  • In this video I just wanted to share what a normal italki class with someone new looks like for me and to share an update on my general Spanish conversational skills. In this video I took a class with Amaia who was super fun and easy to talk to so a big thank you to her for both the class and allowing me to upload it!

    You're doing very well Shane. If I could make one suggestion, becoming super proficient in the subjunctive mood will take your Spanish to the next level. For example, at around 4:58 you said ”no creo que había pensado en...". I believe the correct construction would be "no creo que hubiera (or hubiese) pensado en...". Once you get the hang of it, the subjunctive really is not that hard and trust me, it'll really make a difference as to how native Spanish speakers will perceive your level. ¡A por ello!

    Good video! First of all, I want to thank the author of the channel for making this beautiful and useful video for us! Many people are embarrassed to speak a foreign language if they have no speaking skills. People are afraid to hear criticism from others in their address. It all comes from having a psychological complex - to make a mistake. But, after all, he who does nothing is not wrong! In Yuriy Ivantsiv's workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language" states that we need to talk as much as possible: with yourself, with the mirror, with inanimate objects, with children and with pets. Find an interlocutor in real life or online. Talk without shyness. People won't care how you speak. They understand that you are a foreigner, as long as they understand you. They may even acknowledge your progress in their language and compliment you. However, always be prepared for criticism of your speaking skills. If you have the will to speak, you will gain an interesting interlocutor to consolidate your knowledge. Everyone is strewn with mistakes - don't be afraid to learn from them. As the Latin wisdom says, "walk and thou shalt not go astray". In the book "Polyglot Notes" by Yuriy Ivantsiv an entire chapter is devoted to the development of spoken language. Here you will find many useful tips and each student can choose a technique that suits him or her best! I wish you all the best of luck in your language learning!

      I wanted to know how do you comprehend Spanish so well do you have any tips?

    • @ShaneGodliman
      @ShaneGodliman  3 роки тому +5

      @@joshuachisem1576 so in short it’s mostly lots of practice/exposure. But I have definitely found for me what has helped me the most has been to be able to read and listen at the same time. For example at first I watched a lot of Netflix with the subtitles in Spanish, later I started reading a lot of books with the audiobook to accompany it. Having the audio and the written text together I feel like has really helped my brain to be able to differentiate the different sounds and really tune in to what’s being said. Final thing is that a lot of understanding is about understanding the context, it’s not always necessary to hear and understand or translate every word, especially at first, the goal is to focus on the main point and then with time you start to be able to pick up more and more of the details and nuances . Hopefully that makes a little sense!

      @@ShaneGodliman your much better than me as I've been learning for about 9-10 months (6months properly). The biggest problem for me is listening as I absolutely suck when the teacher goes native, though I'm learning Latin American spanish so that might be why.

    • @ShaneGodliman
      @ShaneGodliman  3 роки тому +4

      Yeah at first I think it’s definitely easier to focus on one accent, I’m sure I’d struggle a bit with natives from Latin America speaking fast and casually, but everyone’s journey is different! I found that for improving my listening skills, reading along with the audio really helped me to differentiate the sounds and get comfortable with native speed
