under the bridge, but it's. under construction so I changed my mind. I had to walk up the street and trespass on someone's property that has no home on the lot right now. Before you rent, ask where the beach access is. It's a GREAT location for shelling but you need proper/safe beach access.

    • @brendalunsford2530
      @brendalunsford2530 4 місяці тому

      It is right on the beach…sort of. But it is about 400 yards from the house to the water. At least according to the photos there is a very big sandy area right on the end of the island the rental is only a few houses from the bridge. It is a white hexagon/octagon house with a blue roof. Maybe you have seen it.

      Thank you for your input. I have passed the information onto the rest of my family. The downside is there’s no pool or hot tub at that location there which the family would like. And it’s more expensive than some of the places we were looking at in Cape Coral. How is the parking on the south end of Estero island? Even if we don’t pick that house and we stay in Cape Coral I was wondering how easy it would be to park so we could go shelling on the end of the island?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  4 місяці тому

      @@brendalunsford2530 There is ZERO legal public parking on the south end of the island. You will have a few challenges getting there, but you could take the trolley or Uber there and back. Thank you for your beach walks. I took my 26 year old daughter to the area you were shelling for her first shell trip last week. It was fun to watch her find different shells. She also loved helping me find garbage on our walk. I was surprised by the number of people who just walked by the garbage. We had a wonderful girls trip and now are back to the snow.😂

    Update on our Brody who had a cancerous tumor removed from his leg…we will be starting radiation therapy tomorrow and will continue daily M-F for the next two weeks. The Radiation Oncologist has run several tests for confirmation on the cancer type, drew more blood chemistry, did chest Xrays and an abdominal ultrasound to make sure the cancer hasn’t spread. It’s all came back negative! Thank you to all who have sent up prayers for our fur baby! Without medical insurance we wouldn’t have been able to even think about this. Hi Sharmon! Thank you for this lovely video. I was stunned by most of those shells you found. That yellow sunray venus clam was incredible as was the giant horse conch and quahog. That one fighting conch with the zigzags on the knobs was so beautiful. I was wishing so much that I could have been walking with you on that beautiful beach. Yes, I'm one of the ones who got snow and ice this last week. I'd go snorkeling with you if I could. My dear late sister Leilani taught me how to snorkel when I was visiting her in Hawaii. So many beautiful fish and other wonders to see under there. God bless you and have a great week, my friend.

    UGG to the leaving live creators at the beach.
    I left 3 live Whelks and kinda displayed them for other shell picker to admire. The shells were already beached and tide was still going out. Later that day someone took them I guess to eat or their shells? Next time, I will definitely make sure they make it in the water.

    Thank you Sharmon for the once again great shelling day. I was just down at St.Pete’s the week right before Panama City had the tornadoes, and on the way home we stayed at Panama City Brach for four days. The bad thing about the trip was almost NO shells. One Frorida fighting conk but it had a critter in it, bummer. There was absolutely nothing!! I was so hoping for a beautiful calico scallop or juvenile Fl. fighting con, but just nothing. I found one crown conk, and about four olives that looked like they were made of cement because they were so rough, no shine. I did enjoy you finding that shark eye, wow!!

    Wow! A golden sunray! That's one I haven't seen. Very cool! There were a bunch of hinged spinies there! Darling little true! That was a nice big shark eye. Happy for you! As far as live shells, some days I feel like the beach police. Floridians have no excuse; visitors sometimes just don't know. And then there have been the "harvesters" looking specifically for live stuff to cook/eat. Fortunately I haven't seen as much of that lately, but after storms, I'm always on the lookout for them. You scored big again, girl at FMB! xxoo

      Harvesters? Oh that would drive me up a wall. There have been some comments about people that have had pretty nasty experiences with people at the beach. I think a majority are clueless. The mean people - well, I don't think there is much we can do about that. The clueless ones I'm going to work on!

I just returned to the Boston area after spending 3 glorious weeks in SW Florida. Can't get enough of the beaches and all that can be found there. This trip, I converted my almost 80 year-old father into a beach walker. Armed with a sand scooper that sometimes acted as a walking stick, he and I traversed a few miles of FMB beach together.
