So passionate about his drumming and music. Love listening to Kenny speak. Thanks!
Thanks ever so much
This guy is great. I see why he gets so much incredible work. He is funny, has an amazing understanding of music, and knows how to work with people. Must be great on tour. There's so much to learn from people like this.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer that's the point...
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer how many records will i find your name on? thats what i thought.. Kenny has played with everyone from Marsalis to Mustaine...
you play in your basement.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer you're an idiot. Try trolling someone stupid enough to fall for it.
And lots of drugs... don't forget the drugs.
I met him in the 80's he was cool. I watch him more now. He's Awesome. Keep rocking Kenny.
Warren is such a pro. He is completely on page with this expert, Kenny. Not to trash other guests who have been nice enough to come on, but you notice some of the young guys have a ton of gear, without really knowing the equipment. When Warren talks to other veteran pros, you see an awesome kinship with their craft.
I'm not even an engineer, but a classical composer. But I absolutely LOVE these videos. They are incredibly inspiring. Such a cool art form all you guys do. Very impressive.
When I read Internet forums, most of what I get is these ditzy, stuck-up people being too technical and elitist with their gear knowledge, and that negative vibe makes learning new things very tiring and overwhelming. Then comes Warren to the rescue and brings these seasoned pros to our screens and here they are, humbly gushing out intel and more intel about their gear and sound and it makes acquiring new knowledge so much fun and rewarding. Blessings to you, Warren. Maybe it's second nature to you, maybe not such a big deal because, well, you are THE Warren Huart himself, but what you do is extremely meaningful to us thirsty ones who don't know people in the professional world and are always seeking new, proven knowledge. You sharing your ample, diverse knowledge and experience with such transparency and humility and also doing these fantastic interviews is something amazing. I would definitely give you a warm hug if I saw you!
AW shucks thanks very much!! You Rock!! Yes I'm just a kid in candy store like everyone else, I love music and I love making it!! Thank you very much for your extremely kind words!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This right here is why I keep coming back to your video series, Warren. It's the balance of common sense advice, and tips from guys with real working experience. Fantastic.
HI Howard Hedger that's very kind of you! I really appreciate it! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
There he is... One of my favourite drummers...!
Thanks a lot Warren you are THE man...!
Hi +thebarcodestv Aw shucks! Kenny Rules!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
The right cymbals and how you hit them are so important when recording. I wish more drummers understood this. Also, consistent volume on the kick and snare allow you to use the compressor just for tones and not for trying to tame volumes so much.
Also, Tama drums are so great. For years I had vintage Slingerland and Rogers drums, but I picked up a set of birch Starclassics (12, 16, 24) and I'll never buy another vintage kit again. They sound SO good, and the hardware is strong and reliable. I still like vintage snares for the most part, I usually use a Gene Krupa chrome over brass Slingerland although I'm mostly a guitarist these days. I like to have my drums around for recording guys with crappy kits though.
This guy is great and totally gets it.
Hi +Ian Galloway Agreed 100%! A well balanced Drummer is worth their weight in gold! Thanks very much for your kind comment! Glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Kenny Aronoff: Incredibly genial, knowledgeable, humble, proficient and talented. A remarkable combination.
I'd love to hang out with this guy!
Thanks for this, Warren--another invaluable glimpse behind the curtain!
KENNY ARONOff; Possibly the best session drummer alive today. I feel privileged to have listened to some insights of the man's techniques and equipment. Legend!
Kenny is a true pro, always recording, writing charts, and touring and playing live, he lives, eats, and breathes drums 💪
The Great Kenny Aronoff is apt. He's such a great drummer to look up to.
Absolutely!!
Man, Kenny Arnoff is a badass, I had no idea. Thanks for interviewing him. The point that really resonates with me is knowing what you're doing to the finest detail, and being a decent and affable human being to the people around to you move things upward. What a great conversation.
Hi +monkey dangus Aw shucks thanks! Yes Kenny is amazing!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I just started to record my live drums and of course this particular topic comes a long way. I recently subscribed to your channel because I love your in-depth explanations, reviews, interviews, etc. But the one thing I love the most is that you pay a lot of attention to drum recording and mixing approaches. Paired with your skills and experience as a producer, that’s is exactly why I value your channel so much over any other other channels out here. Just wanted to say Thanks! Because I’m learning a lot!
First opportunity to hear the great Kenny Aronoff speak. We all know about his recording and performing credits, but this interview reveals him to be an interesting and thoughtful individual. Of course he knows everything about percussion (interesting that his study with Vic Firth on tympani taught him how to draw the music out of the drum rather than beating into the drum in hopes of producing musical sounds), equipment and manufacturing history, recording, and ensemble playing. But this interview was most helpful in showcasing Kenny Aronoff the human being and hence Kenny Aronoff the artist. Well done, gentleman.
He’s so right about 15’’ hihats. I’ve played 13’s, 14’s. 15’s seem to blend much better with a kit.
Indeed, Kenny also plays the snare very aggressively so a louder hat makes a lot of sense. He really makes the snare stand out! No one better at that
WOW! I always thought I HATED Cymbals, but watching this I realized I had just never been in the room with a really great drummer before. 😄Amazing video, as always!
I just met Kenny last week. He came to Snow College and did drum masterclasses and a nice Q&A. He's such a cool guy!!
I play guitar, but I really loved Kenny's recent book. The guy's had an amazing career, an incredible work ethic.
glad I watched the whole thing. the last point was above and beyond almost anything else you could say about music production, performing, or as elaborated on ... just about anything in life that's worth doing well.
another great vid. thx
What a total pro. Great to hear a drummer talking about adapting to the session on so many levels. That sensitivity and flexability is key.
Smashing Pumpkins were one of my favorite groups growing up, so anyone who can sit in for Chamberlin is alright in my book!
Hi joereesemusic thanks for the great comment! Yes Kenny rules, so great to work with someone who really gets it and there for the artist and the song! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
i really thought he was different! such an amazing talented and versatile drummer!
you can tell he loves music because after his session he is still moving his sticks.
its so amazing looking at the very bests and see that they still love music so much!
and its the same with you! thank you very much for everything you do for us!!!
Hi +federico aka voxa on the road You're most welcome!! I'm so glad to be able to help! Kenny rules, great guy and amazing talent! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I love the energy Kenny has for the instrument. Thank you so much for the video!! Lots of great tips.
Hi +Horizen3872 Agreed Kenny rules! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I saw Kenny do a clinic in Louisville in the 90s. He gave me a Vic Firth signature stick I still have. Kenny's the best....🥁🤘
I love listening to Kenny A. talk about drumming. He also has better solo chops than I had seen before this video. Great stuff.
Hi +Redeye Percussion Yes Kenny Rules! Happy New Year!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great video! Kenny is a legend.
Those tom sounds, maaan...
Agreed the Toms sound amazing!!!
Ati Shephard
Agreed...his tuning is immaculate. Great ears and decades of experience.
Kenny Aronoff is one of the most informative and generous musicians period. I am always amazed by his playing with Jim Beard etc Really Great Stuff!
Hi +ceri mccoy Agreed Kenny rules!! Great player and great guy!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Kenny's great, a proper heads-down, no nonsense musician in his area. Loads of character, will drop in the odd unexpected line that you're just unready for, dedictaed, skilfull, funny, hard-working, and still he sounds surprised he's got the gig - ha ha! Enjoyed the other video with him, too - dude!
Kenny’s living THE DREAM!!
When I was going in for surgery the surgeon said that I was at a good weight. He said that the people that were really heavy and the people that were skinny were more difficult to operate on. So, what you said makes sense Kenny.
How did I miss this video?? Great one! Kenny is awesome, lots of personality and a wealth of knowledge. Warren I love that you take a lot of time to talk to musicians about recording and sound, as opposed to solely focusing on the engineering side of things. Great sound starts at the source! Cheers!!
Hi +Kevin Dietz Yes Kenny rules!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Totally agree with Kenny about using bigger hats! I love my 15" K light hats. Always seem to blend better with my kit when I'm mixing.
Again, enjoyed this! Thanks for your time doing this, Kenny and Warren!
Hi +Duane Bonney Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I had the privilege of having a couple of e-mail exchanges with Kenny about 11 years ago. Very nice, down-to-Earth guy! And that snare sounds fantastic!
Hi +Matt W Great stuff! Yes Kenny is a great guy!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Evans Heavy weight heads are beyond All! I appreciate other drum head companies as well. Evans simply nailed it. Durability, Integral Tone, and classic look . The most important aspect the retain their quality in every genre you play.
Hi Everyone, please check out the latest Produce Like A Pro video with Warren Huart talking to Kenny Aronoff at Sunset Sound. Kenny gives us a load of great tips! Please let me know what you think! Many thanks Warren

I've been a big fan of Kenny since he filled in for Smashing Pumpkins way back when.
When I bought my first Tama kit there was a video tape included with Kenny and a few others showing us how to set up and tune the drums. I was blown away by his video segments.
I'd love to record such a versatile drummer who knows his shit!
Those snare drums look awesome! and I love die-cast hoops! Great job guys!
David Curtis Drumming
Wow. Kenny Aronoff! Seen him many time, mostly with Mellencamp. "Lead" drummer.
Yes incredible drummer and great guy Fezzler61! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Kenny is my spirit animal!!!
What a gracious dude, legendary.!
One of my favorite interviews. Kenny knows sound! Co-Produce with him if you have the opportunity.
Fogerty, Mellencamp, Seger. Theres tons more, but those 3 names alone is a legend of a resume in itself. Can't beat Kenny!!
this is a quality episode. those drums sound seriously frikin good. !!!
Hi +kingdizzyworld Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes Kenny Rules!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I have a lot to learn from this man! Thanks for that video!
SICK! You dudes need to put together a Kenny Aronoff drum sample pack!!!!
Hi Mat Melton! Yes Kenny is amazing! Haha I'll talk to him about it! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
One of my favs since john cougar mellencamp days
Warren, thank you so much for this. My only complaint is the interview ended way too soon. God bless you!
Thanks ever so much
what a killer drummer and funny friendly guy, he'd be a blast to play with and record. cheers!
This was FANTASTIC! Thank you!
Was great to get a look at Kenny's chart. Deep in your memory Warren, do you remember if the drum track for More Than Enough (the chart Kenny holds up) was created during the session or if it was born out of a programmed drum track and then "Kenny'd-up"?
Kenny knows his stuff. Nice drum tips from a pro.
Hi Logan Riley, yes Kenny Aronoff is an amazing drummer and so ready to help others! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Saw him live once. Man he is a hard hitter! Bonham got his sound from Buddy Rich. A 26" bass drum with 2 felt strips, 1/3 the way in, no port, with a wood beater would knock you over. I know why Ken likes that old Ludwig bass drum. Same constuction as my '48 Radio King. Really nice with FiberSkyns. Very close to Calf.
Kenny is one of the BEST rock and all around drummers around. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be on so many recordings.
Agreed 100%!! Thank YOU very much!
great vid to watch, as a hip hop beatmaker it gives me more insight about the drummer and his drumkit.
Thanks very much! Glad to be able to help! Yes, indeed Kenny Rules! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
wow, the tuning on those toms is gorgeous...
Hi +Tyler Mays Agreed Kenny tunes them really well! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Love the tone of those 15" hats. Actually all of those Armand's sound great.
Hi +andrewt248 I agree they sound great! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Captivating and wonderfully informative. Any thoughts on putting the kick drum hole in the center of the head versus off axis?
Hi +Bryce Hodge Great question! I have always preferred the sound pointing at the beater from a gentle angle! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Generally, putting a hole dead center (or *anywhere* on the drum if the hole is bigger than 6” diameter) is like having no front head at all. If it’s a smaller (
Wonderful and helpful video! I took a lot of notes! 🙏
Fantastic!!
Thank you very much guys.
Loved this! Thank you
Thanks ever so much!!
Just found your channel, loved this episode with Kenny, great drummer. Subscribed!
Mr. A. is the man with the plan. His skills are insane!

Hi Dis Inc without a doubt! Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren
Warren,Your videos are so damn helpful! Thanks a
ton for that! :)
Kenny is the coolest drummer on earth 🌏
He def has an unmistakable feel that you recognise. Cool Cat
God i love your videos and i love Kenny! One of my biggest dreams is to produce something with him on the drums :D
a good trick I have heard several drummers do for a more crisp and warmer sounding hi-hat is to use the bottom as the top and vice versa...seems that whenever I hear a really great sounding hihat I ask the drummer what they used and it would be reversing top and bottom
Hi +tweevers2 Great tip! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Amazing drummer.
kenny is such a legend.
Hi +marcus mcc Agreed!! Kenny rules!! Have a marvellous time reaching and mixing, many thanks Warren
Cool video too, i studied a sound engineering along with music at school years ago. I play drum kit myself and have watched Kenny play for a long time. (I should have taken the music path) You create some great videos, keep up the good work.
Hi +marcus mcc Thanks very much! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren!
Great info guys Thanks!
Hi Tom MacDonald I really appreciate it! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
I bought my first pair of Premier CC from Maxwell's in Woking, Surrey, England. Did you ever shop there, Warren?
Unfortunately not! I worked at Kingfisher in Fleet and Anderson’s in Guildford!
The more I hear Kenny speak and play; the more I like him.
Kenny Aronoff is the man and still for some reason reminds me of Casey Jones from the TMNT movie
Kenny's is one of the most amazing drummers! What a great outlook on things. Loved the SNL story.
Brilliant how scary Google is. I was just thinking about Kenny yesterday
and this video popped up as a recommendation.
watch "the social dilemma" on Netflix and you'll see just how scary it really is..
Thanks ever so much Jon!
Great one, Warren! Thanks.
Thanks Linwood Bell! Yes Kenny Aronoff is the man! Amazing! Had an amazing time at Sunset Sound. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro He could very well be the best in the world at hitting something with a stick.
Agreed Linwood Bell easily one of the best drummers in the world without a doubt! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, first i'd like to say that i really love your videos! it's always a class about studio.
i have a question about drum tuning, if you can help me...
Do you like to tune the tons as an specific note, or just with good range between the tons, like 4th or 3th...or you just let the drummer choose it??
I work basically in studio as a drummer in brazil, and this is a very big question for me every time...
thank you!! i hope to met you someday in usa!!
Eli
Hi +Eli Jr That's a fantastic question! It depends, sometimes I tune the kit to the key, but most of the time I just make them sound good and make sure the pitch when audible is complimentary to the song! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Kenny - I'm a chart writer myself in depth- dude I love doing it.
David Curtis Drumming
His bio shows that he is EXTREMELY educated in his craft. I like that.
People say Neil Peart is the best drummer in the world. And I say Yes he is for the band RUSH. But Kenny is great with anyone! He is more than just a Great drummer. The guy lives his life to be great! He is in shape, He is a trouble shooter! He knows how sound works, Easy to get along with, And knows how to serve a song!
That's very cool of you! Yes, Kenny is great and a wonderful guy as well!
Niel peart lol. He needs to first learn how to play one drum.
Good video. Kenny is 1 of my favorite drummers. I know he is a session drummer just not with so many bands. Must be nice. lol
Thanks ever so much Don! Agreed Kenny is a wonderful drummer!
Just bought the 14x5 Trackmaster with brass hoops. Have tried the die cast hoop from my friend’s Starclassic. Well, I’ll go with the original one- more melodic, more vintage, more magic, more overtones, more colours, .... Nothing against the die cast hoop, maybe later I will go with one, but only on the top( the last releases come with die cast on both sides). And one more advice- don’t try the 42 strands wires- doesn’t work. The snare bed is small and narrow.
Anybody know the sizes of his cymbals by any chance? He’s such a monster player! Thank you Warren for letting us in to your world! Have a blessed day!
NICE! luv kenny!
Great video as always Warren. I'm curious as to why the top rack Tom mic is almost touching the head?
Hi +Greg Patterson Great question! The 421 is around 2-3 inches from the head, that's where it sounded the best and gave use the best rejection from the cymbals, there is also a bottom rack mic as well. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Haha we must have different ideas of centimetres and inches! If you watch the toms move when he hits them they swing at least 2cms! I suppose one persons 2cm is another 2inches! That sounds like a 'that's what she said' moment! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Awesome insight.
6:40 - 7:10 is pure wisdom!
Damn, Kenny is so cool!!!
Those toms!!!
Are md421's your usual choice for toms? Also what preamps where you running them through? Thanks!
Top ;) at all levels :) Thank you.
Great video, Warren! I love hearing insight from a studio giant like Kenny. It's funny that he brought up the sports analogy at the end because I ran into him at Manny's in NYC many years ago and we were talking about football (the American type) and the Patriots. He really is a nice guy.
Hi Neal Armstrong, yes agreed Kenny Aronoff is amazing, really talented but also so generous with his time. Yes being a team player is such an important part of what we do! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Got those sticks...signed! 😊
...they are broken, which makes it even better!
bad ass ....thanks warren...
Hi +Lance Allan Thanks very much! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
What do you recommend for basic studio monitors?
Hi Jacob Toohey thanks for the question. It would really depend on your budget, there a lot of powered monitors out there that are reasonably priced. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
I believe every thing Kenny says
