@ Yup, this is the same command economy we have on ebay, Amazon, etc....Not only is there no free market online, there is no discussion about it at all, anywhere....How is that possible? Why can't I get Musk or anyone to acknowledge it? If I made a video about it, I think it'd be buried.

Is "deep and well formed introspection" looking deadpan into a camera and not even raising the question "Hmm, that was a bad play. I should probably do it better next time."?
It was intentionally, or unintentionally, black comedy in that regard. "I did the dumb". Stares. "I will do it again."

World needs many more people as humble intelligent perceptive and fair as this individual; would like to encourage that (and reward him since I just like him) by pushing so much money at him he will never feel a financial insecurity again. Would also like him to know he’s a handsome smart likable dude. Wish I were some sort of god-like super-person where I could just decide that and suddenly his life would be perfect. Unfortunately I am financially at best average, and have zero superpowers at my disposal. What I can do is provide what I can spare to encourage the type of content and people I’d like to see more of, and emphasize that I really do believe this guy is deserving and capable of a very special and important kind of “greatness.” So sending good vibes, encouragement and support from a ‘friend’ of sorts who is grateful to have met a high-quality person while making the go of it through the trenches. Here’s hoping one day we find our good things, think this individual can and will.

Great video! You are very correct about consulting.
Software engineer here. So I have not worked at big tech, but at a number of small companies, also have one failed consulting business behind me. One of my best friends runs one with 5 employed engineers and I have worked for one, though.
In my opinion, consulting is terribly hard, very unethical if you want to have high profitability (because its basically a race between overcharging your clients vs undercharging your employees). Then, its a balance between not having enough people and not having enough projects.
And finally, after years of work, you have nothing besides reputation. You cant really sell it for much, you just have your salary you have paid yourself.
Its not worth it in the slightest.
The real road to "making it" are product companies - either starting one or being part of one in the early stages. Sure, you may fail, but you still had your salary. And should you succeed, you are in with a lot of stock options.

People don’t understand why I don’t chase after leads like a car salesman - it’s not worth it! I don’t even have a portfolio and people pass my name around, I don’t make a lot of money as a 37 year old either but it pays better than job hunting and working retail.

Side note: I'm an accountant (also studied at waterloo) and I also tried to drink the networking koolaid. The thing is, not everyone is capable of networking. Those hours spent networking were so painful and amounted to absolutely nothing. Eventually I was able to land a public accounting job but I was lucky as I had help from a family friend. I spent a few years there which were not enjoyable but I learned a bit and got my CPA before starting a job in software related to accounting which I am fortunate to say pays well and is quite enjoyable.

But thats the point everyone is making, you need good social skills as an entrepreneur or at least someone who can market / manage people for you. Even in corpo life social skills are needed if your skills are not essential enough so you can rise in the company or get more money. A tech 9-5 is safe because your just doing your job and the networking/marketing is done by the entrepreneurs or whoever is hired for that. If you cant market yourself how will anybody know you exist or what you can do? Spoken from someone who also has bad social skills but knows most people are not robots.

For sure... a huge part of coming to terms with my own neurodivergence was realizing I couldn't adopt neurotypical life ambitions without also accounting for the added personal costs of having to develop those skills that were natural to others. Not to mention the actual daily mental effort to pull off the performative aspect of those skills!
That's a tax my peers won't have to pay and it's unfair to myself to hold myself to a foreign standard.

People were really generous, but I also think it was rather courageous to put yourself out there like that. I think it's great that you discuss the comments you received. Even well meant, thought-out and popular comments might miss their mark. It's a flaw of us humans, to desire simple explanations to complicated problems. As I see it, unless you are wealthy and/or very lucky, society has pretty much decided that people's only road to success is through a job. A job takes away a big chunk of your freedom, and most of the profits of that labor goes to someone else. Really, it's a modern form of slavery. Unfortunately, this reality isn't very satisfying to a lot of people. Going "rogue" usually leads to hardships that you can only fully comprehend if you've experienced it. You're definitely not alone in it, Robert. I'm frustrated too.

I'm following this conversation with interest, as I successfully did one man consulting for three years, but eventually gave up due to stress and joined the 9-5 world. The independent consultants I've met who are successful either 1) Do basic stuff for smaller businesses with no technical staff 2) Provide high level advice on a really hot topic or product, maybe they also sell that product. 3) Provide high level reports and advice to a network of 9-5 execs who trust them exclusively. In my experience most companies trying to do something complicated either 1) Know why they need it and pay for the staff 2) Have no idea and waste a lot of time talking about it (bonus opportunity for high level consulting here).

Many people can't tell apart a clever thought from a silly one, and you end up with a lot of UA-cam comments that are very one sided for example, and if such commenters would be given more time, maybe all they could do with it was make their comments longer. I probably commented this before, but i just wanted to mention that majority of tech startups are just ways to leech venture capital and/or government funds by throwing around fancy words like AI. Drawing out the process for as long as possible and show as little progress as necessary to keep getting funding. And while you do this, the board members can leech as much money as possible until the project goes bust, disappear off into the sunset for couple of years and then come back and do the same thing with "the next big thing".

I still don't get your reservations against a regular 9-to-5. It seems like you have created a strawman of corporate jobs, and put entrepreneurship on a pedestal.
You say that you knew people who had entrepreneurial ambitions, and they joined a 9-to-5 and then disappeared from social media. How is this a bad thing necessarily? Have you considered that they might have found all the things you are searching for: meaning, community, etc. and just don't need to bother with social media anymore? Also, couldn't they have realized that not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur?
Personally speaking, I know a lot of people who had entrepreneurial ambitions in college, but, while doing a "9-to-5" job at tech companies, they realized that they were primarily interested in, and good at, the software side of a startup, and not the sales, marketing, management, etc. etc. of it. So, they found a good fit for their skill set at some company, striking a balance between career and personal goals.
Also, as someone who is very bad at social skills, I feel like you do get to improve these skills working 9-to-5s interacting with management, stakeholders, etc.

11:00 if you work for somebody else, they're making money from your work. If you work for yourself, you are the biggest earner in your organization (or atleast that is the goal). Most people who start their own businesses from scratch fail. But i believe if you never give up, keep an open mind and study how others do things, even if you fail a few times, you (or anyone) will eventually succeed.
