Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990, the group's line-up includes vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey. Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist since 1995, replacing its original bassist Paul D'Amour.
Pretty spot on analysis. The song is about a friend of Tool who was prosecuted and convicted for weed, only for it to come to light that the judge who made the ruling was caught with a prostitute and crack cocaine. Hence "the pot calling the kettle black".
"The Pot" is one of their most 'radio-friendly' songs. They can go really heavy. They can go tribal. A lot of their songs carry soar and sludge through spirituality. Once you dive in your next Tool song is your favorite Tool song. Make yours "46 & 2." Enjoy!
"The worst thing about hearing TOOL for the first time is you can never hear TOOL for the first time ever again." Welcome to the deepest rabbit-hole you've ever fallen into.
The Silver Lining of COVID. Never would I have watched people react to TOOL. They of course knew when COVID was going to hit that's why they changed the logo to a syringe. Listen to Fear and think how every song relates to what's going on and to come. Maynard is a wine making , time traveling, space cowboy. Danny, the Octopus could actually be " H " and the song is written from the perspective of his drum kit.
"Vicarious" would be another great Tool song to jump into. It's from the same album and also is a high-energy track with some very thought-provoking lyrics. I have a feeling you're really going to love your Tool journey. There's nobody else like them!
I would second this as a recommendation. There are a lot of great Tool tracks that people will recommend, but some of the lyrics can be very cryptic. Vicarious has a pretty clear meaning, and is a banger. Also, the usual disclaimer: avoid the official music videos for your first listen. They're amazing, they've got a lot going on and it makes it harder to follow the songs on your first listen.
Hell yeah, this made my day. Tool is a genre of their own. Don't be surprised if each track hits completely different or if you don't like one. There will be more you like they have to huge catalog.
Excellent. Been a TOOL fan since their 1st album. 30 years, and I still choose to listen to them over others VERY regularly. And, I agree with other comments, TOOL “IS” a genre - not OF a genre. 🌀out!!!!
Gosh this song filled my brain with loads of memories. Driving around with Tool blaring out my windows. Aenema is an absolute brilliant track Fil. Have a listen. Be prepared for thought provoking lyrics!!!
This song is actually about the hypocrisy of the government and elected officials. A friend of Maynards was on the way to his house and was pulled over in Arizona and arrested for having a small amount of Marijuana on him (Ganja please). He ended up having to go to court and was reprimanded and basically talked down to by the judge presiding over his case. Later that year, that same judge was arrested on Methamphetamine possession and Solicitation of a prostitute. So all the references to hypocrisy, and the joke of the U.S. legal system(Kangaroo court, etc.) are referencing back to that incident.
A nice thing about Tool is if you like one song sonically, you'll probably like them all. They've developed their sound consistently over the years but it always sounds distinctly like them. I'd almost say they're a one-band genre because...you just won't mistake them for a different band once you know what they sound like. This is pretty much as heavy as they get. They do have some softer songs like that are still consistent with their overall feel. Outside of a few songs which are about personal things, Tool is pretty tight-lipped about about saying what songs "mean" in favor of letting the listener interpret them. One specific thing about their process is lyrics and vocals are only crafted after the rest of the music so they're directly inspired by it and fit the songs individually. You can go wrong with any of their songs but some notably good ones are Right In Two, The Patient, Schism, Lateralus, Vicarious, and Hooker With A Penis
Hell yea! Go down the rabbit hole man. Also if you get to Forty six & 2 and react to Tools version, another version would be the one done by the o’keefe music foundation where the kids play that same song. It will warm your heart to see the kids enjoying the music.
I'm not sure if you actually read your comments on youtube but i have requested this band to you more times than i have taken breathes in my life , ok , exaggerating a little. but i have requested that you react to this band a bunch over the last couple of years . all i can say is that you have really been missing out but I'm glad you finally made it.
Fil, this saves me doing a STL for this, although there is also a banger cover I know of..... It is good ol' school US rock. They have quite a back catalogue of banger tracks. So cool this was recommended to you. Nicely done, bro. 'Tool - Right In Two' of which there is a really cool 'fan made animated vid'. #QcumberSquad #Tool - Fil, I'm off back to the study.
Wish I could like this comment a million times! So, so, so, so very important on a first listen to any Tool track! Lyric videos are ok, though. Just no official videos. They will screw with your head!
As you mentioned the Drumming... take the Vic Firth Drum Cam Version of Tools Song "Pneuma". The only risk is getting hypnotised by Danny Carey's Drum Skills so much that You miss the lyrics 😅 ... also very nice songs from Tool "46&2" and of course "Sober"
Danny Carey was once asked how he remembers so many difficult drum parts for all of the songs. He replied (paraphrasing), "I just listen to what the other guys have put together, and then I practice it for 14 years."
I’ve seen so many reactions to Tool and I have my favorites but they’ve pretty much have heard most of them. I’m excited for you to go down the 🐇 hole! You will not be disappointed. They change lives. 🖤
TOOLARMY 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥I subscribed because you have now found the band to go down the rabbit hole with. Great job on the channel, as well. Pretty great assessment.
With TOOL, the music is written first and then the lyrics come. This is why the music always says the same things the lyrics say. It’s because the vocalist writes his lyrics around how the song makes him feel
Welcome to the Tool wormhole. Enjoy...their music is always 20 years ahead of everyone else. If you get a chance please react to Tomahawk, God Hates a Coward Live or anything by Mike Patton. Keep up the great work. One Love
Thank you...I am a new subscriber. Welcome to the Tool Army. Again, thank you for the enthusiastic response and for providing entertaining content for us. Keep up the great work. One Love
No other band can evolve so much between albums but yet remain so unmistakably still themselves. When Fear Inoculum came out it was like nothing they had ever done before but still immediately identifiable as Tool. Spiral out.
Great job! So many of these reviews don't use the lyrics and then it's only half a reaction . Kangaroo court is a court with a pre determined outcome and Black Kettle was an American Indian, however your also right about the pot calling the kettle black. Maynard is very clever with his meanings. I love music in which you have to dig deeper to get the meaning as opposed to cookie cutter obvious like most all music today.
What a journey, Fable. I was one of them pushing you into the Aurora-verse way back - and here you are reacting to legacy Tool (that is surprisingly related to Aurora emotionally, harmonically and topically speaking) years later. You should check out "Lateralus" next since you will hear similarities between how Aurora treats "circles" musically and how Tool goes full-blown mathematical with the Fibonacci sequence.
Welcome to the spiral! I'm. Here. For. It. Loved the reaction! Can't wait for more of this journey! You're in for one helluva ride! Im with the others that have suggested 46 & 2 and Pneuma drum cam for your next ones! Lateralus, when you get to it, is a masterpiece. So many great Tool songs.....enjoy, my friend!
Btw the wandering earth movie isnt that simple. Its not just them making it out of the solar system. Because of miscalculation they actually run in 7 "crisis" event. By memory i think one of crisis events what the Jupiter crisis. Where they didnt calculate it probably so they almost got sucked into jupiter. But some people sacrificed them selves
Welcome to the Wonderful world of Tool. Next stop enlightenment. From an Tool fan since 93' i always suggest you go back, start from the beginning ( Opiate ep) and through their discography, beginning to end(like we did). It's an evolution and it best if you don't skip steps. Opiate, Undertow, Ænema, 10,000 Days, then Fear Inoculum. Can't wait to watch your journey. Spiral out...keep going ❤
Tool Army Unite! We have captured another! Spiral out bruh!🌀 I always suggest the live drum cam version of "pneuma" you will be in awe of Danny's greatness. Best drummer on the planet, hands down. Also a personal favorite is 'bottom' from the undertow album. Special guest spot by Henry Rollins in that one, straight banger!
Welcome to Tool! You’ve taken your first step into a larger world. 🤘🏻 Consider checking out: Right in Two Sober Hooker with a Penis Pushit The Grudge Bottom
There's not a lot that's 'old school' about Tool. Unless consciousness expansion through metal-adjacent, progressive composition, and highly sophisticated rhythms is 'old school'. This song is obviously pushing the boundaries less than most of their work, so I can see where that impression could come from. If/when you get to songs like Schism, Lateralus, and Pneuma, it will become very clear how unconventional they are.
I'd recommend Sober live Reading 1993, H, Schism, Right in Two, and Pneuma as songs from across their catalog that would be good introductory material. The Pneuma live drum cam video is worth watching. Many drummers (and non-drummers) have made reaction videos to it.
Omg, yes! So glad you've discovered Tool. Def worth the dive. The Pot is one of my faves. I have a strong feeling you'll really get into them since you're a lover of musical talent and substantive lyrics. So a MUST is their live version of Pneuma which shows the legend that is Danny Carey on drums. Maynard's cutting social commentary fits the sound of this band and it all just works. Hearing them live, the sound just envelopes your whole being. They're a mood for sure! I would also suggest Schism, Aenema, Vicarious, and Sober. Enjoy this ride!! ❤
Tool is a one of a kind band. Whenever a band comes out with a new style then you get a hundred other bands that copy that style. With Tool they have their own unique sound but there has been no other band that has been able to copy their style. TOOL IS THE BEST! Many people will be here for you as you journey through each Tool track because you can only hear a song for the first time once. We will all be living vicariously through you as you get hit by each genius track from this band. Welcome to the Tool Army! Spiral out! Keep going! 🌀🌀🌀 Next songs.... Lateralus, The GRUDGE, Ænima, Jambi, Right in two, 46 and 2, Hooker with a penis...so many great songs!
I think Lateralus might be the Tool-iest Tool song they've ever Tooled. It's so hard for me to pick a favorite, but that one is definitely in the running!
Bro this album is his deepest feelings for his mother,in my opinion, you like what you heard please dive deep into Tool you wont be disappointed but intrigued to learn more about the band
Welcome to the TooL Army good Sir. The distortion you were referencing, and also the solo in the middle of the song, are Justin Chancellor on bass. The band are four instruments, including the voice, and all swap roles regularly, taking the lead, syncing with one or other, and using counterpoint like no others can. Stick with the TooL journey, and I guarantee you will become even more clever. Good reaction. Keep up the good work. 👌
They are referring to the California legal system. Liars & Lawyers are no different and neither were the rest of the bureaucrats in the legal system when it came to possession of Marijuana in California in the 90's.
I heard that it was about a prosecutor who went hard on a friend over weed possession charges but then a couple years later got busted for heroine himself.

The Pot is a funk masterpiece wrapped in a tailored metal suit.
And the four members of Tool are absolute masters of their respective instruments.
"The Pot" is one of their most 'radio-friendly' songs. They can go really heavy. They can go tribal. A lot of their songs carry soar and sludge through spirituality. Once you dive in your next Tool song is your favorite Tool song. Make yours "46 & 2." Enjoy!
Tool is in a league of their own. Thanks
This guy just changed his musical future!! 🤘🏼
Fuck ya he did!!!
"The worst thing about hearing TOOL for the first time is you can never hear TOOL for the first time ever again."
Welcome to the deepest rabbit-hole you've ever fallen into.
Yes this!!!
We constantly chase the dragon and live vicariously through those that get to experience tool for the first time.
Very true!
totally. I'm STILL down that rabbit hole decades later :D

Hope you enjoy your new favourite band!

Excellent. Been a TOOL fan since their 1st album. 30 years, and I still choose to listen to them over others VERY regularly. And, I agree with other comments, TOOL “IS” a genre - not OF a genre.
🌀out!!!!
By “High” I think means it as conceited or “High and mighty“. Sitting on your high horse.
I totally agree with this, and love the implication that they get high off their self-righteousness. Spot on!
Gosh this song filled my brain with loads of memories. Driving around with Tool blaring out my windows. Aenema is an absolute brilliant track Fil. Have a listen. Be prepared for thought provoking lyrics!!!
This song has a 99% chance of making you do the stank face, as soon as the song really starts.
I've heard this song 100000 times and I stank face EVERYTIME! 🤘🏼
❤ from MN. One of the best reactions to this Grammy winning track!!

The Tool Army has a new recruit, your going to love Tool
Vibes of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love".
I didn't realize that you haven't reacted to Tool yet. You have found a new rabbit hole!

That is my bad... sorry man. I probably read it but I read so much I most certainly forgot. They are great!
@@traktician They are so much greater than you actually realize at this point. You are gonna love this journey

Try "Schism" by Tool next. Great lyrics for you to breakdown.
Sober and Schism
Rule 1 of reacting to Tool… audio only.
Wish I could like this comment a million times! So, so, so, so very important on a first listen to any Tool track! Lyric videos are ok, though. Just no official videos. They will screw with your head!
Except for the Danny Carey Pnuema drum cam…that needs a watch. 😉
Big hugs and welcome to the show!
Whooo let's gooooo...love Tool you rock special Fil thanku lots much love an God bless always x
Layers...many layers...no lag at all...beautiful artists! Loved them from day one! 55yr old here!

I love how reactors suggest Tool to each other. I'm sure it's a great way to grow your channel but also such a great band to experience 😊
I can't believe you haven't heard Tool- very excited for this reaction!
Welcome to the Army. This band does not have a bad track. Enjoy the journey. spiral out. 💜
Tool is not a band, it's a genre by itself...
Top. First Time Reaction its allways the best.
The best band ever! Welcome, enjoy the ride! Just start at the beginning, you won't regret it.
Live version of Sober has to be next. This band is absolutely amazing. Enjoy your trip.
Welcome to Tool Army. It's your first step and the rest will follow. 🙂
He is talking about the years long lawsuit Tool had against their label over music rights.
And another fan is born
I’ve seen so many reactions to Tool and I have my favorites but they’ve pretty much have heard most of them. I’m excited for you to go down the 🐇 hole! You will not be disappointed. They change lives. 🖤
Sub'd for more Tool, excited for your journey...You have no idea! LOL
TOOL will change your life, forever; how that change manifests depends on the individual but the change is inevitable.
TOOLARMY 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥I subscribed because you have now found the band to go down the rabbit hole with. Great job on the channel, as well. Pretty great assessment.

Keep up the great work. One Love
When youre saying blues, you probably wanted to say funk actually, because the rhythm section along with the guitars are super funky!
I agree, but I also think that funk's roots are squarely embedded in blues.
You've only touched the surface. This will be a long and amazing journey for you.
My favorite band since I purchased their debut album as a blind buy the week it was released in 1993. This generation's Pink Floyd.
Welcome to the journey
No other band can evolve so much between albums but yet remain so unmistakably still themselves. When Fear Inoculum came out it was like nothing they had ever done before but still immediately identifiable as Tool.
Spiral out.
Jambi is another great one from this album!
So many other GREAT songs fr9m these guys!
They are probably my favorite band of all time.
there are two types of people, who love TOOL, and who didn't let themselves to listening TOOL yet..
Yes Tool! Welcome to the rabbit hole!🤟🔥
Gotta check out Sober, Lateralus, 46 and 2
The song won the Grammy. It’s that good.
Ok. Now that your feet are wet. Time to dive in and react to 46 and 2!!! Amazing lyrically and sonically!
Great reaction sir. This is my favorite band! Would love to see you react to more!
I have been wondering myself if Fil is ready for Tool :) I came close to putting a Tool song on one series but the floodgates are open now...
Tool needs more South African fans so that maybe, if we're lucky, one of their world tours will include a stop in this corner of the globe.
They lyrics are calling out the hypocrisy of societal institutions. "Who are you (church, government, educational system, etc) to point your finger?"
Magnify is my favourite reactor, and took is my favourite band, welcome to the ride!
Tool fans love watching people become Tool fans more than any other fans..... this is an unshakable truth.
"You must have been high." Up on your high horse

My original genre is metal and i m loving this reaction lol love ya Fable
Followed for the Aes Rock vids, but old school Tool army. Good Tool reactions are gold.
Toolbox
I fucking love "Bottom." That's the song that sealed the deal for a young me and set me on a lifelong journey of love and respect for this band.
This song is fun to watch people listen to.
I enjoyed your reaction!
Welcome to Tool! You’ve taken your first step into a larger world. 🤘🏻

Right in Two
Sober
Hooker with a Penis

The fact that you have 100 thousand subs and ya still haven’t heard TOOL is mind blowing
He was only 20 seconds in when he said that, but yeah, this is one of their "catchy" tracks.
I'd recommend Sober live Reading 1993, H, Schism, Right in Two, and Pneuma as songs from across their catalog that would be good introductory material.
The Pneuma live drum cam video is worth watching. Many drummers (and non-drummers) have made reaction videos to it.
My favorite band! More Tool please!
Found my fellow TOOLIGANS at cherry poppin reaction. One of my secret joys in life ha ha. Enjoy the ride sir…
Omg, yes! So glad you've discovered Tool. Def worth the dive. The Pot is one of my faves. I have a strong feeling you'll really get into them since you're a lover of musical talent and substantive lyrics. Next songs.... Lateralus, The GRUDGE, Ænima, Jambi, Right in two, 46 and 2, Hooker with a penis...so many great songs!
Maynard's lyrics are heavily influenced by Jung and Campbell (among many others). "My shadow... Shedding skin..."
Not in this one tho, that's 46 & 2 so I don't get why you reference it here lol
The Pot is the uncontested gateway drug into Tool. Get ready for rehab, mate.
Lateralus is another great song of theirs. I see a lot of other good suggestions in the comments already. Enjoy going down the rabbit hole!
Dope reaction!! Awesome to see people's first reaction to tool.... especially intelligent ones 👍
ne obliviscaris - and plague flowers the kaleidoscope. super chill and hardcore at the same time. its a must listen
Welcome to the TooL Army good Sir. The distortion you were referencing, and also the solo in the middle of the song, are Justin Chancellor on bass.
