2016, I just bought my own 4tb my cloud. I made the mistake of connecting my 2tb external drive with my movies and music to a pc (usb 2.0 pc) and transferring. Took the whole night to transfer just my series (200GB). I then watched this video and realised that it will be quicker to connect it directly to the drive. The drive is great. I have 3 computers and 2 phones in the house and we can all stream videos at the same time with no problems (over 802.11n WiFi).
Hi Lon, I'm pretty sure you were mounting MyCloud using APF protocol while performing this test, so I suggest to mount it using SMB, specially that the MyCloud Samba version supports SMB2, so you'll get double that speed for sure. just give it a try you'll be amazed For anyone who doesn't know how to mount MyCloud using SMB Mac: In Finder, press COMMAND + K, then set the server address to something like 'smb://192.168.0.103' where '192.168.0.103' is your MyCloud IP
Thanks Lon! Just started a transfer via that method and it seems to be improved, though as you note in your review there's no progress bar to see the speed. Dumb question - even using the desktop app, does it matter if that computer is connected wireless or not? It's a laptop. Thanks for the quick response!
Lon, another great review. Thumbs up! But you kind of breezed through the actual process to get the device to work. If you buy it and turn it on, then connect it to your router, will it always work? I saw you have to enter a URL, and perhaps a password etc. But after that point dies it appear as another driver letter under windows on a local network? And if you add a user, the same for them? (Your videos are great but a bit Apple centric)
I accept that wireless performance is dependent on a lot of factors, but if I am able to get up to 2 MB per second from the internet to which I'm connected wirelessly through the same router as the WD is connected to, is 0,5 then not painfully slow? Any known low hanging fruit to improve performance? Thx for this and the review btw. I really liked them.
I have been using Pogoplug for years, now considering a NAS like you demonstrated. By the way, I am interested in knowing what you were running on the tablet while doing demos - it appeared to be an integral part of the demo
No wifi benchmarks? We live this day and age where everything is pretty much wireless. Would be awesome if you could do some wifi becnhmarks. I'm really keen on getting one of these myself but the reviews for this device has been really poor, so I'm a bit reluctant...
My current environment, Cat 5 using a gigabit router (Motorola NVG589), produces some decent transfer. The problem I seem to run into is when using the WD My Cloud software. I copy large files (movies - .mts extension) from windows explorer to the WD My Cloud Software via drag and drop. A window displays the files being transferred. It seems those that are 100 MB I don't have much problems but those over that amount I experience problems often. I'm seeing the transfer often pausing for a few seconds and longer and then starting again. And very often most files aren't copied resulting in "Could not copy ...mts". So I have to sit here and monitor and then drag and drop them again. Anybody else experiencing this issue? I consider it enough reason to return the device if I can't find a solution. I've also seen files start and then once to 120 MB stop and restart the transfer only to restart again once to 120MB. Am I doing something wrong!
I am interested in latency. When I am not using it as a cloud, how does it compare to a regular USB3 external drive as a frequently accessed drive? Thanks!
Hi Lon. I have a USB 3.0 drive connected to the USB port on the back of my 3TB My Cloud. I copy/pasted a large group of files (134GB) to go from the USB drive to the My Cloud and am getting transfer speeds of less than 2 megabites per second. Which is gonna take forever! I have a new Apple Airport Extreme, a PakEdge gigabit switch, so not sure where the hitch is. Any theories?
Hi Lon, i have just purchased this but have a couple of questions when i open the folder for pics i cannot see a preview of the pics on my smart tv and when im watching downloaded movies it wont work on my lg smart tv it says unknown format or invalid file. sometimes it will play and then suddenly stop with this message. they all play fine from laptop through the wireless network on smart tv but wont on wd. please can you help
Roku box is that like a wd box as that has been suggested by currys where we got mycloud from. Strange thing is they played fine on tv before hand. Also how do I get my wives videos off her iphone 4s to the mycloud as all it picks up is pics and shes got over 500 videos on there thank you for your assistance
Hi Lon! I have a question. I'm trying to transfer files from my LaCie USB3.0 external hard drive via the USB 3.0 slot on the MyCloud, but it takes like 4 hours to transfer 60GB... How can it be so slow? When I connect the hard drive to my MBP with USB 3.0, it takes me 10 minutes to transfer 60 GB.. Could you give me some kind of explanation as to why this is that slow? Thanks!
***** I'm copying through the Mac interface, through Finder... I've just tried doing that with SSH, and that takes like 4 minutes for 15GB... Why is it that it's so slow if I do it via Finder, but mindblowingly fast via SSH?
To Bipin: how in the world are you getting those speeds? I have high speed internet, a fast router and high quality switch, and despite using the desktop app as recommended, I get about 3mbps. It is painful. And this is with a WD Passport USB3 drive connected to the MyClouds usb3 port. Your experience seems unique for this product!
Scott Wallace make sure you are using either CAT5e or CAT6 cable, and a gigabit ethernet switch or router.....also make sure your pc can support gigabit.....i can get 100MB/s write and 110 MB/s read on the 3tb my cloud
***** And what do you think about the lacie cloudbox? they have the wuala software but in their website talks about pricing for storage... i don´t really get it... but it says it syncs folders... im looking for something to substitute my 100gb dropbox subscription..
***** Nice review man. You can work around this issue by mapping the drive to the computers that you need to sync, you'll have them under computer in Windows and on the desktop for Mac. Again, thanks for the quality work man.
Thanks for the follow up review. Confirms my experiences with wifi, that I need to be on my wired gigabit connection with my Macbook Air. What is interesting however is my TV with dNLA on 5ghz N wifi, browses through folders and displays content much faster than my Mac navigating with the Finder on the same wifi network. The media server functionality is very snappy.
For me, both upload to the drive and download from it remain between 55 and 71 MB/s and surprisingly, uploads are usually faster. Even remote downloads from the drive reach about 8MB/s without using any download accelerators. WD My Cloud 3TB.
CAT 5e is suppose to be 1000 Mb/sec; 1000/8 = 125 MB/s (bytes per second) so if I'm getting just barely over 6MB/s, something is wrong everything is wire, NOT wireless.
I have a fast Belkin router; The WD MyCLoud drive is connected direct to back of router (port #4) Im connected to my local internet via CAT6. Except there is a gigabit ethernet switch that is inbetween, Im doing a data transfer now, a copy and it is ranging from 5.6-6.1 MB/second It says estimated time to transfer 125 GB = 6 hours 30 minutes that's really a very long time
***** Hi Lon, I mis-spoke, it is a Netgear R6300 - its gigabit. Shortly after I posted I picked up Lan Test software and it said I'm getting 79-80 Mb/s. I checked the Broadcom NIC: Its gigabit; I updated firmware. I have slower 5400rpm diskdrive Something is limiting this to 100Mb/s, Im not getting the 1000. I did log into the router and it looks ok. path from router to laptop router port 4 of router gigabit ethernet switch laptop path of router to WDMY cloud drive router WDMY Cloud As no kidding, I just found bottleneck as I typed the path configurations above. the ethernet switch next to my laptop maxes out at 100! I need to go shopping.
In conclusion, I like the drive except for a couple annoyances: 1) when I restart or turn on the laptop, I'm unable to connect to the drive; This is because the Windows7 OS prompts me for a network password; Still haven't figured this out and it did match the login/password for my laptop; and articles on internet were confusing this issue with the wireless network password, which is not the same. 2) the first name, last name, and email subscriptions is limited. That is I have multiple email addresses and would like to have registered them all with my same first and last name.
***** whilst the my cloud itself is really fast, I also have a usb 3.0 my book 3tb plugged directly into it, and this configuration is extremely slow, 2 days to back up the 1.5 Tb of data that was on my cloud, any suggestions? have you come across this issue?

One quick question, what is the interface of the drive inside the enclosure? SATA III or SATA II?
