The thing that inspires me the most about Elfman is the fact that he's a self taught composer. His modern scores have lost a lot of the unique musical voice he had in the late 80's/early 90's but he's still way better than most modern film composers. The trend now in scores (thanks to media ventures/remote control) is to go loud and idiotically simple while Elfman's music is actually very complex for someone with his lack of training and it's very much in the style of classic film scoring.
I remember this was released during the peak "elfman mania" in the mid 2000s, it's like everyone suddenly realized how many amazing themes and scores he had written. It was a time when we could allow ourselves to truly escape into Danny Elfman's musical world.
Great writing from Mr Elfman. His film music is beyond question, but here he sets himself at a new level. I know he wrote a Violin Concerto last year but can't find a recording of it anywhere. More of this style please Danny.
This is the tune that plays during the Manta Ray scene, on IMAX’s short documentary “Deep Sea.” Such a beautiful song to go with such graceful creatures, before picking up speed and action when the scene transitions to the Humboldt squid feeding frenzy. Great song for a great scene, and for a great documentary as well!
It's crazy reading the comments and hearing a bunch of people talking about their band using it. I though it was a pretty small niche song that nobody has played but apparently it's very common to the point where another band at grand nats played it as well (even though it was more of the beginning while we played the middle, so not many people directly recognized it)
We're using this, Blue Strings, and Such for our Marching Show, Hypnotica. We also use Urban Dances movements I, II & lll Its AMAZING :) Specially with the Battery/Drumline added in.
TJMC (Thomas Jefferson Marching Colonials) is using a portion of this song in their marching band performance, Twisted. I'm going to play trombone in the performance. Also, this song is really cool!
I have seriously loved Danny since I was a little girl...;o) Many, many moons ago. (over 30 years now) This is so beautiful. He is truly a genius. Too bad he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
this was part one in marching band. you should listen to it. it’s called “At The Waters Edge” by the Band Of Warriors. we made it to pre lims with this song
He uses a lot of dischordant melodies in this. i can't help but wonder if Danny Elfman has Schizophrenia, himself. He does make a lot of references to hallucinations in Oingo Boingo's songs. it must be hard for him. Musically, he's pure genius.
I don’t think so. His brain scans appear normal (yes he posted his brain scans on Instagram); schizophrenics tend to have huge vacuoles in their brains. Maybe he has the gene for it but it remains dormant because he wasn’t abused as a child.
@lidlurch Oh how I miss it so much:/ . This year were doing some music inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's poem "The Raven." I am super excited I am the dance soloist. Lenore:DDD

Hanz Zimmer/Media Ventures/Remote Control have been the ruination of film music.
@@dreamlandnightmare it's not their fault, it's the fault of Studio executives forcing composers to follow trends.
As a band geek and a schizophrenic, I approve.
I've read "From Bad to cursed" years ago but never thought to look up this song. Glad I read it again and decided to do it.
Sameee omg

He's still got it. Why can't his modern scores sound as good as this?
