Wrong. This is simply the most efficient way to score. Also defending 5 guys on the perimeter is extremely difficult. Means more open shots for players compared to 8 guys standing in the paint while one has the ball and tries to score. So most points and easiest shots equals best offense ever in NBA history. Thats what we have today. And thats why so many players shoot so many 3's.

But right now under this rules teams HAVE TO play this way to have a chance. I didnt say I like it, did I? I just pointed out the facts why teams play that way. And being lazy has nothing to do with it. Teams on average run way more miles per game today then they did in the 90's. Those are just facts. And once more, I would love to see rule changes that give other strategies a chance to be successfull again. But right now thats what teams have to do.

    3 pointers? No.
Traveling to get those 3 pointers? Yes.
    Gather step? Yes.
    No hand checks? Yes.
    No physical contact allowed? Yes.
Basketball was never supposed to be a completely non-contact sport. They've changed and reinterpreted all the rules so that the advantage always goes to the offensive player. You think you have somebody locked up on defense only for them to take two more steps after they've stopped dribbling the ball and then take a shot. It goes against your instincts, because that's not how anybody grew up playing basketball.

They need to get rid of that stupid gather step, allow hand checking, clog the paint, get rid of the defensive 3 second rule, and that will help cut down on the scrimmage feel of these games where it’s just open 3s and open lanes allowed for wide open layups and dunks.

Too many games is not an excuse. They've had an 82 game schedule since the 1967/68 season and have been playing 48 minute games since 1946. They've had the shot clock since 1954 and the 3 point line since 1979. It's hard to blame any of those things because they've all been around for so long. Players used to play harder because they had more emotional investment in their team because they expected to play for the same team their entire careers. It's hard to imagine Larry Bird playing for anyone else but the Celtics or Magic playing for anyone but the Lakers. Those two were emotionally invested in their teams and that rivalry.

Interesting insights Rachel. I played alot of basketball on Long Island, and was a guest quite a few times with Dr. J s Nets at the Nassau Coliseum. This was the A.B.A. ,and we had the 3 point line already. It was the 70 s. The games were very exciting. Most of the games were played mid range and they didn t depend on the 3 pointer like they do now. There was alot of dunking as entertainment in the ABA. Much more than the NBA at that time. Also ,if it was Dr. J s Nets against the David Thompson Denver Nuggets ,they played tough defense. Very exciting games. I think that to encourage mid range games with better defense, and less 3 pointers tried, the line could be 24 ft. 6in. and taken away from the corners. That corner shot is so easy, and the 23 ft. 9 inches is too tempting. If it were further out ,they would be reluctant to take so many. The players today, with exceptions are taking it easy, and many don t play defense. Certain guys were known for tough defense. Rare these days.

Count Young as another one who did it (and created another change in FT calling) and you have the full list of guys who shoot/shot a lot of FT while actively hunting them.

There is only one solution to the 3pt shot explosion, move the 3pt line back 2 feet and take away the corner 3. Then only a few players who can shoot and make the 3 like Steph, Dame and Caitlin will take the shot and everyone else will revert back to more old-fashion basketball. Besides that, I really hate the terms "stretch 4" and "stretch 5".

i'm not hating or diminishing Steph's achievements. but i felt the novelty of the 'logo three's" grew old fast. for me, it was not much about the physicality that i miss; what i miss was the ATHLETICISM and FINESSE of driving to the hoop and witness a myriad ways the previous superstars dealt with towering/daunting defenses. every attempt was mostly a unique SPECTACLE.
these days, i cant help but notice that 3-pointers aren't exactly "more exciting". a 3-pointer to me looks nearly the same as the next. these days, i'm just perhaps waiting for 'something new'... and my attention is elsewhere rn other than the NBA.

  • @dontbanmebrodontbanme5403
    @dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 9 днів тому +1

The excessive 3s are definitely a huge problem. But it's not the only ones. Here's my list of issues:
    * Nobody plays anymore. This is not me guessing, it's a fact. The number of players missing games has gone up big time. Now, we're at the point where players are just saying straight up, yeah, I'm not playing back to backs. Would you drop $1K and take your family to a game, only for all the stars to take the day off?
    * The gather step (and traveling in general). Simply put, players can take 3, 4, 5 and even more steps and it's not called. That makes it way too easy to score.
    * EVERYTHING IS A FOUL! Of course no one can play D if everything is a foul. That makes it way too easy to score (this will be a theme, btw).
    * No handchecking. No physicality. This is part of the last point. Again, if you breathe on a player and it's a foul, no crap, players are going to have an easy time scoring.
    * FLOPPING! When all else fails and a player isn't getting a foul call, flop, flop and flop some more!
    * You need to be a millionaire to afford all of the tv packages to actually watch the games.
    * The excessive number of 3s. I still believe if you put the '96 Bulls in a time machine and brought them to today's NBA, they'd win 75 games. They actually ran plays. They weren't just chucking 3s.

    • @dontbanmebrodontbanme5403
      @dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 9 днів тому

      How to solve the problems?
      * Get rid of guaranteed contracts. You play, you get a game check. That would be the quickest way to get rid of load management!
      * Get rid of the gather step and actually call traveling like they used to.
      * Bring back hand checking. I'm no longer impressed when a guy scores 30 today, because there's no physicality.
      * Actually penalize floppers like the NBA said they were going to.
Oh, here's another one (which I know the NBA would never touch): Too many teams make the playoffs, making the regular season meaningless. Only 5 teams in each conference should make it in: the 3 division winners and two wild cards. The conference leader in each conference gets a first round bye as a true reward for getting that distinction. Otherwise, what's the point in watching the regular season if everyone gets to make it in anyway?

There are ways to increase competition like playing 60 games instead of 82 or only allowing 12 teams into the playoffs instead of 16. Maybe fewer teams? IDK, but competition has to increase if we ever want to see defense played again and prevent players from taking games off for “rest.”
I think as far as 3 pointers go, the evidence is clear that the midrange game is almost completely dead in the NBA because it is a lower percentage shot than around the basket and it has less reward then a 3 pointer with similar shooting percentages. More 3’s is a symptom of a statistical problem that promoted the kind of mess that we saw in the clip.
Maybe create an incentive like - and these are horrible ideas and just an example of incentive - having 2-3 and 4 point plays or move the 3 point line back in to the traditional High School line if they can somehow still promote floor spreading. IDK, but the middy needs to be somehow incentivized more if we want to see the shot chucking stop and have teams actually running plays or even promoting a semblance of more strategic game play in general.

Massive volume / reps growing up is what it takes to go pro these days, and that volume is what causes all of these injuries to players.
In the 80s/90s there were significantly less injuries despite the 82 game season and the sub-optimal recovery / training regime that existed back then.
This allowed for a physical game that was much more interesting and exciting, and it’s why load management / reduced physicality today is such a huge focus.
Removing the 3 point line would change the game but wouldn’t solve the lack of defensive intensity - doubt we will ever see the intensity of the 80s & 90s again.

5:36 50 3PA per game out of around 90 FGA per game. So, mostly 3s now.
I think the endless 3 is just the current "winning basketball" trend. It is like when they thought you could only win if you had a dominant big man.
Every pro has its con. Structuring your strategy around defending against 3s leaves you vulnerable in different ways, like in the paint. The second a team destroys doing that or with a hybrid, everyone else will follow suit.

I honestly didn't mind before, when the 3-ball was used as a last-resort shot. But nowadays, players today depend on it TOO MUCH & making it their FIRST offensive option and it's getting ANNOYING....and I'm speaking as a FAN of 3-pt shooting!

Move back the three point line and widen the arch eliminating the corner three or get rid of it completely. The point is to force the game in the paint/mid-range and prevent low-efficient long range shots. Game would be more intense and strategic when you have to make that crucial three at the top of the key towards the end regulation.

I hope the clip is not representative of NBA play. Is modern theory not to follow your shot to rebound?

My problem with the modern NBA is, when the 3 point shot isn't going in, the players will still take lots of shots from 3. In the past, when you're cold from 3, players take shots from long 2, middy, floater, layup & dunk. I know the stats say the 3 is the most efficient shot, but I hope the league at least take more shots from non-three point areas.

Do you not understand the concept of streaks? Sometimes they end. You don't just stop shooting bc you think a streak will never end.

I do know what a streak/ hot hand is. My point was about those players who don't make their threes as much, it's at least better to take some non 3s sprinkled in with 3 point attempts, not just jacking up 3s carelessly like the one Rachel showed in her vid

Even playground ball we wouldn't shoot unless someone was in position for an offensive rebound.

Go look at the early 2010s, each team had their own identity. Grit n Grind was always about defence, Heatles with pure blitz, OKC’s run n gun, Lob City Clippers, Bench Mob Raptors. Each player had a role to play, superstars were superstars and defence knew how to be played

    Implement these 2 rules:
    1.0 point per block
    2.5 points per dunk
This should deter the need for 3 point attempts and bring physicality

A good start would be enforcing the rules already in place. Carrying the ball is a turnover, moving your pivot foot is a turnover, lowering your shoulder into somebody is a charge. These things are rarely, if ever, called these days.

It should surprise NO ONE that the end of the ban on zone defense and the three-point changes has turned the game into a 3-point contest. The game is so spread out now I sincerely think there might be room for a six-man team.

I remember that time when they said Clyde Drexler was a better 3 point shooter than Jordan which led to Jordan coming out the next game bombing 3 after 3 draining them like crazy during the NBA Finals. When the journalists asked him why he didnt shoot more 3's he said because he didnt have to. When you have players like Steph and Caitlin who hit at a crazy high percentage then it makes the game entertaining but when you have players who have no business behind the arc chucking them up while totally disregarding defense it just seems to take away from the game. This is all just my opinion of course.
