Thank you for this Bill! You are 100% SPOT ON!!! Yes, I am a teacher. Proud to be one for the past 25 years. Most parents are trying to do their best, but there are some that are doing a huge disservice to their children and society at large by enabling their kids’ learned helplessness and fragility. Natural consequences teach kids how to be resilient and grow from these experiences. Thank you for every single word in this segment! I hope it resonates with those who need to hear this!

How is a school system that controls literally every minute of a kid’s school day not creating learned helplessness? I’m not saying parents aren’t doing it too, just that 13 years of obedience training don’t exactly encourage resilience and being a self-starter.

The daycare generation came of age and is now “parenting” but the thought of actually having to raise their own kids is terrifying to them.
The rapid decline in society wasn’t when parents began siding with kids, it’s when parents stopped parenting their own kids and become bulldozer karens when others don’t do it how they want.

Unfortunately, many parents are placating their kids with highly addictive digital devices to escape the rigors of parenting during Covid.
Even more unfortunate, remote learning can be a gateway to device addiction, even for parents and teachers who have been trying to hold the line on moderate use.
As a teacher, I think there is nothing more destructive to a young child's development than handing them their own phone or iPad and letting them free-range on the internet to pass the time. What's strange is many of the helicopter parents who make my life hell are doing just this. Taking their child's phone away during class because they literally can't put them down is seen as an act of violence to them.
The Netflix film, The Social Dilemma, presents this reality from the perspective of those that helped pioneer and engineer these addictive, predatory products. It was refreshing to see the subject of digital addiction and attention predation of young people discussed thoughtfully, without representing those of us who are concerned as being hysterical Luddites.

      5. They sometimes work in summer too (no pay)
      6. They only get paid 10 months of the year and if not tenured they aren’t guaranteed contract for following year

The only time my parents argued with a teacher is when they thought they weren't being hard enough on me. I learned the valuable lesson of never lying or exaggerating about a teacher, as I would lose all credibility when I needed to report a REAL instance of a teacher being inappropriate towards me.
As a cop, I definitely see this lacking in today's under 30s, as they have spent their entire youths being believed and catered to and now genuinely feel that ANYTHING they don't like should be taken seriously and dealt with by the Police.

steven cooke I’m a 90s kid and I already saw kids around me starting to have parents get mad when teachers didn’t give their kid a good grade. Also most of the kids were spoiled rotten.
After I left I heard how bad it had gotten at the school. I had a teacher who made us take detailed notes in class and said “the quizzes and tests will always be on material I tell you to write down.” It was an easy A: you knew what could be on the test so you studied it. Now the teacher starts handing out study guides. The notebooks we wrote were the study guides, I didn’t need anything else to get an A in the class. If your kid is failing in that class it’s probably not the teacher.

I probably have similar personal experience. My parents made it clear to me before secondary school (equivalent of middle school and high school combined) that they would side with the teachers.
They didn't know that the teachers would hand out detentions like sweets for every little thing.
However my parents got the impression that you must've done something truly awful in order to be given a detention. It was only put to the test once, because of a homework that was handed in one day late (I'd missed homeworks before, but those teachers were kind). What followed was three days of silent treatment, interrogation, guilt trips and shame. I'll remember the feeling in the pit of my stomach for years to come. I was later diagnosed with something meaning that internally, I handled such situations poorly, I certainly don't think my parents wanted me to feel the way I did.
If and when I have children, I'll bear all of that in mind, just in case they get "that" teacher. 90% of them are brilliant, and deserve more respect as you say, but there's always those few - and you remember the bad ones much more.

Quick story: I work hard 3 1/2 years in to my Elementary Education degree, looking forward to Student Teaching. First Middle School I am assigned to the Master Teacher is an old school tyrant teacher, no smiling till after Winter Break. I was taught (in 1989) a softer approach, and transferred to a Magnet School. Parents felt so entitled there. Kids were deviously lying about the teachers, particularly the Student Teacher, me. Towards the end of the semester, and my degree preparation, I was considering never teaching in schools after I received my degree. The stress. 1/3 of a good day spent in discipline. 6th graders having sex and coming to class stoned from pot they talked about stealing from their parents, or passed out parents' guests. In Parent-teacher conferences just before my graduation, I had a parent believe blatent lies about my behavior towards his non-white child. Accused me of assaulting her, yelling and spitting in her ear, when all I did was tell his continually disruptive daughter to behave during an event. All 4 of us teachers took turns keeping within a few feet of her to monitor her near constant troublemaking. He made my decision for me, and I never taught in a school again. Schools aren't the problem.

Steve Deasy, I appreciate your honesty and I agree there are many broken homes and broken kids who are forced to attend schools and create chaos, but schools ARE also THE PROBLEM.
Schools create by their very nature, a toxic bullying environment for ALL participants.
Factory schools HAVE ALWAYS been about compliance, not about teaching in the truest sense:
      ua-cam.com/video/kyWFpsAnVuI/v-deo.html
The cruel torturous inhuman mess that is the current mainstream teaching industry is why most parents today hold the majority of teachers in utter contempt and rightly so.
As you show with your own example, most teachers go back into schools and either become part of an inhuman coercive system or leave. It’s seems there are very few who decide to show the entrepreneurialism to create innovation in the education industry, by actually working directly with parents, raising their own funds, standing up in the political square against administrators and unions and establishing their own direct parent assisted community home schools. There is so much world class online teaching content now that this is he obvious thing to do if you’re a motivated young teaching graduate, instead of expecting the current shit schooling system based on coercion and compliance instead of exchange of knowledge, to be the answer.
I mean didn’t you see how broken the current education system was when YOU were a high school student? Why on earth would you think it would have ever been the answer to anything other than a Faustian Deal paycheck? Don’t you think most kids and parents can see this too? If you’re a part of a broken system and you don’t fix it, your part of the problem and bear part of the responsibility for the problem whether you like it or not!

At one time, there were no road rules and people drove where they liked, with significantly more accidents for kms travelled than there is in today’s numbers.
Once upon a time, doctors and nurses didn’t wash their hands and it took a generation to convince them to do so despite the clinical evidence being in existence for several decades.
Once there was only monarchies and kingdoms and then the founding fathers of America decided to assert their independence against the strongest military force the world had ever known to that time.
One there were telegraphs, then landline phones, then Steve Jobs invented the smart phone.
Schools are like industrial scale Lord Of The Flies experiments writ large. It’s shameful. Little wonder they are failing.
But because it’s a compliance system rather than a knowledge system, teachers are taught to be masters of compliance, hence they defend the status quo, fail to innovate and blame their customers - the parents and students - for their failure.
Steve Jobs didn’t blame phone customers for not inventing the smartphone. He invented it himself. But most people bought one!
Stop making excuses and accepting poor performance as a fact of life. Evolve. Be part of the solution instead of a handbrake which is a lot of the current problem.

No offense but perhaps it was for the best, teachers deal with far more today than what you just described. Teachers in the 80’s/90’s didn’t have to deal with school shooters on an annual basis or even students with greater tech skills than the educators. Today’s youth know more about the world than any generation before them, given their access to the internet from infancy. Most teachers trained in the 20th century just aren’t equipped to deal with the realities of 21st century America and students are very aware of that. This is why teachers who have a passion for education tend to perform better and earn greater respect from pupils than those who go into the profession with rose colored glasses but turn sour once they‘re reminded this is a public service job.

Yes we did when they did well we often told them how proud we were of them, but make no mistake we tolerated no krap concerning homework, deportment, respect of teachers, etc. You can raise respectful kids but as a parent, you have to establish who's in charge.

Not to mention all the kid has to do is just stay off social media platforms. Not like where a kid has to go to school everyday and come into contact with their tormentor and deal with their tormentor daily where there would be no way for the kid to escape the bullying except to be transferred to another school, which would lead to other issues.
Plus with cyberbullying, all communication can be recorded and then the parents can take legal and civil actions against the child and the child's parents because they'll have the evidence to prove the claims. Unlike with school bullying it's always hear say and hard to prove unless other kids step in and verifies the bullying. Which most kids won't do. Also cyberbullying, as long as the kid is not on some group chat room, the cyberbullying will always be 1 on 1, but in schools, other kids join in on the bullying especially if the bully is a popular kid.

@@taekwonchic110 Then you just admitted you were the source of the problem with your bullying. Because you continued to engage on your phone on social media platforms and you didn't block those who were "harassing" you online, you were just perpetuating the bullying.
If you didn't go on social media platforms then you wouldn't have gotten bullied by those people.
But my point is, when engaging online, parents and kids can control the degree of bullying just by simply getting off those social media platforms (i.e. facebook, twitter, tumblr, instagram, snapchat, etc..)
There's no need, in reality, for kids to be on social media platforms. When I was a kid those things didn't exist and the only way I was able to be bullied was only by going to school.
Plus, parents should also be teaching their kids that if they go on social media platforms and are getting bullied by anyone, then to block that person, tell them to "fuck off" and/or report the harasser to the platform customer support! (like one can do on facebook)
My point is, there are more available steps that a kid and/or parent can do to stop cyberbulling than there ever was with kids being bullied in person.
Also, like I said, with cyberbullying, all communications are recorded. Parents and kids need to be taught that if anyone does "bully" online, then to record the messages so that legal action can be taken!
      That's how you handle cyberbullying.
But MOST PEOPLE are not aware of these steps that can be taken. This is why cyberbullying exists. Most people, are not computer savy enough to know how to block or record the messaging or even how to report the event to the platform customer service. And that's what needs to change as well.

When I was 15 years one of my teachers said to the class that all of us are mediocre at the best, and always he had the chance he insults us, one day he said if we told this to our parents he will deny this and our parents don't believe us against him. I always have a good relationship with my teachers because I will always be a very good student, the teacher was a bad man and a terrible teacher. I have the luck of having parents with common sense and who listened to what I was saying, when I told them about this teacher they not only believed me but also went to confront him until he admitted that he treated us badly, the other parents realized that their children also told the truth about that man but they had not believed them. There is always a middle ground for which neither extreme serves us, that is why we have this problem, our generation changed the paradigm to the other extreme, the opposite of our parents and it is causing the same or more damage because it is combined with the lack of time and interest that they put to the education of their children.
