Hmm. Loved the video. Not quite sure I agree. Buying one of these will cost you far more with extended warranty and hassle involved. And at this price point the wrong people might be tempted to buy one. (If that makes sense)
A newer 570s or 720s might be a better choice. Given there current financial issues however, buying any right now might not be a good idea at all.

IF I lived in GB, particularly if I lived near the McLaren factory or the independent McLaren mechanic you featured in one of your videos, I’d consider a McLaren. Living on the other side of the pond, however, there is no way I’d touch a McLaren. There are simply too many problems that can arise with the cars, and too few places other than a McLaren dealer where such issues can be addressed. In a similar vein, I’d buy the second generation NSX here in the US, but not in GB or most other places. There are more Honda/Acura dealers than McLaren dealers, but many repairs to the NSX would require returning it to the factory because so much of its production process is unique.

    • @atastefortheroad4475
      @atastefortheroad4475 4 роки тому +1

Living in the US as well I'd be very reluctant to purchase a McLaren for the same reasons you cite. Taking a flyer on a Lotus Evora or a Morgan would feel tame by comparison if I wanted British quirky. Picking one of Porsche's GT cars or a Turbo S for the same money seems imminently a better choice for something "practical."

As much as I agree with your assessment, i'm struggling to square this with your previous video detailing the impending destruction of the company. Unlike MG Rover, the parts side of McLaren isn't a separate company and won't function without the car company. A valid concern but I do know of quite a few parts which are not McLaren specific that might surprise you - eg. Turbo.
Complex things like the gearbox can also be repaired by third parties like Thorney, who remade parts when they couldnt buy them.
The biggest concern is usually body panels - those are quite difficult to replicate cheaply

James that was a breath of fresh air my friend. people get on the band wagon of slating Mclaren, everyone’s entitled to an opinion but that doesn’t make it factual, they think Ferrari’s are cheap to run really ! and unless your hacking round the Nurburgring who wants a 911 with its gold Rolex and Filofax appeal. Yes Mclaren is the Apple of the super car world and yes it has dodgy hose clips but as John Thorne will confirm, overall it’s an amazing car. It’s a future classic for the discerning super car owner. To that end I have a deposit on a 12C Spider, Tom at Thorney is inspecting next week for the warranty purchase and the dealer is covering that, I guess the proof and the facts will be in the proverbial pudding......

Thanks for bringing this kind of review and opinions to your videos. This car has been heaven for me since 3 years. I’ve owned several 911, Vantage v12 and M3 and they were good but boring compared to this: carbon tub, speed break, supercar doors, the acceleration to 200km/h in 9secs and the roof retracts in 18 secs! As a spider, sensations are even more intense. It does get a lot of attention over here in BE, NL and DE and 99% positive, except for one close neighbour after a cold start. It has the sport exhaust... after 20000 miles, I do recommend owning one, of course with an experienced dealer not too far away, which is required for any car of this level of performance and price anyway.

However... if you discount the low (& getting lower!) prices due to depreciation and the excellent performance, the decidedly questionable prospects of McLaren servicing, the equally depressing availability and supply of both parts and information, combined with the lengths to which user servicing has been designed OUT of the equation... I cannot think of anything more dubious apart from Russian Roulette!!!
IF you're overflowing with disposable income then, fine, you may get away with having a McLaren as a disposable car. IF you want a Supercar on the cheap, a McLaren is still the least complicated road to bankruptcy! To summarise, working on them is likely a nightmare (especially repair compared to servicing) and parts,if available, cost a fortune!

This may be solid advice in the UK, but I am concerned that the service network in the US isn't quite there yet. Too many 12Cs I've seen here have service histories where the expenses are half the original value of the cars. I would also say that 570S is probably the best buy of the bunch if you are getting a McLaren because it lacks the hydraulic suspension of the higher-end cars. I think the more conventional suspension will be less of a source of headaches in the longer term on an older car.

    • @trackdays7625

I would avoid the 12c at all costs regardless of the price. I work as a professional driver coach aside from my normal day job so I’ve had first hand experience. I can confirm the 12c is a fantastic driving car, driving it years back when they were new. However from my experience the car sat more in the paddock because of electronic issues forcing the car into limp mode. The owner told me he took it multiple times to the dealership to get fixed and they never properly fixed it. Whenever the car was pushed on track something would break or malfunction. I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem for a spirited mountain run, but on track we are properly pushing the cars, and the 12c couldn’t handle it. At least the one I was coaching and driving in. I would hope not all of them would have the same issues.

Are those with in period modifications race cars, rare cars, and those with famous owners. I think a lot of future classics will miss out on being those period modified race cars. I was looking at goodwood racing this last few years and last year they did that big mini race with 60 FIA K class cars. People were massively amazed to see 60 classic cooper S's on the grid. I was too. But less than a year later the market is a wash with FIA K class 60's cooper s race cars. It has disappointed me to see that many wealthy owners had clearly just bought their car for that race, and then unlovingly just thrown it back on the market once it was done.

I would possibly look at a Spyder in Volcano red as it's my favorite color on a Mclaren. My second choice would be a 570 Spyder but in blue.

Really insightful video Jay. Cant emphasize enough how correct you are that you do not get a hard time driving around town. In a Ferrari or even some of the modern more exotic looking McLaren's, people will give you some grief. Not in the 12C, and as a purchaser who didn't want a lot of attention, this is a much better choice (not saying you won't get attention, but for whatever reason a lot less negative attention as you said). I tend to meet two new people every time I drive the car. They want to know more about it, sit in it and check it out (before all of the current social distancing).
My one recommendation to people is to buy from a McLaren dealer with a CPO. It will cost you easily $20k more, but you'll get that car that was taken care of, wasn't modified, and went through all of the software and other upgrades (and qualifies for the warranty instantly - those upgrades btw easily surpass the price difference). I haven't had any major issues with my car and it has been a pleasure so far. I encourage more people to go look into them now. Needless to say there are incredibly fast and as mentioned in a previous video's comment, turned a 1:30.67 at Laguna in a stock one with modern street tires. Pretty insane really when you think about it.
Two reasons now is a good time. 1) you mentioned that the owners who had the current cars took care of them and were meticulous with them. Agreed. Definitely still lot's of good cars, even in better shape than when new. They basically ironed the bugs out for you. 2) The extended warranty only goes for 12 years and so some of the older versions' clocks are ticking for extended warranty options (if they do not have a local person like it seems is by yourself).
One thing to watch out for...Mclaren's from non-McLaren dealerships...modded or previously modded 12C's...non-CPO cars. Not worth risking any of that on this type of car. Oh and you'll probably want to make sure you have a McLaren dealership by you if you're going with the warranty!
As always enjoying your vids keep it up man!!!
