  • @QuantumHistorian
    @QuantumHistorian 3 місяці тому +46

    IMO, surviving re-entry is the most important test. If the heat tiles don't work (or just fall off), or the mass to surface area ratio is too large for it to bleed off enough speed before it hits the thickest parts of the atmosphere, then it's a serious problem. That's not something that software updates or slight adjustments to hardware will fix. It's critical to the whole point of starship that it can survive re-entry.

    • @lachyt5247
      @lachyt5247 3 місяці тому +9

      They've been working on launching the rocket and staging, not reentry. I'd hardly be calling something which isn't even a focus of IFT3 'the most' important test let alone important at all. They will work on improving heat shielding when reentry is a primary focus.

    • @FireStormOOO_
      @FireStormOOO_ 3 місяці тому +7

      The latter problem would be kind of shocking; that's something that should've been nailed down decently close during design of the vehicle. It wouldn't be surprising to see them explore exactly how much margin they have for losing tiles without things melting at some point. It makes a pretty big difference, e.g. for rapid reuse and not repeating the fate of the space shuttle, if losing 2 adjacent tiles threatens the vehicle vs if it can survive loosing a dozen+ in one area.

    • @3gunslingers
      @3gunslingers 3 місяці тому +3

      On this trajectory they can´t even really test the heat shield.
      So whether or not the tiles detach will make no difference to the ship surviving reentry or not. It does not get hot enough to fully compromise the steel tank walls.
      The real test is the hypersonic stability and steer-ability of the ship.

    • @ReinReads
      @ReinReads 3 місяці тому

      They have already begun design work of starship version 2. The data they gather from these test, including the heat shield, will influence the design.
      If burning up on re-entry is the only issue that’s not an issue. Worst case scenario in that case is learning plenty more from 3 more launches of version 1 even if they all burn up. Version 2 will likely fly before the end of the year. They are not planning on trying to catch a booster or land a starship until after v2 has flown a few times.

    • @QuantumHistorian
      @QuantumHistorian 3 місяці тому +6

      @@FireStormOOO_ True, but aerodynamic modelling at hypersonic speeds is notoriously difficult and unreliable. It's difficulty was a major problem with the shuttle throughout it's life, and starship's belly flop is rather shuttle-esque. It's also problematic design-wise because it's the _last_ thing you can test. You can do static fire tests of engines, but you can't do ground tests of hypersonic re-entry. Which means that you have to work on getting everything else working near-perfectly, and only then can you see if there are serious issues with it.
      I have no doubt that fuel sloshing and the like could be fixed with minor changes relatively easily. But if there big problems with re-entry? Back to the drawing board. That's why I see it as the only major question mark remaining as to Starship's viability as a vehicle, it's the only place where near insurmountable (or surmountable only with serious compromises) difficulties might remain.

    There's basically no chance it will survive reentry and SpaceX surely knows it. Almost entirely because the tiles along the seams are still glued on, and it's understood perfectly well that those tiles will likely entirely fall off. What I'm keen to know is whether the remote splashdown location means there won't be vehicles in the air on hand to document the event visually. For the first two flights, they had these ready to go, but then that was reasonably close to Hawaii. I still want to see that footage.

      I've not heard anything about it, but they _could_ send aircraft to Diego Garcia or the Maldives...

    • @Asterra2
      @Asterra2 3 місяці тому

      @@simongeard4824 Exactly. You would think this would be important enough for it. Even if the connection between Starship and Starlink remains good, that'll stop the moment it begins reentry, and it will never come back because the ship will quickly transition to fireball. I _really_ hope they have this figured out.
