This is a beautiful song! It was one of a theme song under documentary film “forbidden city”. The song was talking about the rise and fallen of ‘Ming Dynasty’ and the lyrics mean we have to keep our hope and brightness to ourselves when we have a harsh time.
This song is the theme song for the 6th episode of the 12 episodes "Forbidden City" documentary. This episode is based on Emperor Chongzhen's (of Ming Dynasty) life - he was born weak, and bore the burden of being born as an emperor. Though not the best emperor, he did try his best but ultimately failed to save his dynasty from collapse due to many reasons. At 4:30, Zhou Shen incorporated the Peking Opera style singing - he was personally taught by a well known Peking Opera master, to ensure he sang it in the right way since Peking Opera style singing is very difficult to master (the many intonations and etc).
