OK, for Gunnera x cryptica. It's an awesome plant. I have it since 2011 and I love it. I will talk about this name on my channel to my polish viewers.

I know some people got a little sensitive about the last video 😂 i checked my two gunnera again after that video - one is definitely a tinctoria (compact, red flower spike) whilst the other is almost certainly a cryptica (more lose and open flower spike, but some red colouring)

Gunnera magellanica and perpensa are good groundcovers too if you don't have the space for a big one.

Hi kris. I think unless you have a Gunnera Cryptica growing away in your garden, it will always be confusing 🤷‍♂️. When you truly have one, it is very clear what you are explaining.
Sorry for sending you the pdf, it’s caused more confusion 🤷‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤣🤣

From Wikipedia : Gunnera × cryptica is a hybrid between Gunnera manicata and Gunnera tinctoria. Both species were introduced into cultivation in Western Europe towards the end of the 19th century. The hybrid occurred spontaneously in cultivation, in Europe probably around 1873. Both morphological and molecular analyses have shown that plants widely cultivated in Britain and Ireland under the name Gunnera manicata were all the hybrid, and that the true species G. manicata is no longer found there. This situation may also be the case in Europe and other parts of the world. The hybrid is more resistant to frost and adverse conditions than G. manicata, which is likely to be why it has replaced it in cultivation.

I have Tinctoria and ‘Mannicata’in my garden in Cornwall. Both fabulous varieties. Have the plants in the Scillies been identified as they have an even milder climate. It would be sad if there are some original remaining plants which are not identified and protected.

That's a good point. It really depends when Gunnera was introduced to the Scilly Islands. I don't know if the current plants were tested or not.

@@YorkshireKRIS Tresco Gardens opened in 1834. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they still existed there.

I just watched your video. i have bought several plants which were labelled as manicata but only to discover they are tinctoria. I know that tinctoria is now banned in the UK. Do you know anywhere I can a genuine manicata or cryptica

I have been trying to buy a manicata for many years. I have bought several plants only to later discover its a tinctoria. anyone have a manicata or cryptica for sale or know an honest reliable supplier

As tinctoria and cryptica shouldn't be sold now its difficult to say who, if anyone will be selling them

The same happens with Washingtonia. It's almost impossible to find a true Washingtonia filifera in Europe. You can find some very pure Washingtonia robusta (although most of them are hybrids), but not filifera, only very old specimens can be pure, and they are INCREDIBLE looking. In my town there are 2 pure Washingtonia robusta and a pure Washingtonia filifera (the three of them more than 100 years old), everything else are hybrids that look like robusta but with a wider stem. The funny thing is that there are some plants that germinated from the filifera and you can clearly see the differences.
