    Michael Rozyne is Executive Director of Red Tomato, a non-profit produce 'food hub' based in Plainville, MA. He's been marketing small farm products for three decades, including work on conventional and organic farms in Maine, and as Purchaser/Marketer for a regional food distributor in the Northeast.
    In 1986, he co-founded fair trade coffee company Equal Exchange, now a leading US fair trade company. Rozyne started Red Tomato in 1996, to bring global fair trade principles to farmers in the US. His current obsession is finding a way to make local produce available in a grocery store near you.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    The Idea is not new. We dont really need Produce that comes from the other end of the Continent if it can grow around here just fine. There are reagions that are not good to grow food, and they have to import - sure. But I really want to see what impact it really had, if no foodstuff in your supermarket traveled more than {100 km, 500 km, 1.000 km, 5.000 km, 10.000 km}.

    I think it sounds all well & good, but surely it's just shifting the burden short term & increasing the erosion of localised topsoil? Other than producing better tasting food I don't see it as a realistic solution long term, more a way of producing a 'good fuzzy feeling' while the underlying problems of exponential growth & waste continues?

      socialism - we think it is a good idea for it to cost more to eat. Only the rich can afford it and the poor stay poor (and hungry)
