Interesting. Kind of explains a lot actually. Went to my family reunion for my Mom’s side a few years back in western rural Montana and it really helped me understand my gene pool. We are all a fiercely independent lot whatever else we may or may not have in common. Montana is definitely a live and let live kind of place.

It happens in all aspects of people migrating somewhere new be it state, region or country. They try and make it like the place they are coming from and I have the same suggestion for all. If you want the place you are going to, to be like the place you are coming from- stay where you are. Then you won't have to make the place you going to be like where you're coming from!

As a lifelong PA resident but retired and lived in MT for 3 years and worked in state government in both states, I find MT government to be grossly inefficient and ineffective with their system. I am all for less government involvement but this system is truly inefficient for the reasons you mentioned, just to name a few. Politics are the same in every state as with MT. Those that are in office are only there to attend to their own agenda for how they can do for themselves and their families, ie; large ranchers and business owners. I saw the current Governor smeared in his first campaign as an “East Coast Millionaire” and it is widely known that “True Montanans” don’t care for outsiders trying to tell them what to do. What wasn’t widely offered was that, that candidate largely was a “True Montanan” and may have been born as an “East Coster” but lived in MT for a long time, raised his family in MT, started and made his “millions” in MT with MT labor. Hypocrisy truly annoys the shit out of me and I understand the realm I am speaking of but, get your heads out of your asses people and open your mind. Stop believing everything the left wing media tells you and look beyond the woods and see the trees! Sorry, I’ll get off my soapbox now…. The Governor has some good ideas to change things and help the “True Montanans” that LIVE in MT, not just own property and vacation there. Open your minds and give things a chance! 90 days every other year is totally reactive and completely inefficient and ineffective to say the least! Moderation may be a better way to look at it and maybe 90 days every year to start? Just don’t allow them to take advantage of it and abuse it like so many other states have done, including mine, PA!
Sorry to bore or anger you that was not my intent. Just giving you something to think about and venting anger of something I see as an injustice….
I miss MT every day but, we have to do for family what we have to do…. Take care of that state and don’t screw it up! Hopefully I will get back there as a resident one day. First though, they have got to get ride of that tax on retirements, pensions and social security!!!!!

I found it very interesting that the largest town in MT (Billings) voted red throughout. Normally, the larger the town the more blue. But then, usually the larger towns have more colleges in them and I don't think that there is a college in Billings.

What a great pl@ce. We had to move back to Utah for family reasons for a couple of years but we plan to move back to Montana soon.

As much as this is a free state, I do think it’s strange you have a state run liquor store and you can just pick up your vodka/whiskey without having to make an extra stop to a certain store. Don’t understand why they don’t let you just pick up your gin at costco/target/walmart/safeway

    • @montanastranger

Most All Bars sell hard alcohol. U can grab a bottle of whiskey to go.state liquor store all sell hard alcohol.
Costco isn't Montana so they don't profit.
Local bars and state taxes vs Costco and foreign corporations. Need i say more.

Simple answer, it provides revenue to the state coffers. Your choice, either buy your booze from the state store, or pay higher taxes on property etc.

When you realize that every law takes away a bit of your freedom, if you were chances to make more laws the better. Otherwise you get a 24/7 freedom reduction system in place like in California.

Montana has a state income tax ranging from 1.00 percent to 6.75 percent.. Montana has a 6.75 percent corporate income tax rate. Montana does not have a state sales tax. Property taxes average around $2000. Also registration fees. Light vehicles aged 0 to 4 years old pay an annual fee of $217, 5 to 10-year-old vehicles pay an annual fee of $87, those older than 11 years can choose to pay an annual fee of $28 or may choose to permanently register their vehicle for a onetime fee of $87.50, which essentially ages them out of the registration fee system. Counties may also impose a local option tax of up to 0.7% of the retail value of the vehicle.

Do Montana politics confuse you? GOOD! Look here folks.. Montanans are not all that hooked on political parties.. (but hey ya have a rally, we'll show for the beer and the BBQ!) And Monatanans don't always vote the party line. People count. At time it's down right shakesperian... all full of thunder and fury signifying nothing. Our comentator noted the counties with large Labor foces (and unions) and those with major native american population tend to vote democrat. This is a surprise how? Like the old naughty turist joke about the old native and the tender foot tourist who asked him why he said chance when in the movie the indians always said how. His reply, maam, indian already know how! Montana's not for for everyone. Give folk the benifit of a doubt. Grant them respect and courtasy and you'll get along just fine.
