- This is the first video in a series of gravel bike upgrades to the Retrospec Harper Coaster single speed bike. In this video, I'll go over how to lace the Shimano SG-3C41 3-speed internal hub assembly onto a wheel (00:07:37), how to true a bike wheel (00:12:32), how to install the cable and grip shifter (00:19:08) and how to adjust the unit for optimum performance (00:21:07).

The faint clicking in 3rd speed is typical for this kind of hub (pawl override in "overdrive ").

man, can't tell you how much i appreciate this video. i'm looking to put the same hub on a single speed bike with similar deep-V 32-spoke wheel setup. i've been too intimidated to give it a shot but after seeing this i think it's doable!
That’s awesome! Maybe have a few extra slightly shorter spokes on hand, I had a few that I had to move around at the end, but it would have been convenient to just use a shorter spoke. The spoke tool was well worth getting, and the truing stand was very helpful getting the wheel round again. You can do it!

Very nice review, i did similar change in my custom stingray chooper but i did go to sturney archer 3 speed i got done a cnc disk brake adapter plate plus changed to a Btwin 36 tooth chaining ring with 170mm long paddle chrank from old 42t..now its gearing too smooth very obsessive performance...now i plan to add a Bafang bbsd n make it work commuter

Please note: the rear sprocket is lopsided for a reason. Flipping it around allows you to set the chain further or closer to the center at the rear in order for it to be as straight as possible front to back (chainline adjustment).

You got extremely lucky with the existing spokes. I've always had to buy new spokes because the Hub flange diameters being hugely different. Also, after re-lacing I get a bit lazy and will drop my wheel off at my local favorite bike shop to have it trued for $20. I'll hang out an window shop while it's getting trued and end up buying other gear lol.
Oooh... oh and support your local bike shops. I know the internet is convenient but you can learn a lot from pros at the shops.

I like this hub, put one on an old cruiser bike and it made a world of difference.
The biggest cost to do this conversion would be having your LBS re-lace the wheel with the hub. If you think you can do it yourself, that would be ideal. Also, he forgot to mention that you need to have the stationary nut when you attach the wheel. It is here at 18:04 , that little yellow nut. This keeps the axle and hub stationary in the dropout, while the rear cog turns freely. Should be included with the shifter and cable.
One thing to consider is gearing. If you have a heavy cruiser bike, the 44t front crank with a 16t or 18t rear cog that typically comes on a cruiser might be too high. You'll find maybe you can't use 3rd gear at all. I changed from the stock 44t/16t to a 36t front crank and 21t rear cog. That made 3rd gear function the way the bike rode stock, so that means I have stock riding gear plus two lower gears -- perfect.
One other thing: these hubs really do well on a bike with horizontal dropouts, like the one used in this video. If you put on a bike with vertical dropouts, like a hybrid or road bike, you are going to need a chain tensioner. You could use an old rear derallieur, or they sell them on Amazon or bike supply outlets. Just look for a spring-loaded chain tensioner.

Mike, a question, I have an old folding bike,a 3 speed sturmey archer that has a pin going in the hub that pulls by the gear mech. Would this Nexus one fit my bike? It is a universal uni sport fold up bike, maybe from early to mid 1980s
@@justmadeit2 I think so. the Nexus needs 122-125mm in the rear dropouts, so not as much as other hubs. Just get a caliper or tape measure and make sure the rear dropouts have at least 120mm spacing. If the rear dropouts are not aluminum is not a problem if you have to cold set them a millimeter or two.

ya mine had a 44t front gear. Because of how I ride I'd already changed that out for a 32t and managed to revive a beat up mongoose with the hand-me-down. Spent twenty bucks getting a cruiser seat and a pair of grips and didn't feel terrible donating it to a church for auction/donations. Granted I don't feel GREAT about it given everything that thing needs but like... it will ride it can be ridden and it isn't a horrifying death machine.
I replaced the 16t cog to a an 18t and it made such a difference it’s so great to ride

Just finally found a single piece of a black alfine 8 speed gear hub from bike 24 and immediately bought it. Didn't seem to come with the shifter so I took one with it. I ve been looking for one for months now.
So bizarre. Not sure what’s up with these things getting scarce. It’s a wonderful little addition to any single speed. It’s probably just another victim of the current global shipping crisis, and I would expect inventory to come back at some point.
can you use any shifter? I'm looking forward to putting an IGH on my fauxie but idk if i could fit the included shifter on a dropbar

Thx dude I had a frame needing wheels. Then I found three more bikes took what I had made 2 more bikes. Still had one bike I really wanted to get going then I finally gotten wheels. Unfortunately they were 2 fronts. I kept look for months online ppl wanted price for old junk I couldn't see spending what new ones called for. One morning I said Y can't I take a hub off a smaller wheel... put it on a bigger wheel. No One has a hub lace video only u so thx. I was curtin I was going to follow a non hub lace. Well thank u peace
I recently got new bike with the Nexus and a belt drive. Because my Nexus was clicking like in the video, I realized it was out of adjustment. Because it doesn't click unless you are riding, it took several adjustments to it get it right. Of course riding it maladjusted will soon cause damage.
Worst case you just have to ride with headphones in.
Taco'd the rear rim on my walmart cruiser. I actually LIKE the bike but like.... cheap wheels on a heavy frame. Frame is shockingly solid and it feels comfortable to be on. Considering getting a two or three gear coaster since it seems nobody is selling a 27.5 with rim brake surfaces. Plus going to a double wall might be a good idea. Keep the front brake because frotn brake isn't a bad idea.
Ha! Taco’d gives the perfect visual. If you are planning on lacing in a geared hub, just make sure you get a rim with the same or as close to the same number of spoke holes as the hub. Maybe get the hub first, then look for a compatible rim.

My favorite part about this hub is the instant gear change. No derailleur lag switching into gears. Might want to watch your cable routing though. I run mine under frame,bb, and bottom of chainstay. Few zip ties does the trick. Your probably good though. If it works, don't fix it.
Yep, it great! Now if I can just remember which way to twist the thing. I was terrible at first, now I only rarely downshift when upshifting. The trick that’s been working is to pretend it’s a motorcycle grip when I’m accelerating.

In fact the off-centered gear and the cap allows multiple gear offset options. In other words, do whatever fits the bike! :D

It would’ve been helpful if you gave details on how to push the three speed clicker onto the axle, as you know, it’s spring loaded and has to be pushed in all the way, held against the axle nut, then simultaneously the Allen set screw tightened for it to work properly.

Nice! The spoke issue threw me for a bit of a loop at first. Be prepared to move some spokes around, I had some that were loose and couldn’t be tightened. Also, the truing stand was a godsend.
In the process of restoring and old e-bike and the prospect of rebuilding better than the original appeals to me. I replaced the original external motor/chain with a front wheel hub motor. But for pedaling without assistance this geared hub looks really neat. Is the greater torque a result of having to pedal harder or does it make it easier to pedal?
Cool project! The top gear (3) is essentially the same ratio as the original single speed. The lower gears (2 and 1) make it easier to climb hills by making it easier to pedal but my legs are moving much faster.
Please make a video about 5 Shimano Nexus for ebikes.
Shimano Nexus 5 is a hub gear system so are you talking about a mid-drive electric bike with a Nexus 5 hub gear? In theory it's possible, but if you have a mid-drive e-bike then you likely have a better traditional gear/derailleur system already installed. Let me know if I'm missing the question.
Hey, great video. I'm planning on getting this on a old route bike I'm restoring. You said your bike has 120mm of space Right and the manufacturer recommended 130mm. Mines has exactly 120mm. Could you tell me if it will fits comparing with yours?

Yes it fits 120mm well. I only had to spread the forks a little bit (by hand). I looked into doing a restore and found replacement bike parts to be way higher than expected. So I ended up going with the inexpensive Retospec. Restorations are fun tho, lots of personality in those bikes. Best of luck!

@@blunteddful FYI: Shimano sells three-gear models in different sizes, e.g. sg-3d55 is 135mm so it fits disc brake bikes, sg-3r40 and sg-3c41 are in both 127 and 120mm versions, and all of them have various possibilities of hole counts - e.g. the one i got was 36 holes, but 32 holes were also possible.

Thanks. If you’re wondering if a hub gear can be used with a disc brake, the answer is yes. I’d recommend getting the non-coaster brake version (no brake arm) vs trying to disable the coaster brake.

I already have a bike that has a Shimano Nexus 3S named United Trifold 3 and it doesn't have a brake arm fortunately.
The next question is how do I determine the right size of 6 bolts since I don't have the courage to remove the internal gear from my bike?

Oh so you have a geared hub and you want to replace the rim brake with disc brakes? I initially wanted a front disc brake but realized my bike didn’t have the required mounting points for the disc calipers. First make sure your bike can accommodate disc brakes then I think you’ll want to look into getting a locking ring and a 6-bolt adapter ring. Sorry I’m not more help, I haven’t actually tried to do it. The cost and hassle savings if the rim brake was to much to ignore.
What did you do about the extra spoke length? Even with the clearance in the rims it looked like they'd need shortening.
Truing the wheel helped those spots a bit. No issues yet, so I guess there was plenty of clearance.

Yes, it was a great addition to the bike and is still going strong! While the bike frame height is generous the frame length is a bit short so if they have the next size up available I’d get that. Always better to have it a touch bigger than smaller.
I have the same bike, does the coasting and braking feel change at all with the Shimano hub?

I believe shimano makes a disc brake model that doesn’t have the coaster brake.
Whould this be possible with a 8speeds hub? I did some research and most fixie hubs are 120 mm while a shimano nexus 8s is 135 mm... maybe by streaching the frame a lil it fits. Then you will have the problem of the chain alignation, someone tried?
Not likely, the 3 speed fits perfectly and you have to spread the forks a bit. Maybe 5mm of additional room if you spread it to the max.
Good job brother would inform me maximum speed can we reach ? Did you tried 8 speed for the same company I mean Shimano . But unfortunately this type of gear is not available in our country (Iraq) we should import from USA Amazon , any how what type you recommend to buy and settle on the bike .

Hello, the hub gears have become hard to find in the US as well. I would have bought the 8-speed hub but I don’t think it would have fit the Harper bike, the 3-speed fits perfectly.
Dont understand why you got the coaster break version.Shimano sells one without.I prefer Sturmey Archer 3 speed.They are bullet proof good for 50k+miles and internals easy to work on and replace.
To be honest I probably didn’t do as much research as I should have. The bike originally had a coaster so I just got the coaster one. The coaster break is ok, takes some getting used to. I’m about to add a front rim break because I feel like the coaster break alone isn’t very safe. The coaster break is pretty fun for skids tho, takes me back to ‘89!
do you need a special pump for this? or some kind of adapter?
To pump up the tire? Just a standard presta valve pump. Many pumps nowadays can work with both types of valves, you just have to flip a small plastic piece in the pump head.

Hi! I have a doubt: how do you know the proper relation to put on the shimano nexus 3? I mean, i have 22 theet cassete from my single speed and choose those very carefully considering my rpm, strgent, etc.
It was pretty close to the stock sprocket but I ended up getting a slightly bigger one so my legs weren’t moving so much in 3rd gear.
I would seriously considered doing this if the weight in the back of the wheel is not effected. Meaning if I do the work to put this together will I now have a heavier wheel when in the most difficult gear that this provides? Is it going to be dead weight within he NexusIGh?
It didn’t seem to add any noticeable weight, and I am 100% happy with it and would do it again.
@@DIWHYDOTLIFE thanks for responding. I ask, because I once put on 23cm solid tires on the back wheel, and it was pure dead weight. And the bike normally is 20lbs, but it might as well have been a hundred after the switch. I took it off, and went back to air tires.

Is there a coaster brake 3-speed kickback hub that does not use a gear selector? My granddaughter has minimal finger motion and cannot shift with a twist grip, and cannot safely brake with hand breaks. I have thought about getting her an electric shift (
SRAM GX Eagle AXS Upgrade Kit), but that still leaves a problem with the brakes.
What about thumb shifters? That seems to be a thing.
@@DIWHYDOTLIFE That is why I looked at the SRAM GX Eagle AXS Upgrade Kit. It has a "thumb shifter." She has 7 digits, of which one thumb and one pinky are worthless. She was born that way. I attached a 3-inch lever to her right twist grip, and she can work that. The present department store mt bike has 3 chain rings and 6 cogs. She had been stopping by jumping off the bike until I worked on the brake, but she really needs more brakes than that. Is there a better thumb shifter I should consider? She is 18 and just started her first real job after HS. It is 8 miles away with about 177 feet of climbing going and 155 feet of climbing coming home. She weighs 85-90 pounds. Just a little girl. I could get her a motor for the front wheel, but I would prefer to get her into cycling. 8 Miles is not much of a ride once you get into it. I worked with a guy who rode 18 miles to and from work each day. I thought he was crazy until is started cycling. Now 18 miles is hardly worth getting my bike out.
The old Sturmey Archer 3-speed hubs used to have a big lever shifter.
Can 3 speed nexus gearbox be replaced with 7 speed one?
I think the 7-speed requires larger fork gap. If you got the room you could do a 7-speed.

Are you referring to the Core-Line series by State Bicycle Co? Since Retrospec and State bikes are very similar from a price and spec point, yes it should be possible.

Not that I’m aware of. There’s a 3-speed and a 7-speed but I think the 7-speed is too wide for the Retrospec forks.
You couldn’t buy a rim that already had the 3 speed hub on it?
That would have been plan C if I or a bike shop couldn’t get it working. I looked at pre-laced rims but I couldn’t find one that matched my front rim, so I would’ve had to buy two so it gets $$$ quickly.

The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

What about chain line ? What is the previous chain line distance and new chain line distance aftar nexus ? You shoul change the bottom bracket as I guess... I know, you are nor a bicycle mechanics but I am asking this for experts...

It could be a few different things. Try removing and reinstalling the wheel, keeping an eye on your chain tension. Then readjust the hub using the little adjustment knob thing. I hear the hub in 3rd gear but not so much in 2nd and very little in 1st.
..no use of a 3 speed, it has to be atleast 6 to 7 speed for a better and a more comfy ride for regular commutes.😥

You also want to DISCH the wheel. It can be true and round, but probably it is NOT centered. It's really fucking important.

I put on 32mm tires and there is a little more room, 35mm would likely fit, but nothing larger.
