Fractals: The Colors of InfinityThe Mandelbrot set -- someone has called it the thumb-print of God -- is one of the most beautiful and remarkable discoveries in the entire history of mathematics.
With Arthur C. Clarke as narrator and interviews with a number of notable mathematicians, including Benoît Mandelbrot, this program graphically illustrates how simple formulas can lead to complicated results: it explains the set, what it means, its internal consistency, and the revolutions in thought resulting from its discovery. Asked if the real universe goes on forever, Stephen Hawking defines its limit of smallness; the Mandelbrot set, on the other hand, may go on forever.
The invention of the silicon chip in the 1970′s created a revolution in computers and communication and hence transformed our way of life. We are now seeing another revolution which is going to change our view of the universe and give us a better understanding of its' working.
This film will explore the fractal universe and on our voyage of discovery, we will be helped by: Professor Ian Stewart of the Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick, an author of over 100 published scientific works; Dr. Michael Barnsley, former professor of mathematics at Georgia Institute of Technology who received a 2.5 million dollar government grant in 1991 to develop a fractal image compression systems.

I first encountered fractals in one of Arthur C. Clarke's novels, The Ghost of the Grand Banks, where some characters are involved with fractal technology and where the author makes continuous references to this tv show.

Wow! Massive implications for the future. As a boy, I had a large oak tree outside my third story window. Each year the branches would grow and sprout more branches that were similar but slightly different. This fascinated me and I can see this evolution in fractal geometry. So we can't say exactly what the new sprouts will look like, but using these equations we can predict what they may look like. This is exciting to contemplate in a world of straight and curved geometric figures.

Dr Mandelbrot may be wearing beige on beige but he thinks and sees in technicolor - I sincerely hope he was the one who picked the Pink Floyd soundtrack to match his infinite fractal dreamscape. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS. It is beautiful. 🎯

    Excellent!
Turtles all the way down at 4:45.
But endless striving is against nature. So, why real?

Why does one see fractals when on highLSD doses?

Becasue we already see Fractals everywhere we look daily especially outside of the house. So you see them exaggerated because of your bent perception by the drug.

Yep. That is the nature of modern day society. Instead of exploring the unknown wonders of the universe the majority prefer a fictional representation fed to them over and over in different forms. If you are astute enough you can predict the outcome of most cop shows on tv by just having watched one of them. The bad guys get caught by the actions of the hero. That is what the majority of us have been trained to enjoy. Sad.
